This paper presents the failure model for bioactive degradable composite due to degradation in saline solution using static structural. The composite material is chosen as the material for analysis. Composite has specified into polylactide acid (PLA) that have pointed to two different kinds of temperatures of 140° C and 150° C. Then, each one of the materials given different percentage UTS where it is divided into three classes with 2 %, 50%, and 75%. Each class is imposed six forces 500N, 600N, 700N, 800N, 900N, and 1000N. The objective is to determine the durability of the materials and how long it can be used. Furthermore, the purpose of this project is to analyses the factor of safety of using Static Structural. Therefore, all data and information related to this project have been sought and recorded in the literature review. Simulation and analysis applied in this project are using ANSYS software. SolidWorks software is used as a CAD software to construct three-dimensional models for the design of the specimen. Static Structural used to simulate the structure of the material changes when a load is applied. Static Structural analysis has been carried out on both types of material and results are calculated based on three parameters such as the life cycles, damage, the factor of safety and buckling. Another goal of this project is to design a model for composite failure analysis. Referring to the results obtained from the analysis, the best composite materials selected to make some comparisons with regard to the material safety factor. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. One of the applications of data-driven methods in the industry is the creation of real-time, embedded measurements, whether to monitor or replace sensor signals. As the number of embedded systems in products raises over time, the energy efficiency of such systems must be considered in the design. The time (processor) efficiency of the embedded software is directly related to the energy efficiency of the embedded system. Therefore, when considering some embedded software solutions, such as data-driven methods, time efficiency must be taken into account to improve energy efficiency. In this work, the energy efficiency of three data-driven methods: the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Random-Vector Functional Link (RVFL) network were assessed by using the creation of a real-time in-cylinder pressure sensor for diesel engines as a task. The three methods were kept with equivalent performances, whereas their relative execution time was tested and classified by their statistical rankings. Additionally, the space (memory) efficiency of the methods was assessed. The contribution of this work is to provide a guide to choose the best data-driven method to be used in an embedded system in terms of efficiency.

The present work is focused on the study of indoor thermal comfort control problem in buildings equipped with heating systems. The occupants' thermal comfort sensation is addressed here by a comfort index known as PMV (Predict Mean Vote). In this context, two control algorithms are proposed by using only-one-actuator system associated to the heating system. The methods are based on the model predictive control scheme and on the improvement of the PMV index together with energy minimization. Simulation results - obtained by using the weather data file for the city of Curitiba, Brazil - for two case studies: i ) variations between low and moderate occupants metabolic rates and ii) variations between moderate and high occupants metabolic rates are presented to validate the proposed methodology in terms of room air temperature, relative humidity and PMV control. Implicit schemes require important sub-iterations when dealing with highly nonlinear problems such as the combined heat and moisture transfer through porous building elements. The computational cost rises significantly when the whole-building is simulated, especially when there is important coupling among the building elements themselves with neighbouring zones and with HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) systems. On the other hand, the classical Euler explicit scheme is generally not used because its stability condition imposes very fine time discretisation. Hence, this paper explores the use of an improved explicit approach—the DuFort–Frankel scheme—to overcome the disadvantage of the classical explicit one and to bring benefits that cannot be obtained by implicit methods. The DuFort–Frankel approach is first compared to the classical Euler implicit and explicit schemes to compute the solution of nonlinear heat and moisture transfer through porous materials. Then, the analysis of the DuFort–Frankel unconditionally stable explicit scheme is extended to the coupled heat and moisture balances on the scale of a one- and a two-zone building models. The DuFort–Frankel scheme has the benefits of being unconditionally stable, second-order accurate in time O(Δt2) and to compute explicitly the solution at each time step, avoiding costly sub-iterations. This approach may reduce the computational cost by twenty as wel as it may enable perfect synchronism for whole-building simulation and co-simulation.

Among the existing meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, a well-known branch is the differential evolution (DE). DE is a powerful population-based algorithm of evolutionary computation field designed for solving global optimization problems which only has a few control parameters. With an eye to improve the performance of DE, in this paper, a DE approach combined with a cultural algorithm technique based on normative knowledge (NDE) is investigated to estimate the heat transfer coefficient during freezing treatment by inverse analysis. Numerical results for inverse heat transfer problem demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the NDE algorithm. In this application, NDE approach outperforms a classical DE approach in terms of quality of solution. © 2011 IEEE.

Fabrication of 2000 series aluminum lap joint sheets by magnetic pulse welding and their interfacial microstructure observations

Lap joint sheets of 2017-T3/2017-T3 and 2024-T3/2024-T3 were fabricated by magnetic pulse welding (MPW). Tensile shear tests were performed on the welded sheet, and a good lap joint was achieved at a discharge energy more than 3.0 kJ for both lap joint sheets. Weld interface showed wavy morphology when the bonding at an adequate amount of discharge energy. Weld width of the lap joint sheets tend to increase with increasing of discharge energy. Collision speed calculated from collision time was 211 m/s and estimated 1.5 GPa of the collision pressure at discharge energy of 3.5 kJ. SEM and EDS results showed that the weld interface exhibited no significant contrast of intermediate layer and oxides. A Metal jet was observed as aggregates of fine particles with size of less than 100 nm at the outside of bonded area. From TEM observation at the bonding interface, Al phases between flyer and parent sheets had direct contact without the intervention of the oxide, and localized melting was not recognized. From these obtained results, good lap joint is attributed to true-contact of Al phases, an increasing of weld width, the anchor effect, and work hardening at weld interface. © 2017 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is a member of the wide category of swarm intelligence methods for solving global optimization problems. Its basic idea is the simulation of simplified animal social behaviors such as fish schooling and bird flocking. PSO algorithms are attracting attentions in recent years, due to their ability of keeping good balance between convergence and diversity maintenance. Several attempts have been made to improve the performance of the original PSO algorithm. In this paper, a modified version of the original PSO based on Cauchy distribution and dynamic adaptation of inertia factor, named modified PSO (MPSO), is proposed. to estimate the unknown variables of an inverse heat transfer problem. To validate the optimization performance of the proposed MPSO, an inverse heat transfer problem is illustrated and the algorithm has to estimate its unknown variables. The results testify that the MPSO can perform well in an inverse heat transfer problem. ©2010 IEEE.

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to present a novel approach for gait assessment called gait proficiency index (GPI) using only ground reaction forces (GRF)-derived parameters. Material and methods: Barefoot gait from 51 healthy children was evaluated with the GPI in this study. The participants walked at their self-selected speed along a 6-m walkway with 8 force platforms placed in pairs. The force-time analysis resulted in a dynamic symmetry assessment (DSA) that is the result of vertical GRF component distribution for all gait cycles both the left and right foot. DSA and impulse calculation from GRF led to the calculation of the GPI, which is the relationship between the impulse of load response and mid-stance and impulse of terminal stance and pre-swing of both right and left feet multiplied by the DSA index. The children were divided into three groups with 17 participants each and classified according to age (mean age ± standard deviation): G1 (4.39 ± 0.511), G2 (6.33 ± 0.639), G3 (8.49 ± 0.636). Results: The results show that as children mature, the GPI seems to increase from G1 to G2 and decreases from G2 to G3 and that both the standard deviations and coefficient of variation decrease with the increase of age. Conclusions: This can be an indicative that the index can assess improvements in gait quality through age. However, there was no statistical significance between the groups in this variable. Also, the correlation between either DSA and age or GPI and age found is weak to make other conclusions but that the study of adults should be included to either validate or refute the use of GPI. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

We present the theory, design, and initial characterization of a tumor-derived exosome detection platform based on resistive-pulse sensing to enable cost-effective, point-of-care cancer screening. Our platform detects exosomes displaying a specific surface antigen by electronically measuring the effective size increase that occurs when exosomes bind to colloids functionalized with a specific antibody. We have demonstrated that our device can distinguish antibody-functionalized colloids from similar colloids incubated with SKBR3-derived exosomes. © 17CBMS-0001.

The reliability-redundancy allocation problem can be approached as a mixed-integer programming problem. It has been solved by using optimization techniques such as dynamic programming, integer programming, and mixed-integer nonlinear programming. On the other hand, a broad class of meta-heuristics has been developed for reliability-redundancy optimization. Recently, a new meta-heuristics called firefly algorithm (FA) algorithm has emerged. The FA is a stochastic metaheuristic approach based on the idealized behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. In FA, the flashing light can be formulated in such a way that it is associated with the objective function to be optimized, which makes it possible to formulate the firefly algorithm. This paper introduces a modified FA approach combined with chaotic sequences (FAC) applied to reliability-redundancy optimization. In this context, an example of mixed integer programming in reliability-redundancy design of an overspeed protection system for a gas turbine is evaluated. In this application domain, FAC was found to outperform the previously best-known solutions available. © 2011 IEEE.
