The reliability-redundancy allocation problem can be approached as a mixed-integer programming problem. It has been solved by using optimization techniques such as dynamic programming, integer programming, and mixed-integer nonlinear programming. On the other hand, a broad class of meta-heuristics has been developed for reliability-redundancy optimization. Recently, a new meta-heuristics called harmony search (HS) algorithm has emerged. HS was conceptualized using an analogy with music improvisation process where music players improvise the pitches of their instruments to obtain better harmony. This paper introduces a modified HS approach combined with an operator of differential evolution - a paradigm of evolutionary computation - to solve optimization problems in reliability engineering. In this context, an example of mixed integer programming in reliability-redundancy design of an over-speed protection system for a gas turbine is evaluated. In this application domain, HS was found to outperform the previously best-known solutions available. ©2009 IEEE.

Welding characteristics and effect of gap length on 2000 series aluminum alloy sheet lap joints welded by magnetic pulse welding

Effect of gap length on welding characteristics of 2000 series aluminum alloy sheets in magnetic pulse welding (MPW) was investigated. Collision time for the 2017-T3 sheet welded at gap length of 1.2 mm and 4.6 mm were 6.16 μs and 16.9 μs respectively, which were increased with increasing of gap length. The collision speed calculated from collision times increased as the gap length increased, showed a maximum value of 380 m/s with a gap length of 2.0 mm, and then the speed declined. This result indicates that it is possible to join sheets at a higher collision speed even with the same discharge energy by adjusting an appropriate gap length. Strong lap joint was achieved for the 2024-T3/2024-T6 and the 2024-T3/7075-T6 lap joint sheets by welding condition of gap length more than 1.0 mm. Thus, it could be possible to improve the weld strength by widening the gap length and performing MPW at high collision speed. SEM and HAADF-STEM observations showed no clear oxide films formed on the weld interface. From microstructure observation, it was considered that lap joints fabricated by MPW were welded at solid state. © 2017 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Node-pore sensing (NPS) is a versatile label-free microfluidic platform to measure a variety of cell phenotypes. Yet the single-channel nature of NPS limits throughput and precludes integration with components such as cell sorting. Here we demonstrate a novel multichannel NPS design by encoding the channels with Barker and Gold codes to modulate the current pulse. Particle events are detected through matched-filter detection and successive interference cancellation (SIC), resolving overlapping signals in the same channel and across separate channels. © 2020 CBMS-0001

Crack often affects structural deformation nonlinearly, leading to difficulty detecting their existence using some Structural Health Monitoring methods. In this paper, we propose a damage index derived from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Furthermore, we evaluate the method's ability to detect the crack when the specimen is subjected to an impact load. To assess the proposed damage index, we consider a beam specimen containing a lateral crack. The beam has a length of 300 mm and a square-shaped cross-sectional area of 20 mm × 20 mm. The beam is made of steel, is constrained at one end, and is subjected to an impact load at the other end. The beam lateral displacement at many observation points across the beam-free surface is recorded during the beam dynamics. The records are used to compute the proposed damage index. The results suggest that the index only detects the crack when the beam deformation is affected by the crack. When the crack face is suppressed to bear the compressive stress, the resulting deformation is not much different from that of the uncracked beam. In that condition, the proposed index is not able to indicate the existing crack. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Numerical simulation of fire in a gasoline storage tank in reduced-scale

With the increasing demand for energy and fuels in Brazil, the storage of liquid fuels in multiple tanks is becoming much more usual, posing challenges from the point of view of fire safety. To study this type of phenomenon and to evaluate its possible causes, detecting failures such as ones in design and erection of storage systems or in detection and protection equipment, numerical simulations are performed based on real data. This work presents numerical simulations of a small-scale tank for gasoline storage, based on an experimental study reported in literature. The present research shows results related to temperature in the region adjacent to the tank on fire, fuel mass burning rate, heat release rate and average flame height. Comparisons are made between numerical and experimental results, as well as with available literature results for similar conditions. In addition to gasoline type C (which has anhydrous ethanol in its composition), also gasoline type A (anhydrous ethanol free) is considered. The results obtained for simulations with gasoline type A presented better agreement with literature data than those for gasoline type C, the differences being due to the variable composition of the type C fuel. For example, the reported fuel mass burning rate for gasoline in literature is 0.045 kg/(m2·s), while the present simulations provided values of 0.038 kg/(m2·s) for type C and 0.047 kg/(m2·s) for type A. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications.

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Nature-inspired algorithms of the swarm intelligence field perform powerfully and efficiently in solving global optimization problems. Inspired by nature, these metaheuristic algorithms have obtained promising performance over continuous domains of optimization problems. Recently, a new swarm intelligence approach called firefly algorithm (FA) has emerged. The FA is a stochastic paradigm based on the idealized behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. However, to achieve good performance with FA, the tuning of control parameters is essential as its performance is sensitive to the choice of the randomization parameter (α) setting. This paper introduces a FA approach combined with chaotic sequences generated by Zaslavskii map (FACZ) to tune the randomization parameter. Simulations of Loney's solenoid benchmark problem examine the effectiveness of the conventional FA and the proposed FACZ algorithms. Simulation results and comparisons with the FACZ demonstrated that the performance of the FA is promising in the Loney's solenoid case.

y associating active learning methodologies and digital media as a form to improve educational quality, the diversity of experimentations in engineering education has been motivating researches in many areas with possibilities of increasing both students' knowledge and skills. Control engineering is an area where educational laboratories are usually costly, thus the use of virtual laboratories for remote experimentation became an interesting approach. In this work, it is presented a remote experimentation procedure for the ball and beam system, which is a nonlinear and unstable open loop process. Considering the advanced control topic, multiobjective optimization was introduced in the experiment in order to tune Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. Through the description of the system model, the multiobjective optimization technique, and the experiment configuration, students can simulate and test their controllers remotely in a real plant. © 2019 IEEE.

Artificial neural network (ANN) which has four or more layers structure is called deep NN (DNN) and it is recognized as one of promising machine learning techniques. Convolutional neural network (CNN) is widely used and powerful structure for image recognition and/or defect inspection. It is also known that support vector machine (SVM) has a superior ability for binary classification in spite of only having two layers. The authors already have developed a CNN SVM design and training tool for defect detection of resin molded articles, while the effectiveness and the validity have been proved through several CNNs design, training and evaluation. The tool further enables to facilitate the design of a CNN model based on transfer learning concept. In this paper, a pick and place robot is introduced while implementing a visual feedback control and a transfer learning-based CNN. The visual feedback control enables to omit the complicated calibration between image and robot coordinate systems, also the transfer learning-based CNN allows the robot to estimate the orientation of target objects for dexterous picking operation. The usefulness and validity of the system is confirmed through pick and place experiments using a small articulated robot named DOBOT. © 2020 IEEE.
