This article delves into the significance of urban digital twins in generating synthetic data specifically tailored for individuals with disabilities. It explores how this data can be effectively utilized to construct artificial intelligence (AI) models that promote inclusivity and enhance accessibility in urban environments. The article thoroughly examines the challenges and opportunities associated with acquiring data on individuals with disabilities, taking into account the ethical and practical implications of generating and utilizing synthetic data for the development of accessible and inclusive technologies. Using the city of Curitiba, Brazil as a case study, which has undergone scanning, digitization, and transformation into an urban digital twin, avatars have been strategically placed to enable the detection of individuals with disabilities within diverse scenarios and perspectives in urban environments. Consequently, this approach provides a diverse and realistic representation of the situations in which individuals with disabilities may find themselves in urban settings, contributing to advancements in urban planning and technology by emphasizing the importance of digital twins in generating synthetic data to promote inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with disabilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Wearable sensors have drawn vast interest for their convenience to be worn on body to monitor and track body movements or exercise activities in real ***,wearable electronics rely on powering systems to ***,a self-powered,porous,flexible,hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous membrane based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)nanofiber has been developed as a tactile sensor with low-cost and simple fabrication for human body motion detection and ***,effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(CNT)and barium titanate(BTO)as additives to the fiber morphology as well as mechanical and dielectric properties of the piezoelectric nanofiber membrane were *** fabricated BTO@PVDF piezoelectric nanogenerator(PENG)exhibits the highβ-phase content and best overall electrical performances,thus selected for the flexible sensing device ***,the nanofibrous membrane demonstrated robust tactile sensing performance that the device exhibits durability over 12,000 loading test cycles,holds a fast response time of 82.7 ms,responds to a wide pressure range of 0-5 bar and shows a high relative sensitivity,especially in the small force range of 11.6 V/bar upon pressure applied perpendicular to the ***,when attached on human body,its unique fibrous and flexible structure offers the tactile sensor to present as a health care monitor in a self-powered manner by translating motions of different movements to electrical signals with various patterns or sequences.

In the event of loss of roadbed on an electric railway line due to typhoon or heavy rain damage caused by abnormal weather, or damage to a subway pole due to an unexpected train derailment, installation of catenary poles for emergency recovery is necessary to restore the electric railways. Conventional emergency catenary poles are made of steel, so they are very heavy, and the length per unit is large, making transportation and installation inconvenient. Also, there is a risk of industrial accidents due to workers' musculoskeletal disorders. In this study, we developed an emergency recovery catenary pole using aluminum, a lightweight material, and researched and developed a slimmer rail fastening device that can also be applied to concrete ballast. The developed product underwent factory testing and reference testing, was assembled and installed on a field test, and then a safety test was performed. The product developed is expected to minimize disruption to train operations and prevent industrial accidents for related workers by safety and quickly restoring electric railways. When using an electric scooter, there is a problem with the electric motor overheating. Temperatures that are too high will damage motor performance and reduce reliability. As a result, heat transfer from electric motors needs to be carefully considered. This study aims to determine the thermal characteristics of an electric motor by varying the rotational speed. The rotational speeds varied were 250 rpm, 500 rpm, and 750 rpm. Using finite element analysis to answer research questions, the software used is Ansys Motor-CAD. The type of electric motor used is a wheel hub motor with a power of 1.5 kW. The findings indicate that the rotating speed influenced the thermal properties of a wheel hub motor. Wheel hub motor components, including the winding, stator, rotor, cover, and axle, exhibit a drop in temperature with increasing rotational speed. The winding is the component that experiences the highest temperature, and the cover is the component that experiences the lowest temperature. The winding loss value is much higher than the stator, magnet, and rotor loss. Compared to other rotational speeds, the winding temperature at 750 rpm rotational speed achieved a stable temperature the quickest, at 519 minutes, while the temperatures at 250 rpm and 500 rpm reached stable temperatures, respectively, at 592.2 and 550.5 minutes. © 2023 IEEE.

The increasing public demand for electric vehicles also impacts the demand for electric motors. The prominent problem electric motors faces are excess heat when operating because it affects the age and performance of the electric motor. Installing fins on the electric motor housing is one way to reduce heat on the electric motor. In this study, a comparison of the six-fin design was carried out, and the effect on the thermal characteristics of the electric motor was examined. Fins are mounted radially and axially. The six types of fin designs studied are radial fins-round, radial fins-square, radial fins-servo, axial fins-round, axial fins-square, and axial fins-servo. The research uses the lumped circuit models method, and the software used is Motor-CAD. The type of electric motor being studied is a brushless permanent magnet machine (BPM) with an internal rotor. The study's findings indicate that the fin's performance in cooling the electric motor depends on its area. The lower temperatures in the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to other fin designs are due to the broader area of the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to the others. Axially mounted fins provide better cooling than radially mounted fins. For example, the winding temperature on the axial fins-servo is 140.54°C, and the winding temperature on the radial fins-square is 140.86°C even though the area of the axial fins-servo is 22.7% smaller than the area of the radial fins-servo. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of multiobjective optimization procedures for control tuning has been constantly explored, presenting satisfactory results, and generating significant contributions to control engineering. In this way, the field of robust control can benefit significantly from the integration of multiobjective optimization design procedures for robust Proportional-Integral-Derivative (RPID) controller synthesis, enabling innovative solutions to complex control challenges. Due to this fact, this paper explores an approach to utilize multiobjective optimization algorithms in a simplified procedure, considering uncertain systems in the form of interval plants with uncertain poles, the Kharitonov theorem is used to obtain a region of stability as search space for the multiobjective algorithm, being the optimization process performed over a nominal system model. Two numerical cases and a flexible actuator model were used to demonstrate the procedure for RPI synthesis, resulting in robustly stable controllers with optimized performance over error and control signal effort measures.

Advances in information and communication technologies have significantly transformed engineering education. Virtual laboratories are increasingly adopted to enhance student interaction with control system simulations. The improved visualization and interaction capabilities of modern computers offer a more organic way to teach theoretical foundations. This paper describes the implementation of a methodology for teaching control theory that until now was entirely online in a face-to-face environment at the University of the Federal District in Brasilia, Brazil. This methodology utilizes virtual laboratories with CoppeliaSim, MATLAB, and the EVA mobile robot to teach control theory focused on single-input, single-output (SISO) systems for mobile robot tracking and obstacle avoidance applications. The results of the face-to-face implementation are compared to those of the fully online methodology, revealing that in-person teaching significantly enhances the quality of instruction. ©2024 IEEE.

This study develops warranty cost models for a warranted product under the lemon laws protection. The product considered in this study is a multi-component system consisting of critical and non-critical components. The Failure of either component can cause the product to fail. The product is declared a lemon if recurrent failures of the critical component occur—i.e., the number of the failures reaches the threshold value, k (e.g., four failures). Furthermore, this study assumes that a failure of the critical component can occur naturally or induced by a failure of the non-critical component. Hence, two types of failures are considered—i.e., a natural failure and an induced failure. Whenever a lemon is declared, the customers can opt for either (i) a refund or (ii) a replacement warranty claim. Hence, this paper provides the warranty cost models for the two cases—(i) refund and (ii) replacement then encounters the optimal lemon law period that minimizes the expected warranty cost rate. The numerical examples are provided to illustrate the expected warranty cost and the optimal lemon law period. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2023.

The dilemma zone refers to the area where a vehicle approaching an intersection as the light turns yellow must decide whether to stop or not. Often, the vehicle’s speed is too fast for it to stop at the stop line before the light turns red, but the vehicle cannot completely clear the intersection before the three-second yellow signal ends. This can lead to a major accident as the departing vehicle has not cleared the intersection before the opposite light changes to a green signal and cars on the other side of the intersection start to move. To prepare for this situation, traffic light patterns were modified using pre-trained data sets, then the traffic patterns at these lights were recorded using cameras. Autonomous vehicles were introduced into these areas and their speed was controlled based on the recognized traffic light patterns. This paper explores whether deep learning algorithms can effectively control vehicle speed when autonomous vehicles face the dilemma zone. © ICROS 2022.
