Real-time Path Planning Algorithm based on Ridge Detection for Solid-State LiDAR-based Autonomous Agricultural Robot

Autonomous robots driving in agricultural environments need to create accurate routes to prevent damaging farmland. Herein, a real-time path planning algorithm based on ridge detection using the Livox Mid70 LiDAR is proposed. The field has a steep slope between the furrow and the ridge, and we find data corresponding to this slope from the lidar data. Using two Mid70 LiDARs, we collect the left and right slope data and linearly fit the slope data using the RANSAC algorithm. Finally, the driving route is obtained from the average of the two straight lines. To verify the algorithm, the steering angle needed to follow the driving path was calculated, and an autonomous driving test was conducted in the actual field environment: it was observed that the robot drove stably. Additional tests will be conducted in more rugged terrain. © ICROS 2022.

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Desiccant-coated heat exchangers (DCHEs) enable energy-efficient dehumidification, alleviating the overall heat load on vapor compression refrigeration systems. However, conventional desiccants have limited water uptake capacities and high regeneration temperature requirements. This work presents ternary composite desiccants comprising the metal-organic framework, MIL-101(Cr) (where MIL denotes Materials Institute Lavoisier), the superabsorbent polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and hygroscopic salts for enhanced moisture sorption. Gravimetric water sorption analyses revealed that desiccants containing lithium chloride (LiCl) attained water uptakes greater than their calcium chloride- and copper (II) sulfate-containing counterparts. Subsequent cyclic tests identified the optimal MIL-101(Cr)/PVA/LiCl composite that adsorbed and desorbed moisture readily. From its water sorption isotherm, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1 LiCl desiccant has a water uptake capacity of 2.49g {water} g desiccant-1 - nearly double that of MIL-101(Cr) and more than nine times that of silica gel. When coated onto a prototype heat exchanger, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1 LiCl composite demonstrated a gravimetric water uptake more than double that of the silica gel-coated control across three adsorption-desorption cycles. Moreover, low-grade waste heat of 50°C could partially regenerate these DCHEs, leaving behind residual moisture of less than 0.5g{water} gdesiccant-1. Consequently, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1LiCl-coated heat exchangers are effective dehumidifiers for addressing the latent heat load towards energy savings in cooling systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Climate change has received a lot of attention due to high emissions in the energy sector from coal-dependent generators, but the solution that can be done to overcome this is the co-firing method through CFD simulation with a discrete phase model (DPM) carried out by adding EFB biomass in a ratio 5% and 95% LRC coal are injected into the boiler combustion furnace. The research was carried out on a PC boiler with a generation capacity of 315Mwe. The research results show that the addition of EFB biomass to coal combustion causes changes in the calorific value which has an impact on the high temperature of the combustion process. However, it has a good impact from the operational side of burning coal particles. © 2023 IEEE.

The 2011 flood in Thailand exposed significant vulnerabilities in industrial areas, highlighting the necessity for enhanced disaster risk management through Area-Business Continuity Management (Area-BCM). This preliminary study focuses on identifying how stakeholders rely on information from each other to improve disaster preparedness and response. The research involves systematically identifying Area-BCM stakeholders and designing interview questions, which are evaluated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) to ensure relevance and clarity. All interview questions surpassed the IOC threshold of 0.5, confirming their effectiveness in capturing information interdependencies. Expert feedback led to refinements in the questions, underscoring the importance of tailored data collection. This initial plan provides a critical foundation for understanding information interdependence and highlights the importance of well-designed data collection methods. The findings have significant implications for developing more resilient disaster management strategies in industrial areas, emphasizing the need for precise and relevant stakeholder communication to enhance Area-BCM effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

Forest fires have a significant impact on ecosystems and human life, especially in northern Thailand, where Chiang Mai is severely affected. Traditional methods for detecting forest fires have limitations, so there is a need for advanced simulation models. This research uses Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) to develop a forest fire simulation for Chiang Mai. The methodology involves collecting historical data, performing Multiple Regression Analysis, designing the simulation, and testing it. Data from 1998 to 2021, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed/direction, burn area, and slope, were collected from various sources. Multiple regression analysis identified wind speed as the most significant factor affecting burn area. The forest fire simulation, designed using ZF Wang's spread model and tested with AnyLogic, showed that wind direction and speed are crucial in fire spread. The simulation accurately predicted high-risk areas, helping in proactive planning and response. This study confirms that wind is a critical factor in forest fire spread, providing a valuable tool for fire districts to improve preparedness and management. Future research should focus on refining the model with localized data and integrating real-time detection to improve its accuracy and applicability. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a pose synchronization method for semi-autonomous dynamic robotic swarms with a passivityshort human operator. In the human-robot network, a human operator sends a command signal to and receives visual information from only a part of the robotic group. In this setting, the proposed dynamic control scheme achieves not only pose synchronization of all mobile robots but also convergence to the reference pose that the human operator specifies. The main advantage of the proposed method is to guarantee convergence of not only the position but also the orientation to the reference ones in the human-robot network. Finally, we provide human-in-the-loop simulation results through the human operation using a tablet PC to illustrate the performance of the proposed control method. © 2023 IEEE.

Many fitness trackers monitor physical activity by presenting data such as heart rate and step count in numerical or graphical formats. However, these methods often fail to connect the data with users’ subjective bodily sensations, making it challenging for users to perceive the information as personally relevant. To address this issue, this study proposes a reflective system that integrates embodied interaction with voice narrative feedback. The system utilizes the body as a reference frame for fitness data and presents health information in a story-like format. Results from user studies indicate that the proposed system significantly improves engagement (aesthetic appeal, reward factors) and reduces cognitive load (satisfaction, frustration), showing moderate to large effect sizes. It also strengthens the connection between users and their data. This approach demonstrates the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional fitness trackers, offering a novel and immersive reflective experience in the healthcare and fitness domains. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Stroke is the second cause of death and the third cause of disability in the world. Stroke is a disease caused by a clot in the artery that supplies blood to the brain (ischemia). Rehabilitation is a solution to restore the function of parts of the body that have been disturbed by a stroke. Therefore, exoskeleton robots for stroke therapy are one solution to provide good rehabilitation. The exoskeleton robot supports healthy human hand movements and considers the safety and comfort factors during rehabilitation. The exoskeleton in this research uses a cable and sheath transmission mechanism with a locally situated motor as a design mechanism that guarantees safety and comfort. The design strength can be determined using ANSYS static structural assistance software so that the maximum stress in links 1, 2, and 3 is known within safe limits with anthropometric loading. Apart from that, the static structural simulation results show that link 1 can withstand a maximum load of 20 N or more in the X-axis loading, a load of 15 N in the Y-axis loading, and a load of 15 N in the Y-axis loading, and a load of 10 N in the Z-axis loading. Link 2 can withstand a maximum load of 10 N in the X-axis load and 20 N or more in the Y-axis load. Meanwhile, link 3 can withstand a maximum load of 20 N in the X-axis load and below 10 N in the Y-axis load. © 2023 IEEE.

The potential for magnesium storage batteries to become the next generation of rechargeable batteries is high. This is largely due to the abundance of magnesium metal resources and their high safety and electric capacity per volume. Our research team has been studying magnesium alloys as anode materials for these batteries. Specifically, we have been investigating the electrochemical activity and mechanism of adding copper to Mg-9mass%Al and Mg-9mass%Al-3mass%Ca. Our findings indicate that the electrochemical activity increased with the addition of 1mass%Cu, but decreased with the addition of 3mass%Cu. In addition, changes in lattice constant and basal orientation were also observed. These changes decreased with 1mass%Cu and increased with 3mass%Cu. SEM observations showed that the cell delimitation was indistinct for the 1%Cu addition. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.
