Bitcoin is the leading currency in the cryptocurrency market capturing attention worldwide. Forecasting the Bitcoin price as accurate as possible is essential, but due to its high volatility this task is challenging. Many researchers try, through the years, to develop efficient models for predicting the Bitcoin price using several different data-driven approaches. The objective of this paper is to develop a novel decomposition-ensemble learning model that combines Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Stacking-ensemble learning (STACK) with machine learning algorithms to forecast the Bitcoin price multi-step ahead. The algorithms are k-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Regression with Linear kernel, Feed-forward Artificial Neural Network with single-layer perceptron, Generalized Linear Model, and Cubist. Correlation matrix (CORR), principal component analysis (PCA), and Box-Cox transformation (BOXCOX) were used as data preprocessing techniques. Estimating the performance of the proposed models (namely VMD-STACK-CORR, VMD-STACK-PCA, and VMD-STACK-BOXCOX) using relative root mean square error, symmetric mean absolute percentage error, and absolute percentage error measures, defined that for one-day-ahead forecast VMD-STAK-BOXCOX model presented the better performance, and for two and three-days-ahead forecast VMD-STACK-CORR model was chosen, compared to VMD, STACK, and machine learning algorithms models' performance. Diebold-Mariano statistical test was conducted to evaluate a reduction in forecasting errors. Therefore, the proposed models (VMD-STACK-CORR, VMD-STACK-PCA, and VMD-STACK-BOXCOX) indeed forecast accurately Bitcoin price and outperformed the compared models (VMD, STACK, and machine learning models).

The beer industry is one of the businesses affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the exponential growth of the beer industry throughout the years, this aspect of the beverage industry has gained limited attention and has been underexplored. This study aimed to provide a better and up-to-date understanding of Philippine-beer consumers to speed up its recovery. An online survey with 853 volunteer respondents was conducted to investigate Filipinos’ local beer consumption considering frequency, intake, expenses, and preference. A descriptive analysis of the consumers’ self-perceived evaluation of the changes in drinking showed a slight decrease in frequency, intake, and expenses and a minor change in preference. Somers’ d and the chi-squared test results indicated significant relationships between each demographic information (age, sex, and income) and frequency, intake, and expenses. In addition, a conjoint analysis with an orthogonal design indicated that price was the most important attribute (58.025%), followed by primary taste (12.452%), alcohol content (9.706%), mouthfeel (6.445%), aftertaste (6.355%), aroma (5.189%), and, lastly, color (1.827%). The findings of this study could be used as a baseline for improved product offerings, customized advertisements, and market segmentation. Moreover, the results of this study could be applied and extended by breweries to promote and create strategies. Lastly, this study could be extended and utilized by other beverage industries worldwide. © 2022 by the authors.

In this paper we are presenting the statement and evaluation guidelines of a control engineering benchmark, oriented for multi-objective optimisation design techniques. This is done with the aim of promoting new research on this field, by defining a benchmark to have reproducibility and comparability of the three steps involved in the multi-objective process: problem statement, optimisation process and multi-criteria decision making. The proposed benchmark is a single-input single-output process based on the Peltier effect. Rules and guidelines, merged with common practices in control systems engineering, are highlighted and disclosed in the multi-objective open invited track 2020.

In recent years, several applications of micromixers have been reported to have a number of advantages, including the use of small amounts of plasma, short reaction times, and good reaction efficiency. The samples analyzed in this study were blood plasma and distilled water. The process is carried out by passive mixing which is based on a microchannel structure to enhance the diffusion of molecules for efficient mixing. The arrow shape was chosen as the micromixer design because it has a better blending performance than the T and Y shapes. The types of obstacles also used to improve the mixing process. The simulation was carried out on COMSOL Multiphysics software version 5.6. The results showed better mixing results for the micromixer design with triangle right facing obstacles with the highest Reynolds number was 9.4326. Then followed by ellips obstacles with a value of 9.4322, then without obstacles that is 9.4309, after that the triangle left facing with a value of 9.4006, and finally the lowest Reynolds number is a design with a diamond obstacles of 9.2514.

This paper investigates the exact solving of an NP-hard parallel machine scheduling problem where each operation requires the use of a specific type of resource, from a set of resources where each type is available in a single copy. The considered objective is the minimization of the makespan. After a brief literature review on the parallel machine scheduling problems under resource reservation constraints, a constraint programming model is provided. An experimental study is then carried out. The increasing adoption of new automation and information technologies are transforming production systems into cyber-physical systems (CPS). Although consulting companies have developed management frameworks to better characterize the implications of these technologies to how operations are managed, mainly focusing on new business models, efficiency, and effectiveness, the real impacts on decision areas (e.g., quality management) and performance objectives (e.g., flexibility) are still unclear. How are management systems being transformed? Are new managerial approaches emerging that address the particularities of new technologies? What are the critical success factors for conducting this transformation? To address these questions, a more systematic approach needs to be undertaken. This paper contributes to this by presenting a protocol to be used in systematic studies of the implications of the adoption of new technologies to the management of operations, and by illustrating its application to the analysis of the adoption of a cognitive vision system in an automotive manufacturer primarily deployed for improving product quality. The analysis protocol is based on Pettigrew’s dimensions of context, content, and process for change initiatives and is further subdivided into information requirements, variables to be analyzed and its potential sources of data. The case shows that the application of the protocol was able to reveal that besides expected effects on quality and productivity, new forms of interaction among workers and between workers and supervisors emerged that need further investigation. From the results of the case, future applications of the protocol are discussed.

To address current limitations in biomaterials for peripheral nerve repair regarding a lack of physiologically relevant signaling and immune response following implantation, this study evaluated the development and feasibility of a multi-cue biomaterial with physiologically relevant chemical, electrical, and physical signaling. To accomplish this, a bulk-functionalized poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) scaffold was fabricated using blend electrospinning to incorporate decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) to mediate the foreign body response in vivo and promote enhanced wound healing. Decellularized ECM was secreted and assembled by fibroblast cells and incorporated into the electrospinning solution with concentration values ranging from 0% to 0.4% (m/v). Physical, chemical, and electrical properties of the scaffold were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), mechanical tensile testing, and voltage readings for piezoelectricity. Blended scaffolds were evaluated in vitro for analysis of cell-material interactions in the context of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) repair and in vivo for immune response. In vitro work demonstrated increased cell metabolism and elongated, repair-like morphologies in Schwann cells on scaffolds with higher dECM concentrations. Subcutaneous implantation of blended scaffolds in rats at 7 days revealed limited multi-nucleated giant cell formation. Following 28 days in vivo, regenerative characteristics of the proliferative phase of wound healing were present with enhanced nerve growth and vasculature to scaffold. Overall, blend-electrospun scaffolds with native dECM showed promise in mitigating pro-inflammatory responses and promote advanced regenerative behaviors, thereby providing an implantable biomaterial with the necessary physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics desired for c

This works presents an innovative application of Markov Decision Process (MDP) to a medium-term mining logistics planning problem considering the mine-to-client supply chain. We implemented three distinct algorithms based on state-of-the-art approaches to solve large-scale problems, and compared their results. Furthermore, we combined all three variants in a single novel algorithm that attained fast convergence and may be an alternative to circumvent the curse of dimensionality underlying large scale problems.

Towards safety level definition based on the HRN approach for industrial robots in collaborative activities

Since the first industrial revolution, factories seek to increase their profits by improving their performance and reducing costs in their products. With each new industrial revolution, new ideas on how to reduce costs appear. Currently, in industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, advanced robotics emerges as one of the principal pillars and with-it collaborative robotics. Collaborative robotics is the branch of robotics that has the security systems needed to perform joint activities with humans. However, the quantification of safety level varies depending on the location and more granularly from company to company. This work aims to assign levels of safety that allow a robot to perform a collaborative activity. To propose such values, the work was started with a bibliographical review focused on defining the robots that would be approached, reviewing the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) related to machinery safety and defining the term of collaboration. Then, the method of calculation of the safety indicator was evaluated, in the case covered was the Hazard Rating Number (HRN), and then defined the intervals that will be assigned to the robots that will perform collaborative activities. To validate the defined HRN intervals, a survey was developed and distributed for engineers from automation sector of an automotive company trained in safety, in this survey, categories of robots were placed for the engineers to assign HRN values to them. After the survey, the results were grouped and analyzed analytically. As a result, the proposed HRN intervals were validated because they fit the safety-level stipulated required for a robot to perform collaborative activity. Also, it was concluded that a robot can perform a collaborative activities even if it has not been acquired for this purpose, it is enough that it meets the safety requirements proposed in the work.

Control of a Refrigeration System Benchmark Problem: An Approach based on COR Metaheuristic Algorithm and TOPSIS Method

The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is widely used in industrial applications. In order to evaluate the performance of distinct types of controllers, several benchmark systems are available in the specialized literature. In this work, an alternative approach to tune PID controllers based on the Competition Over Resources (COR) metaheuristic optimization algorithm and TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method is proposed to solve a vapor compression refrigeration system problem, which is a benchmark control challenge. The proposed technique considered the normalization of multiple cost functions to simplify the selection of two PIDs’ parameters, reducing the need of understanding the influences of cost functions variations in complex problems. The proposed controllers outperformed the base line controllers, providing a performance index 68.39% better than the original approach. Finally, the proposed method was compared with other tuning methods.
