Polyimide (PI) is one of the most pragmatic polymers for highly durable flexible devices based on its micro- and nanopatterned structures, because of its excellent thermal and chemical stability. The conventional top-down patterning processes, typically involving materials removal and chemical etching, however, are often ineffective to fabricate micro- and nanopatterns on the PI film due to its high mechanical and chemical resistance. In this work, we develop a highly efficient and scalable PI patterning methodology by utilizing the burr- and etch-free direct mechanical deformation driven by continuous dynamic nanoinscribing. We systematically investigate that the micro- and nanopatterns can be cleanly machined on the PI film with tailored periods, depths, and shapes, by controlling several key nanoinscribing process parameters such as temperature and force. Among many potential applications that can benefit from the present study, we demonstrate the facile fabrication of metallic micro- and nanowires, either durably embedded in or etch-freely patterned on the PI surface, toward flexible and highly durable device systems. © 2021, The Authors. In recent decades, inertial microfluidic devices have been widely used for cell separation. However, these techniques inevitably exert mechanical stresses, causing cell damage and death during the separation process. This remains a significant challenge for their biological and clinical applications. Despite extensive research on cell separation, the effects of mechanical stresses on cells in microfluidic separation have remained insufficiently explored. This review focuses on the effects of mechanical stresses on cells, particularly in spiral microchannels and contraction-expansion arrays (Contraction and Expansion Arrays (CEAs)). We derived the approximated magnitude of shear stress in a spiral microchannel, extensional stress in CEAs and conventional methods, along with exposure time in a single map to illustrate cell damage and operational zones. Finally, this review serves as a practical guideline to help readers in evaluating stress damages, enabling the effective selection of appropriate techniques that optimize cell viability and separation efficiency for biological and clinical applications.

Background: Although several Utstein variables are known to independently improve survival, how they moderate the effect of emergency medical service (EMS) response times on survival is unknown. Objectives: To quantify how public location, witnessed status, bystander CPR, and bystander AED shock individually and jointly moderate the effect of EMS response time delays on OHCA survival. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was a secondary analysis of the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Epistry-Cardiac Arrest database (December 2005 to June 2015). We included all adult, non-traumatic, non-EMS witnessed, and EMS-treated OHCAs from eleven sites across the US and Canada. We trained a logistic regression model with standard Utstein control variables and interaction terms between EMS response time and the four aforementioned OHCA characteristics. Results: 102,216 patients were included. Three of the four characteristics – witnessed OHCAs (OR = 0.962), bystander CPR (OR = 0.968) and public location (OR = 0.980) – increased the negative effect of a one-minute delay on the odds of survival. In contrast, a bystander AED shock decreased the negative effect of a one-minute response time delay on the odds of survival (OR = 1.064). The magnitude of the effect of a one-minute delay in EMS response time on the odds of survival ranged from 1.3% to 9.8% (average: 5.3%), depending on the underlying OHCA characteristics. Conclusions: Delays in EMS response time had the largest reduction in survival odds for OHCAs that did not receive a bystander AED shock but were witnessed, occurred in public, and/or received bystander CPR. A bystander AED shock appears to be protective against a delay in EMS response time. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Sustainable city development concerns various dimensions such as citizen well-being, urban infrastructure, environmental friendliness, accessible transportation, and solid economics. Effective utilization of resources and energy is inevitable if a city wishes to transit towards sustainability. A sustainable city assessment framework is a useful tool in measuring and evaluating the management of the city resources without negative impact on the environment, facilitating the city to grant the well-being of the citizen in terms of safety, happiness, and convenience. The management can make use of the framework in planning and executing various policies for robust economic growth. Moving towards a status of a sustainable city is of great interest to an emerging city like Chiang Mai in Thailand. As a case study, Chiang Mai is unique in terms of its medium size, with the potential to be the regional hub. Chiang Mai is the 2nd largest city in Thailand, located in a strategic location and surrounded by diverse and nice natural environments, and is the center of medical and education excellence in northern Thailand. In this works, an overview of sustainable city indicators employed for several cities was conducted. The suitability of key indices was evaluated and discussed against the context of Chiang Mai. The Thai government's bio-circular-green (BCG) economy concept was also considered for economic and social development along with environmental protection to properly realize the potential of the city. From the preliminary findings, potential indicators of the sustainable city assessment may be grouped into three main components: economic, social, and environmental. Useful plans and guidelines from the sustainable city assessment framework were also proposed for the future development and expansion of Chiang Mai.

A novel drone-based aerosol sampling system, integrated with a rotating cascade impactor, was developed to enable size-selective sampling of atmospheric particles at upper altitudes. The system features rotating impaction stages that enable particle deposition suitable for single-particle analysis. For the first time, this platform was combined with Raman microspectroscopy (RMS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to perform detailed physicochemical characterization of airborne particles, including submicron aerosols, across ground level and aloft. Applied during a high-pollution event, the methodology enabled the characterization of particle mixing states, chemical functional groups, and size-dependent features that may be associated with aerosol transformation mechanisms. Single-particle analysis showed that internally mixed particles in the coarse-mode size range (1.35–5.5 μm) accounted for 53 % of the total in the upper-level sample, exceeding single-component particles by 20 %, which suggests multiphase processing and aging. Among sulfate-containing coarse particles, CaSO 4 was the dominant species (38 %), indicating secondary formation through heterogeneous reactions during long-range transport In the submicron range (<1 μm), nitrate particles dominated (77 %), attributed to freshly formed aerosols resulting from coastal air masses with limited aging. These results highlight the significance of integrating high-resolution vertical aerosol profiling into atmospheric observations, revealing differences not captured by ground-based measurements. Beyond the field findings, this study also demonstrates the utility of a lightweight, drone-mounted rotating cascade impactor system, which enables scalable, size-selective, and altitude-resolved single-particle sampling under atmospheric conditions. This integrated approach offers a novel and practical framework for advancing both aerosol instrumentation and our understanding of atmospheric particle dynamics.

The utilization of green synthesis methods for the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has gained attention due to their eco-friendly nature. However, it is important to acknowledge a limitation of green synthesis approaches, which often involves longer reaction times compared to conventional methods. In this context, microwave-assisted synthesis emerges as an effective strategy to address this challenge, thanks to its rapid and efficient heating. In this study, the influence of microwave time on the synthesis of AgNPs using Seminyak (Champeria sp.) leaf extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent was observed. The microwave time was systematically varied at intervals of 1, 3, and 5 minutes to evaluate its effects on the size and morphology of the resulting AgNPs. Based on UV Vis spectrophotometry results, a broader peak with the tendency for the peak to shift towards higher wavelengths was observed as the microwave irradiation time increased, indicating the increment of AgNPs particle size. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed previous results where extended microwave time led to a gradual augmentation of nanoparticle size from 26.8 ± 10.9 nm for 1 min to 35.6 ± 9.4 nm for 3 min, while 5 min microwave time produce the formation of agglomerated AgNPs.

Technology integration has been applied in the industrial world for the production process, distribution, employment to worker training. The training in Vocational Education is expected to facilitate every learning with various technological transformations that develop. engineering Mathematics and engineering Physics are lessons that must be given to vocational students as a vocational basis. This study aims to explore the impact of using technology in vocational learning. This study uses qualitative research methods, with an emic approach. The theories used are: (1) Critical Theory from Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno regarding assumptions; (2) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory regarding perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use; and (3) the concept of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s teachings about “ngerti”, “ngroso” and “nglakoni". The results of this study are: (1) the integration of technology provides benefits to student learning activities seen from the critical theory that learning theory is not boring so that students become more active to take part in learning engineering mathematics and engineering physics; (2) the integration of technology in learning provides positive emotions for students in terms of the perceived benefits and perceived ease of use both from the software and hardware devices they have to solve problems in engineering mathematics and engineering physics; (3) technology integration benefits students’ curiosity about "ngerti", "ngroso" and "nglakoni" according to the concept of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s teachings seen from seeing the lecturer in explaining the material, demonstrating software and hardware devices, viewing, remember and mark, and imitate implementation in everyday life.

Influenced by the innovative technological advances made in recent years, a number of major economies are increasing their national investment in building decision support systems applicable to the industrial sector. This study was conducted with government support to analyze big data in engineering accumulated from the past, develop tools for forecasting and risk management, and use them to build systems that support decision-making. The target of system development for this study is the industrial engineering sector, also known as engineering- Procurement-Construction (EPC), and is largely divided into five modules, as follows. First, engineering design cost prediction targeted accurately predicting Man-Hour (M/H) and provided useful references to contractors and project managers by developing models that predict design costs in the engineering field. Using the M/H prediction model developed by this research, M/H under similar environments or conditions can be predicted and solutions prepared on the project start stage to manage potential risks. Second, engineering design error analysis was conducted with the purpose of helping project implementation risk management by developing a system to analyze actual design error data that occurred in past projects in order to minimize and prevent design errors. Third, engineering design change analysis was conducted to analyze amounts that could be added by changing order and preparing countermeasures in advance due to design changes occurring during the project. The system was built to support decision-making as a result of utilizing accumulated data. Fourth, engineering Invitation to Bid (ITB) analysis established a support system to efficiently perform ITB analysis and carry out new processes that automatically detect and present provisions that could pose risks. The classification of vehicles is a matter of great importance for traffic control and management, helping with traffic surveillance as well as in statistical data collection. Among the several vehicular classification techniques, the most popular uses inductive loop sensors, because they achieve high accuracy rate at low cost. This paper proposes 5 different vehicle classification models by inductive waveform analysis: KNN, SVC, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and Voting Classifier. A brief introduction to the mathematical basis of these models and the main forms of vehicle detection are also presented. The obtained results reached an accuracy of 94% and showed how inductive waveform analysis is still a valid option for vehicle classification.

We report an all-aqueous and biocompatible platform for the generation of polyelectrolyte microcapsules using magnetic water-in-water droplet microfluidics. We use a polymeric aqueous two-phase system to generate the droplets. To functionalize the droplets with paramagnetic properties, we add ferrofluid to the droplet phase, which also contains the positively charged polyelectrolyte. Utilizing a magnetic field, the magnetic droplets are then moved to a second phase which contains the negatively charged polyelectrolyte, where the polyelectrolytes meet at the interface of the droplet and form a shell. Such polyelectrolyte microcapsules have applications in drug delivery and cell mimicry. © 2019 CBMS-0001.
