Heat exchangers are critical for thermal energy management efficiency in aerospace, automotive, food processing, and energy sector operations. This thorough study analyzes the thermal performance upgrades for different heat exchanger systems, particularly fins. Finned heat exchangers—including shell-and-tube, double-pipe, and compact types—enhance heat transfer through advanced geometries and manufacturing. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHXs) perform well in cross-flow and phase-change but face maintenance and cost challenges. Double-pipe heat exchangers (DPHEs) improve performance but often have higher pressure drops and limited real-world testing. Compact heat exchangers (CHE) are space-efficient and benefit from additive manufacturing but face fabrication complexity and scalability issues and need further optimization and material innovation. The review analyzes new methods that optimize heat transfer performance using modern fin shapes, including rectangle-shaped fins, triangles, trapezoids, pin fins, and wavy fins. According to test results, these alternative fin designs lead to enhanced heat transfer rates and maintainable pressure drop levels. Scientific research has validated wavy fins as heat transfer performers because they enhance the Nusselt number to 28 % above circular tubes. Using ten longitudinal and wavy fins demonstrated maximum performance capabilities by reaching an overall response value of 1.33 in DPHEs. Future academic research moves toward designing compound heat exchangers from different materials while investigating novel performance-enhancing alternatives for thermal management systems in multiple applications. The review is a key reference to bridge gaps between heat exchanger design and optimization methods. © 2024

This paper addresses the problem of dissipativity-based fault tolerant control (FTC) based on fault hiding approach. In particular, a static reconfiguration block (RB) is used for reconfiguration of faulty systems. Such block performs a loop transformation by inserting series, feedback, and feedforward gains to a system including plant, sensor or actuator faults. The proposed approach consists in recovering dissipativity and passivity conditions of a previously dissipative system, ensuring that the reconfigured system has the same supply function of the nominal system. Numerical examples illustrate how such approach can be used to recover the asymptotic stability by fault hiding even for nonlinear systems. Furthermore, LMI-based conditions for designing the proposed RB are provided for stability recovery for linear systems.

In the current industrial revolution, additive manufacturing (AM) embodies a promising technology that can enhance the effectiveness, adaptability, and competitiveness of supply chains (SCs). Moreover, it facilitates the development of distributed SCs, thereby enhancing product availability, inventory levels, and lead time. However, the wide adoption of AM in industrial SCs creates various challenges, leading to new difficulties for SC design. In this context, this paper proposes a new design approach to AM SCs using optimization methods. More specifically, the proposed approach, comprising the pmedian and mixed-integer linear programming models, considers the decision of deploying productive resources (3D printers) in specific locations of generic spare part SCs. The approach was evaluated in a real-world use case of an elevator maintenance service provider. The obtained results demonstrated the promising capabilities of the proposed design approach in managing the challenges arising from the forthcoming widespread use of 3D printers in manufacturing SCs. © 2020, CC-BY-NC-ND.

Traditional modeling for sound propagation in porous media has been done knowing the macroscopic physical parameters intrinsic to the material. Using Bayesian model-based analysis the uncertainties of these parameters and their effect on the accuracy of the selected model can be studied. The Horoshenkov Model [Horoshenkov, et al., JASA vol 139 (2016)], or similarly Miki Model [Miki, JASJ, vol 11, pp.25-28 (1990)], can be used to estimate the mean pore size and porosity of the material under test from measurements of surface impedance or absorption coefficient using glass beads of known diameter and layer thickness as an experimental model. The accuracy of these models can be compared using quantitative measures such as mean, variance and the interdependence of the estimated parameters. The rise in energy-efficient, sustainable building operations necessitates the development of advanced innovations that reduce heating and cooling demands while maintaining comfortable indoor thermal conditions. Phase change materials (PCMs) demonstrate significant potential as a stabilization mechanism through latent heat storage for managing residential indoor temperatures;however, their integration into systems requires further optimisation. This review examines PCM-assisted ventilation technologies—specifically ventilated façades, roofs, and windows—highlighting their energy performance, which ranges from 7.7 % to 32.8 %, and their capacity to reduce peak temperatures by 2.5 °C to 7.02 °C. These improvements are influenced by PCM thickness of 15–35 mm and melting temperatures of 15–37 °C. The combination of PCM-enhanced hybrid systems with natural or mechanical ventilation has shown greater operational effectiveness, particularly in hot climates and when integrated with adaptive control systems to achieve optimal performance. Despite their benefits, widespread adoption of PCM technologies is hindered by high material costs, hysteresis effects, and limited discharge cycle efficiency. Nevertheless, PCM-enhanced ventilation systems have proven capable of supporting sustainable, low-energy buildings. Continued research is needed to develop cost-effective design strategies, automated control mechanisms, and climate-responsive optimisations to fully realize their potential. © 2025 The Author(s)

Structural engineering has proven effective in tailoring the photocatalytic properties of semiconductor nanostructures. In this work, a sophisticated double-hollow yolk@shell nanostructure composed of a plasmonic, mobile, hollow Au nanosphere (HGN) yolk and a permeable, hollow CdS shell is proposed to achieve remarkable solar hydrogen production. The shell thickness of HGN@CdS is finely adjusted from 7.7, 18.4 to 24.5 nm to investigate its influence on the photocatalytic performance. Compared with pure HGN, pure CdS, a physical mixture of HGN and CdS, and a counterpart single-hollow cit-Au@CdS yolk@shell nanostructure, HGN@CdS exhibits superior hydrogen production under visible light illumination (λ = 400–700 nm). The apparent quantum yield of hydrogen production reaches 8.2% at 320 nm, 6.2% at 420 nm, and 4.4% at 660 nm. The plasmon-enhanced activity at 660 nm is exceptional, surpassing the plasmon-induced photoactivities of the state-of-the-art plasmonic photocatalysts ever reported. The superiority of HGN@CdS originates from the creation of charge separation state at HGN/CdS heterojunction, the considerably long-lived hot electrons of plasmonic HGN, the magnified electric field, and the advantageous features of double-hollow yolk@shell nanostructures. The findings can provide a guideline for the rational design of versatile double-hollow yolk@shell nanostructures for widespread photocatalytic applications. © 2024 The Author(s). In this paper, we address a decision-making problem related to the requirement of costly equipment by medical diagnostic services in a segmented public healthcare system comprising several institutions and private providers. The problem is motivated by a real-world case of the Mexican healthcare system. The aim of this study is to determine which hospitals can provide the service, their capacity levels, the allocation of demand in each institution, and the referral of patients to other institutions or private providers while minimizing annual investment costs and operating costs required to satisfy demand. A mixed-integer linear programming model that takes into account different characteristics such as patient acuity levels, types of equipment, and demand variation through time is introduced. The model was empirically assessed to evaluate its impact on the decision-making process. A sensitivity analysis to evaluate solution behavior for variations of critical parameters was performed. The results showed that some values could generate a significant effect on the total costs for the service coverage and in the efficiency of the service, whereas overall results indicated the usefulness of the model. While this model is valuable to aid this decision-making problem, it is limited to medium-size instances of up to 90 facilities. To solve the problems with larger instances, a two-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed. In the first phase, the method uses a greedy construction mechanism, and in the second phase, it attempts to improve the solution. Empirical evidence on large instances shows that good solutions with low computing times are reached in comparison with the exact method. © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Hard turning is considered a strong candidate to partially replace grinding in finishing operations. However, as in the grinding operation, hard turning produces high temperatures that contributes to accelerate the cutting tool wear. In order to minimize this effect, cutting fluids can be applied as an alternative, even when PCBN inserts are used as cutting tools. However, there are many drawbacks associated with the use of cutting fluids, particularly those of mineral base, as they are hazardous to the environment. In this context, the need for more eco-friendly cutting fluids is growing and liquid nitrogen (LN2) offers a promising alternative. Previous studies have shown that LN2 can significantly reduce the cutting tool wear rate in comparison with other cooling strategies, and this is normally attributed to a reduction in the tool-chip interface temperature. However, investigations on the tool-chip interface temperature in cryogenic machining are scarce in the literature, particularly with regard to the turning of tool steels, and this study was performed to partially fill this gap. The tool-chip interface temperature during the turning of quenched and tempered AISI D6 tool steel, under dry conditions and using LN2, was investigated. A tool-workpiece thermocouple system was developed for this purpose and calibrated using a data acquisition system based on the low-cost Arduino Uno platform. In the turning tests, liquid nitrogen was delivered at the tool flank face of PCBN inserts at three cutting speeds with a constant feed rate and depth of cut. The results showed that LN2 was effective in reducing the tool-chip interface temperature at the lowest cutting speed;however, when this cutting parameter was increased, the reduction in the interface temperature was minimal as compared with the dry condition. © 2021, CC BY.

For damage detection, this research article discusses an easy-to-compute damage index derived from the governing dynamic of the structure that has potential practical application in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The research uses simplified structural models to explore the sensitivity of the index to damages, to compare the index performance with a traditional but popular damage detection method, and to understand the local/global predictive capability of the index. The research uses two simple models, namely, single- and two-degree-of-freedom systems. The results suggest that the damage index is local, that can only monitor damages occurring near the points of measurements, but it is sensitive to damages, unlike the natural frequency, which is global but less sensitive.

Understanding the reliability of engineering methods is crucial for its adoption and deployment. This research focuses on the reliability of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) method via the use of the F statistic for damage detection. To the author best knowledge, the method is rather classic but its realibility has not been discussed in the context of a large data size. Priory, the research anticipates that the accuracy is a function of the damage level. In this study, we evaluate 3500 cases with five levels of structural integrity, namely, healthy condition and damaged conditions with 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% damage levels. The dataset is established via a numerical analysis of a seven degree-of-freedom system loaded with a concentrated dynamic force with random magnitude. A spring on the system is reduced in its stiffness to simulate damages. Our significant findings are the following: it is challenging for the PSD-based method to differentiate the healthy condition from the damaged conditions when the damage level is small. However, the reliability is high at 95% probability when the structural integrity has dropped by five percent.
