Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is a vital step in using mathematical models and simulations to take decisions. The field of cardiac simulation has begun to explore and adopt UQ methods to characterise uncertainty in model inputs and how that propagates through to outputs or predictions. In this perspective piece we draw attention to an important and under-addressed source of uncertainty in our predictions — that of uncertainty in the model structure or the equations themselves. The difference between imperfect models and reality is termed model discrepancy, and we are often uncertain as to the size and consequences of this discrepancy. Here we provide two examples of the consequences of discrepancy when calibrating models at the ion channel and action potential scales. Furthermore, we attempt to account for this discrepancy when calibrating and validating an ion channel model using different methods, based on modelling the discrepancy using Gaussian processes (GPs) and autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) models, then highlight the advantages and shortcomings of each approach. Vertical axis wind turbines present several advantages over the horizontal axis machines that make them suitable to a variety of wind conditions. However due to the complexity of VAWT aerodynamics, available literature on VAWT performance in steady and turbulent wind conditions is limited. This paper aims to numerically predict the performance of a 5kW VAWT under steady wind conditions through computational fluid dynamics modeling by varying turbine configuration parameters. Two dimensional VAWT models using a cambered blade (1.5%) were created with open field boundary extents. Turbine configuration parameters studied include blade mounting position, blade fixing angle, and rotor solidity. Baseline case with peak Cp of 0.31 at tip speed ratio of 4 has the following parameters: mounting position at 0.5c, zero fixing angle, 3 blades (solidity = 0.3). Independent parametric studies were carried out and results show that a blade mounting position of 0.7c from the leading edge produces best performance with maximum Cp = 0.315 while worst case is a mounting position of 0.15c with peak Cp = 0.273. Fixing angle study reveals a toe-out setting of-1° producing the best performance with peak Cp of 0.315 and the worst setting at toe-in of 1.5° with peak Cp of 0.287. The solidity study resulted in a best case of 4 blades (solidity = 0.4) with peak Cp = 0.316 and worst case of 2 blades (solidity = 0.2) with peak Cp = 0.283. Copyright © 2017 ASME.

For the first time, CMOS inverters and 6T-SRAM cells based on vertically stacked gate-all-around complementary FETs (CFETs) are experimentally demonstrated. Manufacturing difficulties of vertically stacked source and drain electrodes of the CFETs have been overcome by using junctionless transistors, thereby reducing the number of lithographic steps required. Furthermore, with post metallization treatments, both the voltage transfer characteristics (VTCs) of CMOS inverters and butterfly curves of SRAM show significant improvements due to the symmetry of nMOS and pMOS threshold voltages. Simulation shows that 3-dimensional CFET inverters have lower input parasitic capacitance than standard 2-dimensional CMOS, leading to reduced gate delay and lower power consumption.

At the Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe determining accident-prone areas on roads in Lhokseumawe still using manual systems. Determination of accident-prone areas are less effective because the police Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe just using the data of the last year and had to repeatedly calculate manually accident-prone areas based on the number of human casualties. In this study the system implementation CUSUM method (Cummulative Summary) to determine the accident-prone areas designed using the web-based programming language PHP. In this system there are three processes to determine areas prone to accidents, the accident rate calculations based on the weighted severity, blacksite calculations using the Z-Score method for determining areas prone to accident blackspots and calculations using the CUSUM method to determine the critical points of an accident. The data used are secondary data obtained from the Police Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe years 2009-2013. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Chirality is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the natural world. Many biomolecules without inversion symmetry such as amino acids and sugars are chiral molecules. Measuring and controlling molecular chirality at a high precision down to the atomic scale are highly desired in physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, however, have remained challenging. Herein, we achieve all-optical reconfigurable chiral meta-molecules experimentally using metallic and dielectric colloidal particles as artificial atoms or building blocks to serve at least two purposes. One is that the on-demand meta-molecules with strongly enhanced optical chirality are well-suited as substrates for surface-enhanced chiroptical spectroscopy of chiral molecules and as active components in optofluidic and nanophotonic devices. The other is that the bottom-up-assembled colloidal meta-molecules provide microscopic models to better understand the origin of chirality in the actual atomic and molecular systems. This paper aims to present a fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) controller on multiple autonomous mobile robots (multirobot system) in order to complete a foraging task in semiunknown environments, and to compare the FCM results with a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). In this work, the limits of the searching area are known. However, everything within it (goals, obstacles and position of other robots during navigation) is unknown. The foraging task simulates a real-life application of robots on rescue missions, where the main objective is rescuing the victims of a tragedy, or lost in a forest, or even victims of a major accident in an industry. Although it is a simulated environment, we tested the autonomy and cooperation among all robots for this kind of operation in different simulated scenarios. We used a reactive (real-time) architecture to enhance the robots' global robustness on dealing with unpredictable situations. The results imply that the FCM approach presented, in general, less simulation processing time and distance traveled, without significant prejudice in the explored area. In this way, we expect to collaborate and serve as inspiration for future works on this research area.

Currently the computational modelling tools, expert algorithms for image segmentation and three-dimensional printing devices have improved the process of manufacture of customized pieces in the context of automation of prosthesis modelling. Among several strategies to obtain the correct shape of a missing bone part, we explore a modelling method based on geometric features defined by Bezier cubic curves. The data is obtained from sets of slices of tomographic scans as a reference. From the images, we know about data from the edges in the image but we do not have any information about a missing area in a specific bone region. Thus, the objective is to search patterns for features whose values are known from similar tomographic image which matches to fill a hole in a bone. Due the free form of a bone there are a lot of parameters to be evaluated. Thus, a Data Mining approach is applied for classification and to discover the best features as shape descriptors. In this way, the prosthesis manufacture can be automated in all stages among image scanning and printing. © 2017 DEStech Publications. All rights reserved.

During drilling operation, a wide range of undesirable vibrations can be induced by the nonlinear bit-rock interaction, which may cause fatigue failure of the drillstring, increase the bit wear rate, and reduce drilling efficiency. Among many undesirable drilling system dynamics, the stickslip vibration of a drillstring is most common and detrimental. In this paper, a two degree-of-freedom lumped model is established to capture the drilling system dynamics. At the bottom hole extremity, a bit-rock interaction model is developed to describe the nonlinear relationship between the bit angular speed and the torque on bit. In order to ease the stick-slip vibration, an optimal control policy is developed using the dynamic programming (DP) approach. Based on the features of the obtained policy, dimension reduction is achieved, which significantly improves the computational efficiency. According to the simulation results, the proposed DP based controller and the reduced-order controller can effectively suppress the stickslip vibration of the drillstring.

There have been several studies suggesting that protein structures solved by NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography show significant differences. To understand the origin of these differences, we assembled a database of high-quality protein structures solved by both methods. We also find significant differences between NMR and crystal structures|in the root-mean-square deviations of the Cα atomic positions, identities of core amino acids, backbone and sidechain dihedral angles, and packing fraction of core residues. In contrast to prior studies, we identify the physical basis for these differences by modelling protein cores as jammed packings of amino-acid-shaped particles. We find that we can tune the jammed packing fraction by varying the degree of thermalization used to generate the packings. For an athermal protocol, we find that the average jammed packing fraction is identical to that observed in the cores of protein structures solved by x-ray crystallography. In contrast, highly thermalized packing-generation protocols yield jammed packing fractions that are even higher than those observed in NMR structures. These results indicate that thermalized systems can pack more densely than athermal systems, which suggests a physical basis for the structural differences between protein structures solved by NMR and x-ray crystallography.
