Closed-cell superplastic Zn-22Al alloy foams were manufactured through the melt foaming process using sodium hydrogen carbonate powder as a foaming agent. Foaming tests were carried out under different foaming additive amounts of foaming agent. The porosity of Zn-22Al alloy foams were between 30 and 64%. The cell wall consisted of fine equiaxial crystal grains after solution treatment. The compressive properties of the Zn-22Al alloy foams were investigated at room temperature and high temperature. Zn-22Al alloy foams exhibited high strain rate sensitivity, which was caused by superplastic deformation of the cell wall material. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

On the estimation of moisture permeability and advection coefficients of a wood fibre material using the optimal experiment design approach

This paper presents a practical application of the concept of Optimal Experiment Design (OED) for the determination of properties of porous materials with in-situ measurements and an identification method. First, an experimental set-up was presented and used for the measurement of relative humidity within a wood fibre material submitted to single and multiple steps of relative humidity variation. Then, the application of OED enabled to plan the experimental conditions in terms of sensor positioning and boundary conditions out of 20 possible designs. The OED search was performed using the Fisher information matrix and a priori knowledge of the parameters. It ensures to provide the best accuracy of the identification method and thus the estimated parameter. Optimal design results have been found for single steps from the relative humidity ø = 10 to 75 %, with one sensor located at the position X between 4 and 6 cm, for the estimation of moisture permeability coefficients, while from ø = 75 % to ø = 33 %, with one sensor located at X° = 3 cm, for the estimation of the advection coefficient. The OED has also been applied for the identification of couples of parameters. A sample submitted to multiple relative humidity steps (ø = 10 - 75 - 33 - 75 %) with a sensor placed at X °= 5 cm was found as the best option for determining both properties with the same experiment. These OED parameters have then been used for the determination of moisture permeability and advection coefficients. The estimated moisture permeability coefficients are twice higher than the a priori values obtained using standard methods. Multi-rotor air vehicles are controlled by varying the rotor speeds. The variation of the rotor speeds enable the altitude change, yaw motion as well as pitch and roll motions of the vehicle. Pitch and roll motion leads to translation motions along x and y axes. When the air vehicle is used for surveillance type missions, the tilting of the vehicle is not desired, since the camera will also be tilted with the vehicle as it moves. In this work, the design and manufacturing of a quadrotor with tiltable rotors that can move without tilting the vehicle has been described. Firstly the proposed system has been designed, and then it was manufactured. The rotor tilting amount is measured with an IMU, and the required value can be set with two servos for each rotor. Successful experiments show the benefits of the proposed system over regular multi-rotor vehicles.

In this study, adsorption characteristics of ethanol onto consolidated composite adsorbents have been investigated experimentally. The prepared consolidated composites are combinations of highly porous activated carbon powder namely Maxsorb III, expanded graphite (EG) and binder with judiciously selected mass ratios. Samples with different packing densities and different compositions have been prepared. Adsorption equilibrium uptakes of ethanol onto the prepared samples have been measured. Experiments have been conducted across assorted adsorption temperatures that are useful for the operation of adsorption chillers. The Dubinin-Astakhov (D-A) and the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) equations have been used to fit the adsorption isotherm data. Thermal conductivities of the prepared composites have been measured using a microflash apparatus. Results showed that the thermal conductivities of prepared samples are significantly higher than those of activated carbon powders.

Implementing ERP may become one of the strategies to enhance both management competence and competitiveness of small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in fashion industry. For an ERP implementation to be effective in and financially efficient, required ERP modules should be identified in accordance with business processes that are carried out and validated according to the real needs of fashion SMEs. The validation processes are crucial to perform so as to avoid building an information system unsuitable with the company needs and to save resources that otherwise would be spent to fix any faults discovered in further stages in the planning and implementation processes of an ERP. The purpose of the research was to validate the findings of an earlier research that had identified fashion SMEs' need of ERP system. The validation was performed by using a multiple case studies method, carried out in six micro, small, and medium enterprises of fashion in Bandung by identifying what were the functional aspects of system that have been needed and implemented by the objects of the case study, both those involved in earlier researches and beyond the objects of earlier researches' case studies. From this validation process, it was found that both product marketing and sales module and financial and accounting module were valued as valid for the three enterprise levels. For small and medium fashion enterprises, production and procurement module has also been concluded as valid. Meanwhile, the need of retail management module was determined as valid for the three levels of fashion enterprises, but it was determined as an add-on module because the needs do not depended on the company size but on the company's choice of its retail selling methods.

Based on the formulation of the problem to be discussed by the writer is to know: the influence of 0.4 mm spark gap variation, and standard spark plug type, to CO and HC, the influence of 0.5 mm spark plug gap variation, and variation of platinum spark plug on CO and HC, influence of spark gap variation 0,6mm, and variation of iridium spark plug type to CO and HC emission Method used to obtain data needed to support the writer that is research method with experiment, literature study method or literature study The result of this research concludes that there is spark gap influence 0.4 mm, with variations of standard plug, platinum and iridium spark plugs against CO and HC emissions, where the lowest CO value is 0.27% and HC 98 ppm, 0.5 mm spark plug with lowest CO 0.15% and HC 46 ppm, 0.6 mm spark plug gap the lowest CO value of 0.19% and HC 24 ppm. Speed, agility, maneuverability, range and efficiency of birds and insects are far beyond the conventional flying mini vehicles. There are various research works to create vehicles that imitate these amazing creatures. In this paper, a wing mechanism is designed for a micro aerial vehicle using four flapping wings. In this system, a four-bar mechanism is preferred as the wing mechanism. In order to obtain flapping motion from rotation of the motor, a crank rocker mechanism is used by connecting the shortest link to the fixed link. Flapping range (swing angle) is determined by obtaining dead-center positions. It is chosen as large as possible since it is related to the lift force. Optimization of transmission angle is made in order to transmit torque from the input link to the output link with a minimum loss. The link length ratio is computed by deciding swing angle and angle between dead center positions. While computing the ratio of lengths of the links, deviation of transmission angle from 90° is attempted to be adjusted to a minimum level. The dimensions of the wings are determined with respect to the lift force. The prototype vehicle has been designed and manufactured with the obtained results.

Bio-energy from biomass can be used as renewable energy to reduce CO2 emission in some industrial processes. Fast pyrolysis has emerged as the most promising technology to convert organic materials into liquid fuels at a short time but it still faces some technical challenges in improving product yield, its quality and process energy efficiency. Microwave assisted pyrolysis (MAP) of biomass provides distinctive environment to solve these challenges. In this paper, the pyrolysis of Lemon Eucalyptus was investigated using microwave energy as the heat source, and the yield and characteristics of the pyrolysis oils (i.e. elemental analysis, hydrocarbon composition, and potential fuel properties) and gases are presented and discussed. Here, a pilot unit with 150 kg per hour capacity using MAP technique was built in order to evaluate the energy potential of gases (non-condensable gases-NCG) and liquid (condensable gases-CG) of a biomass pyrolysis plant. The pyrolysis process was in continuous mode and in two stages, biomass drying and pyrolysis, with charcoal production, pyrolysis gas and bio-oil. The results showed that about 63% of the raw material was converted to charcoal and 37% to pyrolysis gas and bio-oil. In the pyrolysis gas fraction, 46% corresponds to the nitrogen from the air. There was a 1638 kg of air entering in the system, which was verified by mass balance. This air inlet implies several drawbacks, mainly explosion risks. The bio-oil fraction was analyzed showing that there was a 45% of pyroligneous gas followed by about 33% of water. It can be seen that the lower calorific value of condensable gases can be increased with the removal of water from its composition. The study of energy availability showed an averaged value of 5.60 MWh of thermal energy per ton of charcoal produced in the prototype.

This study investigates the interplay among design method, technology enhanced learning, and global engineering learning. It presents the process of how a team of engineering educators employed a set of design methods to integrate a variety of learning technologies in order to develop an interactive learning environment, upon which, multiple global engineering courses have been successfully developed. The designers went through a systemic design process of stakeholder involvement, functional design, and conceptual design. As a result, two key functional requirements of the interactive learning environment are proposed: (1) connect globally distributed classrooms and (2) promote peer-to-peer interactions among global learners. And two corresponding design concepts are generated: (1) videoconferencing classroom and (2) interactive eLearning system. An evaluation was conducted upon a particular global engineering course, namely "Principles and Practices of Global Innovation", which was served by 130 students who signed up from six global universities. At the conclusion of the course, an evaluation was conducted to solicit the participants' satisfaction with the interactive learning environment, and the impacts of this unique technology-enabled global learning experience on their knowledge, skill and attitude of Information and Communication Technology. © 2016 TEMPUS Publications.
