Radio frequency energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest as a technique of enabling self-powered wireless networks. This technique faces several challenges, such as the receiving and the rectifying modules of a rectenna system. Multiband antennas provide several comparative advantages against the goal of maximizing the amount of energy harvesting. In this work, we present a multiband microstrip patch antenna with three slits operating in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. A feasible solution of the antenna is obtained by the application of a recently introduced nature-inspired optimization technique, namely the Coyote Optimization Algorithm. The proposed antenna operates satisfactorily in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. Measured results of the proposed antenna exhibit an acceptable performance (multiband frequency operation, maximum gain of 3.94 dBi, broadside operation) and demonstrate features of operation, which make it a strong candidate for various RF energy harvesting applications. © 2020 IEEE.

Healthcare is highly complex, sensitive and needs constant improvements. Several works have already been developed to support those processes. However, finding the optimum solution takes much work and time. Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms (MOGA) improve the results by finding the optimal trade-off between multiple conflicting objectives and exploring the problem space more thoroughly. This study presents an enhanced framework that integrates Process Mining (PM), Discrete Event Simulation (DES), and Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms (MOGAs) into an optimized, end-to-end pipeline. This framework builds upon an existing non-optimized approach to enable decision-makers to explore and implement Key Performance Indicator (KPI)-oriented solutions directly from raw log data. The framework navigates vast and complex solution spaces by embedding MOGAs into the KPI-oriented simulation process, delivering optimized scenarios with improved performance, boosting decision-making efficiency. The clinical stroke pathway, covering symptoms’ onset to hospital discharge, was utilized as a case. This research demonstrates how optimization techniques with classical techniques into one unified framework can accelerate healthcare improvements, offering scalable applications to other domains beyond stroke care. The results demonstrate that using MOGA leads to improved solutions compared to the non-optimized framework, and this approach can be evaluated in short periods due to its performance. The findings underscore the solutions’ sensitivity to changes in simulation parameters, emphasizing the importance of considering multiple objectives when dealing with complex decision-making problems in the healthcare industry. Future studies are suggested to extend the model, compare the effectiveness of different optimization methods within the framework, and test the framework's applicability to other domains. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In the fusion-based welding processes, filler materials are commonly used to adjust and improve the composition of the fusion zone with the aim of optimizing both microstructure and mechanical properties. However, in the field of welding high entropy alloys, the influence of different filler materials on the microstructure and mechanical response is still scarce, owing to the yet incipient usage of welding technologies for these novel, advanced engineering alloys. To bridge this knowledge gap, Inconel 625 filler wire was used during gas metal arc welding of the well-known CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy. To systematically analyze the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the welded joints, multiscale characterization techniques were employed. It is shown that the different regions of the welded joint possess distinct microstructural features due to the weld thermal cycle, which is further compounded in the fusion zone by the introduction of the filler material. The use of Inconel 625 filler promotes a solid solution strengthening effect in the fusion zone and became the main contributor to the yield strength of this region (302 MPa (via solid solution strengthening) vs 478 MPa (yield stress from tensile experiments). Since Hall-Petch strengthening is predominant in both base material and heat affected zone, but not on the fusion zone due to the large grain structure that developed, the addition of Inconel 625 filler demonstrates to be a feasible approach to increase the typically low fusion zone strength. By coupling microstructural characterization with mechanical property analysis, aided by the calculation of the strengthening mechanisms, we unveil processing, microstructure, property relationships, providing a broader basis for the widespread application of gas metal arc welding for high entropy alloys. © 2025 The Authors

The development of interoperability is more and more an essential task for all kinds of organizations. It needs to be measured, verified, and continuously improved. With the advent of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Digital Transformation, as well as all technologies it brings, such as big data, cloud computing, and mobile applications, this subject become quite ordinary and necessary, not only in a manufacturing scenario but also in a business process. As crucial benefits, it can bring possible gains for developers and users, also reduce the efforts to communicate multiple and different platforms. Like all new implementations, there are significant challenges that have to be overcome to allow satisfactory results. In this paper, after a systematic literature review to better understand the technologies and this new situation, we conduct a study involving a case in a business process, presenting some actions that can be executed and technologies that can be implemented to reach a well interoperable environment. For instance, to analyze the interoperability maturity level and to adopt ontologies as an alternative to integrate heterogeneous systems. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we give conclusions and perspectives for futures works. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

An industrial enterprise in a competitive environment undergoing constant change, which wishes to be recognized as World Class, needs a management model that affords its executives a systemic vision. Aware of the need to define an effective and efficient model to manage a company, executives should always ask how it should be defined, implemented and continuously evaluated. In this context, the article presents a computer system, referred to herein as the Socrates CEO Robot, based on the scientific conceptual model (Complex Adaptive systems Integrating the Decision Making Process in industrial Companies) presented by Wollmann and Steiner (2014). The capacity of Socrates to aid the integrated and systemic decision process is verified in competitive business environments of the e-tangram business simulator. The results show that Socrates is capable of managing an industrial enterprise in a virtual competitive environment generated in a business simulator (usually referred to as a business game).

We consider the problem of resequencing a set of prearranged jobs when there is limited resequencing flexibility and sequence dependent changeover costs. Resequencing flexibility is limited by how far forward or backward a job can shift in the sequence relative to its original position. We show how the problem can be solved using dynamic programming in time polynomial in the number of jobs. We also provide numerical results to support managerial insights regarding the value of flexibility. We show that our procedure can be extended to solve a variety of sequencing problems on moving assembly lines.

Supply chain management has become a crucial aspect of the performance of industries and companies as it manages the flow of goods, services, and information in order to fulfil customers need while reducing the total costs. In order to reduce the production total cost, e-procurement is introduced. E-procurement means of reducing cost is by shortening cycle time and create a simpler procurement process. The aim of this research is to develop a vendor management and e-procurement system using the Android platform. The developed system is hoped to be able to even shorten the cycle time, ease vendor selection and provide a more flexible and convenience procurement process. Through data measurement and documentation review, the developed system was tested against these three parameters for their validity. In the end, this research summarizes the test result and conclude based on the test result that those parameters are achieved in the developed vendor management and e-procurement system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The growing need for sustainable energy has encouraged researchers to emphasize on establishing strong electroactive catalysts for improved water-splitting processes. Water-electrolysis study demands electroactive catalysts having outstanding electrocatalytic efficiency and ecologically friendly characteristics to develop considerable hydrogen energy sources. In this work, NiFe₂O₄/PANI nanocomposite was produced through a hydrothermal approach for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The manufactured electrocatalysts were investigated via various physical approaches to analyze the crystallinity, surface area and elemental composition. The electrochemical performance of fabricated NiFe₂O₄/PANI nanocomposite was studied under 1 M KOH, revealing distinctive HER performance with least overpotential (ƞ) of −161 mV to yield current density (j) -10 mA/cm² which is substantially smaller than −218 mV found for pristine NiFe₂O_4. Additionally, electrocatalyst NiFe₂O₄/PANI attains least Tafel slope (63 mV/dec), provides means of electron transport with prolonged durability (50 h) as evaluated by chronoamperometry technique. NiFe₂O₄/PANI has a high potential for water electrolysis as well as other electrochemical procedures owing to its large surface area, several active sites, outstanding durability, fast electron transportation, minimal resistivity and suitable electrical conductivity. As a result, this work shows that the highly effective NiFe₂O₄/PANI nanocomposite serves as the catalyst for future energy-related applications. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The technological paradigm shift is supporting the digital transformation of manufacturing, characterized by emerging industry 4.0 technologies, and the inherent complexity in selecting appropriate technologies. This increasing complexity of technologies, the multiple and conflicting decision criteria, and the abundance of technology alternatives demand a structured process for managers to select technologies to be acquired and implemented. This work derived from the observation of a real problem in a recognized world class automaker company. The identified problem consists in a lack of a consolidated process (procedure) to support managers and specialists in selecting industry 4.0 technologies. This paper aims at extending theory concerning technology management and selection, by proposing a research agenda regarding the solution for the defined problem. A systematic literature review (SLR) is performed to support it, comprising the analysis and synthesis of a review portfolio. The construction of a structured procedure for industry 4.0 technology selection would serve two purposes: (i) to identify the most suitable technology to solve a specific problem, (ii) to support the creation of a technology roadmap to ground a long-term investment plan. The procedure should be able to deal with both purposes to support firms in a digital transformation journey, enabling an objective, rational and traceable decision-making process. © 2021 IISE Annual Conference and Expo 2021.
