This works proposes an electrocardiogram based approach for left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) classification. LVH classification is based on features extracted from the ECG signal, where the main features are the ones related to the QRS wave amplitude and duration. Instead of working on only one LVH criteria, we employed a score which explores the complementarity of the best criteria through a fusion strategy. The best criteria are the ones which discriminate normal and LVH ECGs according to the t-test. We carried out experiments in a database with a group of fifty men, where a half has LVH. The gold standard to detect LVH was the left ventricle mass index measured using echocardiography. Our approach achieved a sensitivity of 69.7%, outperforming all LVH criteria. We have been studying the use of "Rich Media" to support creative and intelligent human activities. Specifically, for over ten years we have been focusing on the 3D space as a "Rich Medium" and developed many 3D sketch systems that support the design of 3D objects. However, we found that designers in the real world do not use them. The fundamental problem is the lack of an indispensable function for using the 3D space. To overcome this problem, we have proposed "life-sized and operable" design principles. Although the new design concept made the 3D space truly useful and promoted the designer to use such a system, it revealed new problems, i.e., Limited design space. In this paper, we extend this "life-sized and operable" 3D sketch system by using three design spaces, which enables the user to traverse between 2D drawing and 3D drawing spaces, between miniature and actual sizes, between rough sketching and precise design, and among still, operable, and hap tic sketching.

This paper presents a workplace ergonomic study in a high-end server manufacturing environment to assess ergonomics risks and enhance the Lean transformation. Operators perform heavy and repetitive lifting and movement of products could place stress on their back and upper extremities. Forceful exertions to move a manual forklift in the workplace area could lead to fatigue and possible damage to muscles and other tissues. The objective of this study is to reduce ergonomics risks to an acceptable level and provide operators with the right tools and proper work environment. Digital human modeling based on the Jack software, is used for risk assessment. Results are analyzed to provide proper solutions. Ergonomic risks assessed include: force and posture risks, noise, vibration, temperature, and illumination. Lean process is implemented in the workplace to reduce the Lean wastes that include waiting time, transportation, and non-value-add processes. Ergonomic improvements are introduced to complement and support the Lean process implementation. Three main ergonomic risks are found to be high and could affect the operators: energy expenditure, posture, and back force. Several modifications are implemented to reduce these risks: the manual forklift is replaced with an automated forklift that is easy to move and requires less human effort, the workplace area is expanded to provide more work space, and the operators are provided with proper tools to perform the task without risk.

This paper presents a study that integrates lean manufacturing and ergonomic principles to redesign and improve the internal transportation process in a high-end server manufacturing environment. Transportation of electronic parts within the factories is an important issue. The current transportation carts present quality hazards to electronic parts and they were not designed to handle the right dimensions and quantities of the newly introduced products. Furthermore, the current flow of carts introduces waiting time for the carts in the assembly areas. Inefficient transportation not only increases the waiting times but also the transportation costs. The objective of this study is to improve the transportation process and redesign transportation carts that are currently used to transport parts between different areas in a high-end server manufacturing environment utilizing lean and ergonomic principles. A new lean-based flow of transportation carts is proposed to reduce the waiting time and transported distance by having separate carts for each area. The new design of the carts represents a Poke-Yoke that prevents the operators from stacking the cards. Ergonomic principles are also considered in the new design. The number of carts required is estimated based on historical demand, outcomes from containment actions, current processes, and inputs from the production-planning department. The new lean-based flow and design of carts have resulted in cost savings and cost avoidance.

Recently, it was proposed a new metaheuristic optimization approach namely bat algorithm (BA), which is based on the fascinating capability of microbats in to find their prey and discriminate different types of insects even in complete darkness. In this paper, we introduce a novel enhanced hybrid approach combining BA with a mutation style operator from differential evolution and beta probability distribution (BADEBD) and report its performance on to identification of the 10 hysteresis parameters for the 2-dimensional Jiles-Atherton hysteresis modeling to a material under rotational excitation. Compared with the classical BA, the proposed BADEBD performs better in terms of the solution accuracy and the convergence rate.

We present a simulation model of colorectal cancer in a heterogeneous population of individuals. The progression of cancer is modeled and is affected by individuals' characteristics and their screening and mode decisions. A discrete choice model determines these compliance and modality choices. We present a framework for analyzing interventions that affect final outcomes by systematically affecting a change in individual choice. Moreover, recognizing that different sub-populations respond differently to interventions, we present a procedure for choosing the most effective intervention, as defined by outcomes. For this cancer model, we evaluate the cost effectiveness of public health interventions that affect people's choice behavior, using as metrics for cost effectiveness downstream outcomes such as cost of care and life years lost to cancer. We use an original comprehensive synthetic population dataset that represents the population of the State of North Carolina.

The ventricular assistance devices (VAD) have been very useful to the patients with chronic heart failures. But, regular consumption of anticoagulants to suppress the thrombosis results into many bleeding related complications. Such complications are also observed in the patients getting hemodialysis and patients undergoing heart surgery using heart-lung machine. Currently, the anticoagulation management is based on offline tests. But, the real-time non-invasive blood monitoring system is highly desirable to optimize the anticoagulation therapy. As a basic study in that direction, we employed electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method to study the electrical chacteristics of bovine blood under thrombogenic condition. The resistance and reactance were measured in the frequency range of 1 kHZ to 5MHz. The measured values were then analyzed using equivalent circuit fitting. It was observed that the capacitance of the blood can be used to quantitatively measure the degree of aggregation of red blood cells in the blood undergoing thrombosis. © 2014, Japan Soc. of Med. The growth of micro, small and medium enterprises of fashion industry in Bandung is very rapidly and thus the industry has to face the growing competitiveness challenge. The implementation of ERP is considered to be a strategy to support sales growth, increase management ability, enhance marketing network and also strengthen the company competitiveness. In order to be effectively implemented to achieve the goals, the ERP modules requirements are necessary to be identified based on the business process in the micro, small and medium enterprises of fashion Industry. This research is conducted using case study method in eight micro, small and medium fashion enterprises in Bandung. As the references, the business process from Process Classification Framework from American Productivity Quality Centre (PCF-APQC) for Consumer Product, PCF-APQC for Retail, and business process from the previous research are used. While the ERP used as the benchmark is the integration of SAP Apparel and Footwear Solution and SAP Retail as one of the best available technology. The result advices that functionally, the ERP system for micro, small and medium fashion enterprises needs to include product design and development modules, product marketing and selling, procurement and production, human resources management, retail shop management, and finance and accounting modules. For fashion enterprises with different size, it tends to require different level of completeness of ERP module components. The bigger the size of the fashion enterprise, it needs more complete module components based on the main and additional business processes. Whilst, for nonfunctional demand, the micro, small and medium fashion industry desires ERP with the affordable price, having the drill down ability to display data related to production and selling based on the season/collection, able to do product categorization based on the various grouping criteria, the easily understood user interface, and also practical and

The preventive maintenance (PM) is scheduled periodically to restore the system condition. However, PM activities cannot generally restore the system to as good as new condition but in an intermediate situation, which is called imperfect PM. The PM interval optimization is useful for improving system reliability. A popular approach to optimization interval is minimizing the maintenance costs. The goal of this work is to obtain optimal PM intervals that minimize expected cost considered PM imperfect, in other words we obtain the optimal PM intervals assuming that the PM action restores the system operating state to be somewhere between as good as new and as bad as old. The results are applied in a real data and the PM is maintained at a decreasing sequence of intervals, which is more practical since most systems need more frequent maintenance with increased usage and age. Furthermore consider a wrong PM perfect hypotheses increase the maintenance cost substantially. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.
