Introduction to stress triggers, stress shadows and their implications for seismic hazard in Indonesia

Many aspects of earthquake mechanics remain an enigma, e.g.: earthquake interaction and seismic hazard mitigation. One potential bright spot is the finding that simple calculations of stress changes may explain some earthquake occurrences and interactions. This progress is especially lead by abundant studies of stress changes of human-induced seismicity. This work introduces stress triggers, stress shadows, and their implications for seismic hazard in Indonesia. We review our work on stress analysis of the 2016 Aceh earthquake and present a compilation of quantitative earthquake interaction studies from a stress change perspective. The 2016 earthquakes were deadly, caused more than 100 causalities, and unpredicted, in a sense that the driving force and the source mechanism remain unclear. No information was present on the extent of the faulting or the direction of propagation of the event. Therefore, it requires a stress transfer modeling in order to understand the possible seismic hazard distribution. The results of this study provide some clues about certain aspects of earthquake mechanics. It also demonstrates that we still have a lot of work ahead of us before we can understand the complete mechanism of how an earthquake occurs.

Silica-calcium phosphate composite (SCPC) and carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) have several superior properties as they are bioactive, bioresorbable and elicit excellent tissue response. The CO3Ap surface layer and hydrated silica developed on the surface of the SCPC may be a key factor for achieving dentin regeneration. On the other hand, calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] have antibacterial properties and biocompatible to dental tissue. Therefore, the combination of CO3Ap, SCPC, and Ca(OH)2 in a bone cement may be favorable as a pulp capping agent that enhances pulp tissue formation and dentin regeneration. The aim of the present study is to synthesize and characterize a novel SCPC-CO3Ap cement for pulp capping application in dentistry. The cement is composed of dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA), vaterite, Ca(OH)2 and SCPC. The set cement was further characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The microstructure of set cement was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the mechanical strength was evaluated by diametral tensile strength (DTS). The FT-IR analyses revealed that the additional bands of carbonate were detected in each sample. The SEM samples of set cement showing more compact surface microstructure of group II compared to other groups. Furthermore, the combination of 5% SCPC and 5% Ca(OH)2 in the cement facilitated a compact structure with superior mechanical strength. The novel SCPC-CO3Ap cement has great potential to be used for pulp capping to facilitate dentin regeneration. © 2017 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/c and 0.5–7 GeV/c, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au+Au collisions and p+p collisions, IAA and ΔAA, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Δϕ, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-pT associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

Merapi volcano located in central Java, Indonesia,is one of the most active stratovolcanoes in the world. Many Earth scientists have conducted studies on this volcano using various methods. The geological features around Merapi are very attractive to be investigated because they have been formed by a complex tectonic process and volcanic activities since tens of millions of years ago. The southern mountain range, Kendeng basin and Opak active fault located around the study area resulted from these processes. DOMERAPI project was conducted to understand deep magma sources of the Merapi volcano comprehensively. The DOMERAPI network was running from October 2013 to mid-April 2015 by deploying 46 broad-band seismometers around the volcano. Several steps, i.e., earthquake event identification,arrival time picking of P and S waves, hypocenter determination and hypocenter relocation, were carried out in this study. We used Geiger＇s method（Geiger 1912） for hypocenter determination and double-difference method for hypocenter relocation. The relocation result will be used to carry out seismic tomographic imaging of structures beneath the Merapi volcano and its surroundings. For the hypocenter determination, the DOMERAPI data were processed simultaneously with those from the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics（BMKG） seismic network in order to minimize the azimuthal gap. We found that the majority of earthquakes occurred outside the DOMERAPI network. There are 464 and 399 earthquakes obtained before and after hypocenter relocation, respectively. The hypocenter relocation result successfully detects some tectonic features, such as a nearly vertical cluster of events indicating a subduction-related backthrust to the south of central Java and a cluster of events to the east of Opak fault suggesting that the fault has an eastward dip.

Numerical modeling approach taking into account the influence of delamination for performance capacity of reinforced concrete beam strengthened in bending by CFRP

Reinforced concrete members strengthened in bending by externally bonding of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) may present several failure modes: failure of material or failure of the interface between concrete-CFRP. Nevertheless, experience gained from testing confirms that in most cases delamination prevails over the other possible rupture modes. Delamination in CFRP strengthened sections is difficult to model because it involves multiple parameters such as FRP stiffness, adhesive material properties, presence of cracks in concrete, among others. A simplified numerical model to predict flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beam strengthened by CFRP at failure is presented in this paper. The experimental validation is presented as well. Based on the result of the proposed model, an equation for the prediction of ultimate flexural capacity to prevent CFRP debonding is proposed.

Probabilistic approach of resource assessment in Kerinci geothermal field using numerical simulation coupling with monte carlo simulation

The Kerinci geothermal field is one phase liquid reservoir system in the Kerinci District, western part of Jambi Province. In this field, there are geothermal prospects that identified by the heat source up flow inside a National Park area. Kerinci field was planned to develop 1×55 MWe by Pertamina Geothermal Energy. To define reservoir characterization, the numerical simulation of Kerinci field is developed by using TOUGH2 software with information from conceptual model. The pressure and temperature profile well data of KRC-B1 are validated with simulation data to reach natural state condition. The result of the validation is suitable matching. Based on natural state simulation, the resource assessment of Kerinci geothermal field is estimated by using Monte Carlo simulation with the result P10-P50-P90 are 49.4 MW, 64.3 MW and 82.4 MW respectively. This paper is the first study of resource assessment that has been estimated successfully in Kerinci Geothermal Field using numerical simulation coupling with Monte carlo simulation.

Compact localized states and flat-band generators in one dimension

Flat bands (FB) are strictly dispersionless bands in the Bloch spectrum of a periodic lattice Hamiltonian, recently observed in a variety of photonic and dissipative condensate networks. FB Hamiltonians are fine-tuned networks, still lacking a comprehensive generating principle. We introduce a FB generator based on local network properties. We classify FB networks through the properties of compact localized states (CLS) which are exact FB eigenstates and occupy U unit cells. We obtain the complete two-parameter FB family of two-band d=1 networks with nearest unit cell interaction and U=2. We discover a novel high symmetry sawtooth chain with identical hoppings in a transverse dc field, easily accessible in experiments. Our results pave the way towards a complete description of FBs in networks with more bands and in higher dimensions.

Amino acid composition and protein quality of instant liquid food based on Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Kelor (Moringa oleifera) flour

Under-five children are a vulnerable group whose susceptible to repeated infections and deficiency of protein and calcium. The objective of this research is to analyze the amino acid composition and protein quality of instant liquid food based on catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and kelor (Moringa oleifera) flour according to the requirement of children 1-3 years old. The amino acid composition was analyzed by using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC). The highest essential amino acid content in the instant liquid food based on catfish and kelor flour is the 114.29±0.79 mg/g protein lysine and the highest non-essential amino acid is the glutamic acid of 244.14±1.86 mg/g protein. The protein quality was determined by the chemical score (78.30 for sulphuric amino acid), the amino acid score (100), the essential amino acid index (EAAI = 0.98), the predicted protein efficiency ratio (P-PER = 4.63±0.02), and the predicted biological value (P-BV = 48.51±0.13).The study showed that instant liquid food based catfish and kelor flour containing high-quality protein and calcium that is recommended for children aged 1-3 years.

Smart geo-energy village development by using cascade direct use of geothermal energy in Bonjol, West Sumatera

West Sumatera is a province which has a huge geothermal potential - approximately 6% of Indonesia's total geothermal potential which equals to 1,656 MWe. One of the significant reserves located in Bonjol subdistrict which accounts for more than 50 MWe. The energy from geothermal manifestation in Bonjol can be utilized prior to indirect development. Manifestation at the rate 3 kg/s and 87 °C will flow to cascading system consisting several applications, arranged in order from high to low temperature to efficiently use the excessive energy. The direct use application selected is based on the best potential commodities as well as temperature constraint of heat source. The objective of this paper is to perform a conceptual design for the first cascade direct use of geothermal energy in Indonesia to establish Bonjol Smart Geo-Energy Village which will be transformed as the center of agricultural, stockbreeding, tourism as well as cultural site. A comprehenssive research was performed through remote survey area, evaluation featured product, analysis of heat loss and heat exchange in cascade system. From potential commodities, the three applications selected are cocoa drying and egg hatching incubation machine as well as new tourism site called Terapi Panas Bumi. The optimum temperature for cocoa drying is 62°C with the moisture content 7% which consumes 78 kW for one tones cocoa dried. Whereas, egg incubation system consists of two chamber with the same temperature 40°C for each room and relative humidity 55% and 70%. For the last stage, Terapi Panas Bumi works in temperature 40°C. Based on the result technical and economical aspect, it exhibits cascade direct use of geothermal energy is very recommended to develop.

Influences of Precursor Solution Concentration and Temperature on CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Layer Morphology and the Unconverted PbI2 Proportion to their Perovskite Solar Cell Characteristics

The formation of organometal-halide perovskite crystal is simply based on stoichiometry reaction. However, the formation process seems to be sensitively affected by some process parameters such as concentration and temperature of precursor solution. In this work, we studied the formation of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) crystal in mesoporous TiO2 layer deposited by spin coating technique. Perovskite layers were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and its surface morphology were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Perovskite layers obtained from precursor solution at 40°C and 60°C show a mesh-like structure. Meanwhile, for higher precursor solution temperature (80°C), it shows a flake-like structure. However, precursor solution at 60°C produced the best conversion of precursor solution with the smallest percentage of the remaining unconverted PbI2 inside the produced crystal layer. These experimental results also showed that the best crystallization degree is obtained from 1.0 M precursor solution. The photovoltaic characteristics of their solar cells seem to have a correlation with the quantity of unconverted PbI2. High PbI2 content significantly decreased the Filling Factor of the solar cell.
