Statistical Analysis of Mercury Data from Soil Survey in Non-volcanic Geothermal System: A Case study in Sulawesi

Mercury analysis from soil survey is one of the standard methods in geothermal exploration surveys conducted by Center for Survey and Geological Data or PSDG (formerly DIM). The objective of this paper is to analyze thresholds of four non volcanic geothermal systems in Sulawesi, i.e. Suwawa, Marana, Pincara and Mangolo. The value of Hg (ppb) is differ from one prospect to another. Its value ranges from tens ppb up to few thou sands ppb, depends on the geology and geothermal system; in high temperature volcanic geothermal system, or in non-volcanic geothermal system. Therefore determination of threshold that separate background and anomaly is important for better delineation of Hg anomaly area. Prior to threshold determination, a probability plot is used to examine the normality and the existence of sub population within the data. Sub population located at the end left of probability graph or sub population with the lowest range value is assumed containing the background and threshold information. The threshold is then calculated using mean plus one standard deviation of data within this sub population. Comparison of the calculated number with the published threshold value shows very significant difference in term of anomaly area coverage for further exploration target. This paper demonstrates Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) techniques that can be applied as a tool to determine threshold value. The results suggest that this statistical methodis able to assist and support a better threshold value determination.

Space time models such as the Generalized Space Time Autoregressive (GSTAR) is an important theoretical research topics with many applications in large number of areas ranging from the spread of diseases, mining, economic growth, ecology, agriculture and population development. In this paper we introduce a clustering spatial for determining a group of locations for weight matrix of the GSTAR model. We use Ordinary Least Squares method to estimate the parameters of model and apply the result to develop a GSTAR-Kriging model for replacement new oil wells at volcanic field in Jatibarang, West Java-Indonesia.

Platelet transfusions are widely used for patients with severe thrombocytopenia. There are, however, practical problems in the current donor-dependent platelet transfusions, such as the limited supply and risk of serious immune reactions. Thus, the development of new strategies for generating platelets for transfusion is crucial. Platelets have been differentiated from hematopoietic stem cells, fetal liver cells, embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, NF-E2-transduced fibroblasts, and preadipocytes. Here, among these cells preadipocytes, especially in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, could be ideal candidate cells for manufacturing megakaryocytes (MKs) and platelets, because (1) they are relatively easy to obtain large quantities and have ability to proliferate in vitro, (2) their differentiation does not require gene transfer, as they possess genes in relation to megakaryopoiesis and thrombopoiesis, such as p45NF-E2 and c-mpl, and (3) they differentiate into MKs and platelets using an endogenous thrombopoietin. Thus, to clarify the usefulness of preadipocytes as a donor-independent source for platelet transfusion, we compared both number and function between platelets derived from mouse subcutaneous preadipocytes and those from bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs), the established cell source for manufacturing platelets. First, BMMNCs were not feasible for their expansion in vitro and therefore the cells were directly seeded in MK lineage induction media. In contrast, preadipocytes were to be passaged 6 times without any morphological changes, and then cultured in MK lineage induction media for their differentiation into platelets. Thus, as assessed by CD41-positive platelet-sized cells, 106.2±5.0 ×105 or 3.9±1.0 ×105 platelets were obtained from 106 preadipocytes or 106 BMMNCs, respectively (p<0.01). Determination of earthquake hypocenter in Indonesia conducted by the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (MCGA) has still used a 1-D seismic velocity model. In this research, we have applied a Fast Grid Search (FGM) method and a 3-D velocity model resulting from tomographic imaging to relocate earthquakes in the Sumatran region. The data were taken from the MCGA data catalog from 2009 to 2011 comprising of subduction zone and on land fault earthquakes with magnitude greater than 4 Mw. Our preliminary results show some significant changes in the depths of the relocated earthquakes which are in general deeper than the depths of hypocenters from the MCGA data catalog. The residual times resulting from the relocation process are smaller than those prior to the relocation. Encouraged by these results, we will continue to conduct hypocenter relocation for all events from the MCGA data catalog periodically in order to produce a new data catalog with good quality. We hope that the new data catalog will be useful for further studies.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

The realization of local earthquake tomography is usually conducted by removing distant events outside the study region, because these events may increase errors. In this study, tomographic inversion has been conducted using the travel time data of local and regional events in order to improve the structural resolution, especially for deep structures. We used the local MERapi Amphibious EXperiments (MERAMEX) data catalog that consists of 292 events from May to October 2004. The additional new data of regional events in the Java region were taken from the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (MCGA) of Indonesia, which consist of 882 events, having at least 10 recording phases at each seismographic station from April 2009 to February 2011. We have conducted joint inversions of the combined data sets using double-difference tomography to invert for velocity structures and to conduct hypocenter relocation simultaneously. The checkerboard test results of Vp and Vs structures demonstrate a significantly improved spatial resolution from the shallow crust down to a depth of 165 km. Our tomographic inversions reveal a low velocity anomaly beneath the Lawu - Merapi zone, which is consistent with the results from previous studies. A strong velocity anomaly zone with low Vp, low Vs and low Vp/Vs is also identified between Cilacap and Banyumas. We interpret this anomaly as a fluid content material with large aspect ratio or sediment layer. This anomaly zone is in a good agreement with the existence of a large dome containing sediment in this area as proposed by previous geological studies. A low velocity anomaly zone is also detected in Kebumen, where it may be related to the extensional oceanic basin toward the land.

Marginalized urban migrants thrive in informal economy, where health and safety are often neglected. Findings on previous studies have listed several informal characteristics; occupational injuries and diseases in informal setting; and components of health expenditure. This paper attempts to assess health-associated cost in informal industry through questionnaire containing basic information of respondent and household members, economic and occupational assessment. Different types of jobs surveyed, target population, biases from occupational/non-occupational cost and household/individual expenditure, and validation method are challenges that must be addressed. This paper serves as policy-tool reference to improve the well-being of informal workers by improving nationwide workforce survey.

Dynamometer is an automotive device that is used to perform engine testing. From this test, engine information such as power, torque, and emition can be obtained for design and analysis purposes. Eddy brakes dynamometer is considered because it is considerably more effective and controllable. In order to design a brakes control system based on state space approach, a state space model is required. ADALINE (Adaptive Linear Network) method is selected to identify state space model of the system from input-output data. The state space based PID controller is then applied by selecting the appropriate parameters using Ackerman pole placement method. Simulation and experimental results show that the closed loop responses satisfiy the design requirements.

Analysis of Fluconazole in Human Urine Sample by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Method

A method for determination of fluconazole, antifungal drug in human urine by using reversed-phased high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detector was developed. Optimization HPLC conditions were carried out by changing the flow rate and composition of mobile phase. The optimum separation conditions at a flow rate 0.85 mL/min with a composition of mobile phase containing methanol:water (70:30, v/v) with UV detection at a wavelength 254 nm was able to analyze fluconazole within 3 min. The excellent linearity was obtained in the range of concentration 1 to 10 μg/mL with r2 = 0.998. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.39 μg/mL and 1.28 μg/mL, respectively. Solid phase extraction (SPE) method using octadecylsilane (C18) as a sorbent was used to clean-up and pre-concentrated of the urine sample prior to HPLC analysis. The average recoveries of fluconazole in spiked urine sample was 72.4% with RSD of 3.21% (n=3).

Knowledge Management System (KMS) is one way to organize and documented the knowledge of institution. The purpose of this study is to develop a prototype KMS in organizing and documenting the knowledge in the university and to do a document aggregation based on the total number, subjects and writers (lecturers). The development method of KMS prototype is using sharepoints which are able to collect, store and publish all digital data available at the university which can be accessed online. Aggregation is using the percentage between the number of documents, subjects, and writers (lecturers). The aggregation's result between the number of digital files compared to the number of courses and the number of lecturers are each below 10%. In the future, the university still needs to encourage all lecturers or academic community to increase the collection of digital files that can indirectly improve the quality and educational services. © 2012 International Journal of Computer Science Issues.
