A search is presented for baryon number violating interactions in top quark production and decay. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and exactly one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the strength of baryon number violating couplings. For the first time the production of single top quarks via baryon number violating interactions is studied. This allows the search to set the most stringent constraints to date on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to a lepton, an up-type quark (u or c), and a down-type quark (d, s, or b). The results improve the previous bounds by 3 to 6 orders of magnitude based on the fermion flavor combination of the baryon number violating interactions.

The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large ’t Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics. With no observed excess of events over the standard model expectation, limits are set on the cross section for production via gluon fusion of a scalar mediator with SUEP-like decays.

The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section σtt¯ and its ratio to the Z-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13.6 TeV, using 29 fb−1 of data collected in ...

The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section σ_tt¯ and its ratio to the Z-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13.6 TeV, using 29 fb⁻¹ of data collected in 2022 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Using events with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair and b-tagged jets, and assuming Standard Model decays, the top-quark-pair production cross section is measured to be σ_tt¯=850±3(stat.)±18(syst.)±20(lumi.) pb. The ratio of the tt¯ and the Z-boson production cross sections is also measured, where the Z-boson contribution is determined for inclusive e⁺e⁻ and μ⁺μ⁻ events in a fiducial phase space. The relative uncertainty on the ratio is reduced compared to the tt¯ cross section, thanks to the cancellation of several systematic uncertainties. The result for the ratio, R_tt¯/Z=1.145±0.003(stat.)±0.021(syst.)±0.002(lumi.) is consistent with the Standard Model prediction using the PDF4LHC21 PDF set. © 2023 The Author(s)

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a τ-lepton and a neutrino using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV is presented. The full run 2 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015–2018 is analyzed. The τ-lepton is reconstructed in its hadronic decay modes and the total transverse momentum carried out by neutrinos is inferred from the reconstructed missing transverse momentum. The search for new physics is performed on the transverse mass between the τ-lepton and the missing transverse momentum. No excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper exclusion limits are set on the W′→τν production cross section. Heavy W′ vector bosons with masses up to 5.0 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming that they have the same couplings as the Standard Model W boson. For nonuniversal couplings, W′ bosons are excluded for masses less than 3.5–5.0 TeV, depending on the model parameters. In addition, model-independent limits on the visible cross section times branching ratio are determined as a function of the lower threshold on the transverse mass of the τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum.

The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140 fb−1 for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal yield is 2.2±0.7 times the standard model prediction, and agrees with the theoretical expectation within 1.9 standard deviations.

The inclusive Higgs boson production cross-section is measured in the di-photon and the $$ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell $$ decay channels using 31.4 and 29.0 fb $$^{-1}$$ of pp collision data respectively, collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ $$\text {TeV}$$ . To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel’s detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. These measured fiducial cross-sections are $$\sigma _{\textrm{fid},\gamma \gamma } = $$ $$76^{+14}_{-13}$$ fb, and $$\sigma _{\textrm{fid},4 \ell } =$$ $$2.80\, \pm \, 0.74$$ fb, in agreement with the corresponding Standard Model predictions of $$67.6 \pm 3.7 $$ fb and $$3.67 \pm 0.19 $$ fb. Assuming Standard Model acceptances and branching fractions for the two channels, the fiducial measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space yielding total cross-sections of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H) = 67^{+12}_{-11}$$ pb and $$46 \pm 12$$ pb at 13.6 $$\text {TeV}$$ from the di-photon and $$ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell $$ measurements respectively. The two measurements are combined into a total cross-section measurement of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)= 58.2 \pm 8.7$$ pb, to be compared with the Standard Model prediction of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)_\textrm{SM} = 59.9 \pm 2.6 $$ pb.

The ratio of branching ratios of the W boson to muons and electrons, $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W={{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow \mu \nu )}$$ / $${{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow e\nu )}$$ , has been measured using $$140\,\text{ fb}^{-1}\,$$ of pp collision data at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ $$\text {T}\text {e}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, probing the universality of lepton couplings. The ratio is obtained from measurements of the $$t\bar{t}$$ production cross-section in the ee, $$e\mu $$ and $$\mu \mu $$ dilepton final states. To reduce systematic uncertainties, it is normalised by the square root of the corresponding ratio $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ for the Z boson measured in inclusive $$Z\rightarrow ee$$ and $$Z\rightarrow \mu \mu $$ events. By using the precise value of $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ determined from $$e^+e^-$$ colliders, the ratio $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W$$ is determined to be $$\begin{aligned} R^{\,\mu /e}_W&= 0.9995\pm 0.0022\,\mathrm {(stat)}\,\pm 0.0036\,\mathrm {(syst)}\\ &\quad \pm 0.0014\,\mathrm {(ext)} . \end{aligned}$$ The three uncertainties correspond to data statistics, experimental systematics and the external measurement of $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ , giving a total uncertainty of 0.0045, and confirming the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays at the 0.5% level.

A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $$te^- \bar{t}e^+$$ or $$t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$$ in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into $$te^{-}$$ ( $$t\mu ^{-}$$ ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass $$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass $$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

Measurements of the differential production cross-sections of prompt and non-prompt $$J/\psi $$ and $$\psi (2{\textrm{S}})$$ mesons with transverse momenta between 8 and 360 GeV and rapidity in the range $$|y|<2$$ are reported. Furthermore, measurements of the non-prompt fractions of $$J/\psi $$ and $$\psi (2{\textrm{S}})$$ , and the prompt and non-prompt $$\psi (2{\textrm{S}})$$ -to- $$J/\psi $$ production ratios, are presented. The analysis is performed using 140 fb $$^{-1}$$ of $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the years 2015–2018.
