This paper describes searches for the pair production of first or second generation scalar leptoquarks using 35 pb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at s=7 TeV. Leptoquarks are searched in events with two oppositely-charged muons or electrons and at least two jets, and in events with one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. After event selection, the observed yields are consistent with the predicted backgrounds. Leptoquark production is excluded at the 95% CL for masses MLQ<376 (319) GeV and MLQ<422 (362) GeV for first and second generation scalar leptoquarks, respectively, when assuming the branching fraction of a leptoquark to a charged lepton is equal to 1.0 (0.5).

Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data.

A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880 nb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm was introduced for exposing business processes as services and enabling their interaction and composition over the Internet. The same computing model can potentially be extended to services of personal devices. As personal devices become network-aware their services can be made available (by their owners) to members of trusted peer groups, thus allowing them to compose new distributed collaborative applications. However, dealing with firewall traversals, NATs, mobility and issues of service-level naming and addressing stand in the way of this vision. In this paper we introduce a P2P SOA middleware architecture that addresses such problems of pervasive connectivity without requiring any intermediaries or changes to the service implementations. The third international conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI-2008) was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, March 12-15, 2008. The theme of HRI-2008, "living with robots," highlights the importance of the technical and social issues underlying human-robot interaction with companion and assistive robots for long-term use in everyday life and work activities. More than 250 researchers, practitioners, and exhibitors attended the conference, and many more contributed to the conference as authors or reviewers. By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first observation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.

This paper describes annotations for the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese. The information we annotated to the corpus includes morphemes, clause units, dependency structures, summaries, and discourse structures. They are integrated in the form of XML. Morphological information was semi-automatically annotated to the transcribed text by reducing the human labor cost within the framework of morphological annotation that we proposed. Next, clause unites were detected based on the morphological information as basic units for our annotation. Then, dependency structures, summaries, discourse structures were annotated based on the clause units.

In this work we present a comparative study, testing selected methods for clustering and classification of holter electrocardiogram (ECG). More specifically we focus on the task of discriminating between normal 'N' beats and premature ventricular 'V' beats. Some of the tested methods represent the state of the art in pattern analysis, while others are novel algorithms developed by us. All the algorithms were tested on the same datasets, namely the MIT-BIH and the AHA databases. The results for all the employed methods are compared and evaluated using the measures of sensitivity and specificity.

Image registration is critical for making diagnostic decision and essential for image-guided surgery. To improve the quality and accuracy of healthcare, efficient registration is highly demanded. However, because of the non-rigid deformations caused by heartbeat and breath, abdominal image registration remains a challenging task. To address these issues, an automatic and elastic registration for abdominal images is proposed. The algorithm is divided into three steps: efficient non-iterative affine registration;elastic motion field extraction based on active contours;elastic registration based on motion field. The validation of the method on monomodality and multimodality abdominal images has demonstrated that the algorithm is reliable and efficient. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.
