National Institute of Information and Communications Technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.

Image registration is critical for making diagnostic decision and essential for image-guided surgery. To improve the quality and accuracy of healthcare, efficient registration is highly demanded. However, because of the non-rigid deformations caused by heartbeat and breath, abdominal image registration remains a challenging task. To address these issues, an automatic and elastic registration for abdominal images is proposed. The algorithm is divided into three steps: efficient non-iterative affine registration; elastic motion field extraction based on active contours; elastic registration based on motion field. The validation of the method on monomodality and multimodality abdominal images has demonstrated that the algorithm is reliable and efficient.

Dynamically Reconfigurable Systems (DRS) offer a very interesting alternative for embedded digital systems design. Tasks scheduling within a reconfigurable environment allows the development of systems with better execution performance, chip area economy and lower power consumption. This paper describes a Petri Net based methodology for the design of dynamically reconfigurable systems, where tasks scheduling has as prime objective the best temporal performance of the overall application. The methodology includes the generation of an embedded controller supporting the scheduling process in the target architecture.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. The UML Testing Profile provides support for UML based model-driven testing. This paper introduces a methodology of how to use the testing profile in order to modify and extend an existing UML design model for test issues. As a case study, a new roaming algorithm for bluetooth devices has been developed at the University of Lübeck, is modelled using UML. The usability of the UML Testing Profile will be explained by applying it to this model. © IFIP 2004.

Path prediction is currently being considered for use in the context of mobile and wireless computing toward more efficient network resource management schemes. Path prediction allows the network and services to further enhance the quality of service levels the user enjoys. Such mechanisms are mostly meaningful in infrastructures like wireless LANs. In this article we present a path prediction algorithm that exploits the machine learning algorithm of learning automata. The decision of the learning automaton is driven by the movement patterns of a single user but is also affected by the aggregated patterns demonstrated by all users. Simulations of the algorithm, performed using the Realistic Mobility Pattern Generator, show increased prediction accuracy.
