Behavior Trees and State Machines in Robotics Applications

Autonomous robots combine skills to form increasingly complex behaviors, called missions. While skills are often programmed at a relatively low abstraction level, their coordination is architecturally separated and often expressed in higher-level languages or frameworks. State machines have been the go-to language to model behavior for decades, but recently, behavior trees have gained attention among roboticists. Originally designed to model autonomous actors in computer games, behavior trees offer an extensible tree-based representation of missions and are claimed to support modular design and code reuse. Although several implementations of behavior trees are in use, little is known about their usage and scope in the real world. How do concepts offered by behavior trees relate to traditional languages, such as state machines? How are concepts in behavior trees and state machines used in actual applications? This paper is a study of the key language concepts in behavior trees as realized in domain-specific languages (DSLs), internal and external DSLs offered as libraries, and their use in open-source robotic applications supported by the Robot Operating System (ROS). We analyze behavior-tree DSLs and compare them to the standard language for behavior models in robotics: state machines. We identify DSLs for both behavior-modeling languages, and we analyze five in-depth. We mine open-source repositories for robotic applications that use the analyzed DSLs and analyze their usage. We identify similarities between behavior trees and state machines in terms of language design and the concepts offered to accommodate the needs of the robotics domain. We observed that the usage of behavior-tree DSLs in open-source projects is increasing rapidly. We observed similar usage patterns at model structure and at code reuse in the behavior-tree and state-machine models within the mined open-source projects. The design and construction of delivering announcements using a web-based SMS gateway aims to help overcome problems that often occur at pioneer airports;this is because when passengers want to travel, many passengers still arrive late to check-in, even though the passenger ticket has a notification for checking. -in 1 hour before Departure. If a flight's Departure is delayed or accelerated, passengers will only receive this information when they arrive at the airport, whereas if at the time the departure notification is delayed or accelerated, the passenger is still outside the airport or still on their way to the airport, as a result, they will definitely not receive the information. Testing voice announcements on parking, arrival, departure, delay, check-in, and waiting room services, as well as testing SMS broadcasts (30 user numbers and one airline), shows that the announcement application provides information through voice data recording and broadcasts SMS to passengers and families. Testing was carried out at Indonesian Pioner airport for 30 passengers for a week. The percentage of Ease of obtaining test voice information was 81.98%, and the percentage of Ease of obtaining broadcast SMS information was 83.1%. Implementing the announcement is feasible at pioneer airports with a percentage of 82.54%. © 2024 IEEE.

Despite recent successes in semi-supervised learning for natural image segmentation, applying these methods to medical images presents challenges in obtaining discriminative representations from limited annotations. While contrastive learning frameworks excel in similarity measures for classification, their transferability to precise pixel-level segmentation in medical images is hindered, particularly when confronted with inherent prediction uncertainty. To overcome this issue, our approach incorporates two subnetworks to rectify erroneous predictions. The first network identifies uncertain predictions, generating an uncertainty attention map. The second network employs an uncertainty-aware descriptor to refine the representation of uncertain regions, enhancing the accuracy of predictions. Additionally, to adaptively recalibrate the representation of uncertain candidates, we define class prototypes based on reliable predictions. We then aim to minimize the discrepancy between class prototypes and uncertain predictions through a deep contrastive learning strategy. Our experimental results on organ segmentation from clinical MRI and CT scans demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to state-of-the-art methods. In this article, we consider the case in which a swarm of robots collaborates in a mission, where a few of the robots behave maliciously. These malicious Byzantine robots may be temporally or constantly controlled by an adversary. The scope is synchronized full information robot operations, where a robot that does not follow the program/policy of the swarm is immediately identified and can be remembered as Byzantine. As robots may be suspected of being Byzantine due to benign temporal malfunctions, it is imperative to forgive and forget, otherwise, a robot cannot assume collaborative actions with any other robot in the swarm. Still, remembering for a while may facilitate a policy of surrounding, isolating and freezing the movement of the misbehaving robots, by several robots, allowing the rest to perform the swarm task with no intervention. We demonstrate the need to periodically forgive and forget to realize swarm several tasks including patrolling/cleaning in the presence of possible Byzantine robots. The policy for achieving the task consists of blocking the movement of the Byzantine robot(s) by some of the robots, while the rest patrol/clean the plane. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Banking produces extensive and diverse data, so a clustering process is needed to understand customer behavior patterns and transactions more effectively. This clustering has been widely utilized with the K-Means algorithm due to its simplicity and efficiency. However, this algorithm is limited in determining the optimal cluster center, affecting the accuracy of the clustering results. This study proposes applying two metaheuristic algorithms, Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), as additional solutions combined with K-Means. These two algorithms were chosen because of their ability to find global solutions and convergence speed to handle large and complex banking data. The results show the superiority of IWOKM compared to PSOKM in terms of SSE and DBI. From the SSE value, IWOKM produces a lower value (3029.77), which indicates that this method is better at minimizing clustering errors and producing more accurate clustering than PSOKM (80007.09). From the DBI value, IWOKM also produces a better value (1.6684) than PSOKM (1.6782), which shows that the clusters produced by IWOKM are more compact and more separated. However, in terms of computation time, PSOKM is more efficient, with a faster average computation time. Although IWOKM produces better clustering quality, PSOKM offers advantages in terms of processing speed. This finding confirms that the selection of the IWO algorithm is more appropriate for use on datasets with characteristics such as the German Credit Dataset. © 2024 IEEE.

Wideband millimeter-wave (mm-wave) coverage is essential for the high-speed, low-latency communication required in next-generation 5G New Radio (NR) Internet of Things (IoT) systems. This study develops a T-shaped four-element, highly compact wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna covering the mm-wave n260 (37.40 GHz) and n259 (42.43.5 GHz) bands for 5G NR IoT applications. The antenna is designed on a 0.76 mm-thick Rogers RO4350B substrate with overall dimensions of 28 28 mm2 (3.3 × 3.3 λ2). For design simplicity, a T-shaped patch backed by a full-ground plane is devised to serve as the radiator of a single-element antenna with the dimensions of (Ls × Ws) mm2, optimized through a systematic three-step design process for improved performance. Moreover, the design has evolved into a 4× 4 orthogonal MIMO configuration, achieving improved gain, polarization diversity, and higher data rates, with each element exhibiting wideband characteristics across 11.5 GHz (36.5 to 48 GHz) with high gains of 9.8 dBi and 6.6 dBi at n260 and n259 5G mm-wave bands, respectively. Additionally, arc-shaped complementary split-ring resonators (CSRR) are integrated into the ground plane to significantly enhance the gain while effectively reducing mutual coupling, remarkably achieving a maximum gain of 9.8 dBi. Furthermore, the MIMO antenna exhibits an envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.10 between any two MIMO elements encountering the required condition of © 2014 IEEE.

The aim of this work is to develop numerical procedures for analyzing edge hardening using induction heating by turbulent currents. The section through the steel bar, whose lower edge needs to be hardened, is presented. For the inductor adapted to the piece configuration, the 2D model is assumed. The surface treatment of the piece must be differentiated: in the tip area, the heating must be greater than in the rest of the surface. Only the tip area needs to be subjected to hardening, while the rest of the piece must remain elastic to ensure the desired mechanical strength. The main purpose of this work is to propose inductor models for achieving differentiated heating of the blade. © 2023 IEEE.

Wifi signal optimization is done through antenna modification. This research describes the design and characterization of a waveguide antenna with slots arranged based on SIW. The antenna is designed to work at a frequency of2.4 GHz in accordance with the Wi-Fi frequency. The antenna design uses a 1.6 mm thick FR-4 Epoxy dielectric substrate material with a relative permittivity of 4.25. The antenna has dimensions of 203.7 mm $\times$ 37.5 mm with 4 identical rectangular slots arranged crosswise with a distance between the center points of adjacent slots of 37.3 mm. The rectangular slots have dimensions of 24 mm $\times$ 6 mm. This antenna consists of 3 patch parts put together, namely a rectangular patch, a connector patch, and a trapezium patch. The connector patch is rectangular with dimensions of 2.4 mm $\times$ 16 mm and the trapezium patch has a base side width of 37 mm and a height of 36 mm. Via is mounted on the periphery of a rectangular antenna with a diameter of 1 mm. The realization results show that the antenna still functions at a frequency of 2.4 GHz with a reflection coefficient of-11.72 dB and a bandwidth of1.67%. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper develops a new meta-heuristic algorithm, called Membrane Algorithm based on Quasi-Affine TRansformation Evolution (MA-QUATRE). The proposed algorithm combines the principles of QUATRE, the one-level membrane structure, and the rules of membrane systems. The different operations of QUATRE are for each inner elementary membrane and outer skin membrane, and the transformation/communication is like rules in membrane systems. For the effectiveness of MA-QUATRE, it is first evaluated on the CEC2022 benchmark and compared with five QUATRE-related algorithms. Further, the proposed algorithm is used to solve two engineering design problems (tension/compression spring and pressure vessel design) and compared with the original QUATRE and six state-of-the-art algorithms. Finally, experimental results show that the proposed MA-QUATRE is a competitive algorithm for optimization problems.
