Divide-and-train: A new approach to improve the predictive tasks of bike-sharing systems

Bike-sharing systems (BSSs) have become commonplace in most cities worldwide as an important part of many smart cities. These systems generate a continuous amount of large data volumes. The effectiveness of these BSS systems depends on making decisions at the proper time. Thus, there is a vital need to build predictive models on the BSS data for the sake of improving the process of decision-making. The overwhelming majority of BSS users register before utilizing the service. Thus, several BSSs have prior knowledge of the user’s data, such as age, gender, and other relevant details. Several machine learning and deep learning models, for instance, are used to predict urban flows, trip duration, and other factors. The standard practice for these models is to train on the entire dataset to build a predictive model, whereas the biking patterns of various users are intuitively distinct. For instance, the user’s age influences the duration of a trip. This endeavor was motivated by the existence of distinct user patterns. In this work, we proposed divide-and-train, a new method for training predictive models on station-based BSS datasets by dividing the original datasets on the values of a given dataset attribute. Then, the proposed method was validated on different machine learning and deep learning models. All employed models were trained on both the complete and split datasets. The enhancements made to the evaluation metric were then reported. Results demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed the conventional training approach. Specifically, the root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) metrics have shown improvements in both trip duration and distance prediction, with an average accuracy of 85% across the divided sub-datasets for the best performing model, i.e., random forest. © 2024 the Author(s).

Several regional head elections had to be postponed due to the pandemic, including in Indonesia because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several big cities in Indonesia are of concern because of their large population and GDP. This study conducts analysis and testing of datasets taken from Open Data in a city in Indonesia. In addition to conducting research on regional head elections, we also present information on voters from the category of kids with disabilities. The steps used in this research are using regional mapping data of the city of Surabaya in the Election of the Regional Head. Download the data or dataset for the Regional Head Election ampersand Categories of kids with disabilities. Based on the dataset voters from the category of children with disabilities are more than 5 *** this research, we use Python to process our datasets & Big Data technology. Data cleaning or cleansing, Exploratory Data Analysis, and Empirical Cumulative Distribution Functions (ECDF) in python are also needed. Result from ECDF chart with steady increase (increment of 0.1). The highest variance value is in Electoral District 5 = 6.090 and the lowest value is in Electoral District 4 = 0.90. The result of Open Data is graphical data visualization and candidate scores to help as an alternative for the 2024 Regional Head Election and the Category of kids with disabilities. © 2023 IEEE.

Cross-platform mobile application development frameworks are now widely used among software companies and developers. Despite their time and cost-effectiveness, they still lack the performance and experience of natively developed applications. Many research tools have been proposed to solve this problem by converting a natively developed application from one platform to another. The Trans-Compiler Based Android to iOS Converter (TCAIOSC) was proposed to convert the front-end and back-end code of Android Java applications to iOS applications. Since databases are essential for mobile applications, this paper proposes a new database code conversion model based on trans-compilation and pattern matching. It proposes a model that can be used to support database code conversion between native languages and platforms and applies the proposed model to support the conversion of Firebase Firestore database code from Android (Java) to iOS (Swift) using TCAIOSC. The enhanced tool’s results show high accuracy for the converted database code and a noticeable improvement in the overall conversion results for TCAIOSC. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is becoming one of the most frequent degenerative and irreversible diseases in elderly people. Its early detection and diagnosis is also a difficult and time-intensive task. The recent advances in Machine Learning (ML) and Computer Vision (CV) created new paths to automatically detect KOA in the early stages. Detecting and grading the severity of KOA requires a dedicated ML model. This paper proposes a Side-by-Side Additive Network (SSANet)-based model for detecting and grading the severity of KOA. Since KOA affects the knee joint space by narrowing the gap between the joints, we preprocess the X-ray images to detect the Region of Interest (ROI) before the training of the model. From experimental results, it is evidenced that the ROI selection is really improving the detection accuracy of the model. Unlike sequentially connected convolution layer-based deep learning models, the proposed SSANet is based on a parallel convolution layer to reduce the degradation of feature quality. Again, to enhance the edge feature maps, we apply an additive layer that couples the previous layers’ convolutional output. SSANet captures both high-level and low-level features to predict the KOA severity effectively. The presence of a smaller number of layers and fewer numbers of learnable parameters than the existing popular deep learning models, make SSANet a time and space-efficient network. Moreover, the performance of the proposed SSANet in detecting KOA severity is significantly superior to that of other popular state-of-the-art networks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Subsea pipeline is prone to the damage due to fishing activities. Bottom trawling is one of the threats to the pipeline integrity. Fishermen used bottom trawling method to catch large volume of fish and benthic along the trawl route on the seabed. This causes the trawl net to be stuck on the subsea pipeline if their activity is close to the oil and gas platform. This paper evaluates the risk of subsea pipeline fish trawling operations on the east coast of offshore Peninsular Malaysia. On-site surveys were used to establish the characteristics of trawling devices used by local trawlers in the region. Based on site survey that was conducted, the frequency of fish trawlers crossing the pipelines is estimated. The pull-over load estimate for the otter board was determined using the Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd (DNVGL) algorithm. The severity and frequency index of the risk matrix was developed based on literature review. The findings showed that the pull-over load of otter board would not damage the pipelines. The risk presented to the pipelines by the operations of fish is considered low and moderate. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is a form of cancer that affects the female reproductive system. Women over the age of 50 are more likely to get uterine cancer. At this current time, there are two methods that the physician or health care provider tends to use to diagnose cancer, which are ultrasound technique and endometrial biopsy. If the patient is suspected of having cancer, ultrasound is first used to measure the length of the endometrial lining. Then, if the lining is greater than 4mm, an endometrial biopsy is performed. At this stage, small tubular instruments are used to extract the cells from the human body. The cells are then sent to a pathologist to determine the cell type. Using the pathological image analysis system, time is taken, where human factors are the main issues in using the system. In cancer treatment, both aspects of time and human error are important because both issues can lead to death. Also, the cell nucleus is key since the damaged cells do not tend to produce the circular cell nucleus. Therefore, the pathologist usually requires more time to identify whether it is a Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL) or a High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (HSIL). Based on the limitations that occur, the paper aims to automate classification techniques based on the nucleus roundness value. Image processing via machine learning is an alternative method that can provide high accuracy with a short processing time. The system used multiple image algorithms to determine the circularity of the cell nucleus and provide additional data to determine the cell type. Based on calculations, detection accuracy was achieved up to 100%. © 2022 IEEE.

The pandemic has brought many negative impacts on human life. One of the negative impacts is economic downturn of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) actors in Bangka Belitung Province. To solve this problem, a website-based marketplace platform called Yobagi was created. As we know, a new software product must have a good user experience. By having a good user experience means that the product has met the needs of its users. For this reason, an evaluation of the user experience is necessary. This study aims to measure the user experience of using Yobagi. The evaluation uses the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) tool, which consists of six scales: Attractiveness, Efficiency, Perspicuity, Dependability, Stimulation, and Novelty. There were 40 respondents who were taken from the top of MSME actors. As the UX evaluation results, it is known that the final score of the six scales is above 0.8 and at the excellent level. This means that Yobagi users have a very good user experience in using Yobagi. In addition, Yobagi has met the criteria for good software by having an excellent user experience value. © 2022 IEEE.

This comparative study investigates the modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with different nanoparticles (TiO2 or TiO2-based composites containing BiVO4 and/or CNT), using three distinct methods (blending, coating, and grafting) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The objective was to enhance the photocatalytic and filtration performance for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions. Regarding the UV activity, the PVDF-TiO2/CNT/PVP-coated membrane presented the best performance. Overall, the addition of 2 wt.% CNT to the TiO2 notably enhanced the photocatalytic activity of the membranes for both UV and visible irradiations. Meanwhile, the presence of 2 wt.% BiVO4 was beneficial only for photocatalysis under visible light irradiation. Regarding the filtration of the oil-in-water emulsions, 2 wt.% CNT or BiVO4 addition resulted in the highest fluxes in the series of the PVDF-TiO2-grafted membranes. The presence of pore former PVP led to relatively high fluxes and photocatalytic activities for all series. Regarding the modification methods, coated membranes showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency and lowest fluxes. Grafted membranes showed relatively high photocatalytic efficiencies and the best filtration performances. © The Author(s) 2024.

Inorganic tin (Sn) perovskite nanocrystals offer a promising solution to the potential toxicity concerns associated with their established lead (Pb)-based counterparts. Yet, achieving their superior stability and optoelectronic properties remains an ongoing challenge. Here, we report a synthesis of high-symmetry α-phase CsSnI3 nanocrystals with an ultralong 278 ns carrier lifetime, exceeding previous benchmarks by 2 orders of magnitude through meticulous Sn(IV) control. The nanocrystals demonstrate excellent colloidal stability, uniform monodispersity, and a distinct exciton peak. Central to these outcomes is our designed solid–liquid antioxidation suspension of tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) and zerovalent tin (Sn(0)) that fully addresses the unique coexisting oxygen-driven and solvent-driven Sn oxidation mechanisms in Sn perovskite nanocrystal synthesis. We uncover the largely undervalued function of TOP in mitigating oxygen-driven Sn oxidation and introduce Sn(0) powder to generate a synergistic antioxidation function with TOP, significantly reducing Sn(IV)-induced defects and distortions and contributing to enhanced optoelectronic properties. Strikingly, this approach also profoundly impacts inorganic Sn–Pb perovskite nanocrystals, boosting lifetimes by 2 orders of magnitude and increasing photoluminescence quantum yield over 100-fold to 35%. Our findings illuminate the potential of Sn-based nanocrystals for optoelectronic applications.
