Integrating a large number of embedded memories in System-on-Chips (SoC's) occupies up to more than 70% of the die size, thus requiring Built-In Self-Test (BIST) with the smallest possible area overhead. This paper analyzes MATS++(6N), March C-(10N), March SR(14N), and March CL(12N) test algorithms and shows that they cannot detect either Write Disturb Faults (WDFs) or Deceptive Read Destructive Faults (DRDFs) or both. Therefore to improve fault detection, an automation program is developed based on sequence operation (SQ) generation rules. However after solving the undetected fault, the outcome in term of its detection result of Static Double Cell Faults using the specified test algorithm especially Transition Coupling Faults (CFtrs), Write Destructive Coupling Faults (CFwds), Read Destructive Coupling Faults (CFrds) and Deceptive Read Destructive Faults (CFdrds) are observed. © 2012 IEEE.

We give an efficient encoding and decoding scheme for computing a compact representation of a graph in one of unordered reduced trees, cographs, and series-parallel graphs. The unordered reduced trees are rooted trees in which (i) the ordering of children of each vertex does not matter, and (ii) no vertex has exactly one child. This is one of basic models frequently used in many areas. Our algorithm computes a bit string of length 2 - 1 for a given unordered reduced tree with ≥ 1 leaves in O() time, whereas a known folklore algorithm computes a bit string of length 2n - 2 for an ordered tree with n vertices. Note that in an unordered reduced tree ≤ n 2-2 for ≥ 1. Moreover, the encoding and decoding can be done in linear time. Therefore, from the practical point of view, our representation is also useful to store a lot of unordered reduced trees efficiently. We also apply the scheme for computing a compact representation to cographs and series-parallel graphs. We show that each of cographs with n vertices has a compact representation in 2n - 1 bits, and the number of cographs with n vertices is at most 2 2n - 1. The resulting number is close to the number of cographs with n vertices obtained by the enumeration for small n that approximates Cd n/n3/2, where C = 0.4126 and d = 3.5608 . Series-parallel graphs are well investigated in the context of the graphs of bounded treewidth. We give a method to represent a series-parallel graph with m edges in bits. Hence the number of series-parallel graphs with m edges is at most 2⌈2.5285m-2⌉. As far as the authors know, this is the first non-trivial result about the number of series-parallel graphs. The encoding and decoding of the cographs and series-parallel graphs also can be done in linear time. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Diabetes is one of the foremost causes of death in many countries and a leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and non-traumatic amputation. Therefore, diabetic foot ulceration and amputation cause extensive burden on individuals and health care systems in developed and developing countries. Due to the multi-disciplinary requirements for the treatment of diabetic foot ulceration, telemedicine has been introduced to facilitate the access of the patients to specialized health professionals. In this paper the development of an open source mobile health platform is presented, able to support diagnostic algorithms, with the use of a smartphone. © 2012 ICST Institute for Computer science, Social informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Experimental investigation of human adaptation to change in agent's strategy through a competitive two-player game

We conducted an experimental investigation on human adaptation to change in an agent's strategy through a competitive two-player game. Modeling the process of human adaptation to agents is important for designing intelligent interface agents and adaptive user interfaces that learn a user's preferences and behavior strategy. However, few studies on human adaptation to such an agent have been done. We propose a human adaptation model for a twoplayer game. We prepared an on-line experimental system in which a participant and an agent play a repeated pennymatching game with a bonus round. We then conducted experiments in which different opponent agents (human or robot) change their strategy during the game. The experimental results indicated that, as expected, there is an adaptation phase when a human is confronted with a change in the opponent agent's strategy, and adaptation is faster when a human is competing with robot than with another human.

Optimization of Human Tactile Sensation Using Stochastic Resonance

The development of tactile sensors and its data processing are crucial to advance robotics for allowing robots to explore and handle objects. Robots must sense the tactile feelings caused by contact between their hands and a human. This paper presents an influence of the stochastic resonance (SR) on tactile sensation that can enhance sensitivity by superimposing proper noise upon otherwise undetectable weak signals to detect the target signals. To investigate the SR of human tactile sensation and elucidate the mechanism of tactile SR, we performed a sequence of psychophysical experiments applying tangential directional vibration with a size of 2.5 mm and 8 mm stimulus point. We examined the difference threshold (DL) variation obtained from these experiments to clarify which condition of vibration direction and stimulus size causes the strongest SR. Furthermore we compared these results of tangential stimulus with results of normal stimulus obtained from our prior study. The experimental results show that neither normal nor tangential DL is significantly affected by stimulus point size. Moreover, tactile sensing precision is enhanced by appropriate noise and the characteristics of SR with tangential stimulation are quite different from those with normal stimulation.

In order to reduce uncomfortable cervix screening either using Pap smear or transvaginal ultrasound scanning, an autonomous transabdominal ultrasound scanning is proposed. This requires an exact probe position and angulation to capture the cervix image. In this paper, we present a new method to detect cervix in the best position and angulation. More than 100 samples were processed and analyzed. Image enhancement of the ultrasound image data was performed before further processing and cervix detection. The best cervix ultrasound image was used as a reference template for analysis. The correlation between template and target image was compared using squared error subtraction of histograms. Test results show that taking a different rate threshold at 0.075, an accuracy of 100% for cervix identification is achieved. This method is very efficient since it uses a simple algorithm and requires low memory capacity. This technique will be powerful to be used for real time autonomous scanning of cervix for surgical monitoring or acceptable operator-independent cervix screening.

In this paper, we have shown that the two components (TE and TM waves) of polarized light are manipulated by using the orthogonal soliton pair within a PANDA ring resonator known as a dark-bright soliton pair. In operation, the orthogonal soliton sets can be generated by using the system. The optical field is fed into the ring resonator system, which is controlled by an optical switch by using a single microring. To form the initial spin states, the magnetic field is induced by an aluminum plate (Al) coupled on AlGaAs waveguides for optoelectronic spin-up and - down states. The optoelectronic spin is formed by using the TE and TM wave components. In this manipulation, the electromagnetic radiation is formed by using the orthogonal soliton pulses. In fact, they are photons, which behave like elementary particles. Hence, the spin axis of photon is always parallel to its direction of motion. Many orthogonal sets are also available and existed, in which the spin conservation of many particles is maintained for large scale system use. Therefore, for future applications, the use for high performance storage, low power magnetic logic, quantum logic, quantum gate, nano antenna, nano radio, and applications of spintronic sensing can be realized based on realistic device parameters.

Capricorn Coast's is the most promising and growing regions in Queensland, Australia due to the national and international ecological icon Great Keppel Island and the Great Barrier Reef. Over the last couple of decades, these places attracted the attention of the local communities, national and international tourists which caused steady growth of population in the Capricorn Coast region. This growing population has not only increased the electricity demand but also caused significant damages to the climate in many ways. In this study, a feasibility study has been carried out to explore the potential for deployment of both small-scale and large-scale renewable energy in the Capricorn Coast region to meet the growing energy demand and reduce global warming. Hybrid renewable energy model has been developed using HOMER and RETScreen simulation software to investigate the cost-economic and climate-friendly attributes of the systems. Simulation study clearly indicates that renewable energy not only meets the energy-crisis but it is also economically viable and can play an active role in improving climate of the Capricorn Coast region.

We report on a clear solar-cycle variation of the Sun’s shadow in the 10 TeV cosmic-ray flux observed by the Tibet air shower array during a full solar cycle from 1996 to 2009. In order to clarify the physical implications of the observed solar cycle variation, we develop numerical simulations of the Sun’s shadow, using the potential field source surface model and the current sheet source surface (CSSS) model for the coronal magnetic field. We find that the intensity deficit in the simulated Sun’s shadow is very sensitive to the coronal magnetic field structure, and the observed variation of the Sun’s shadow is better reproduced by the CSSS model. This is the first successful attempt to evaluate the coronal magnetic field models by using the Sun’s shadow observed in the TeV cosmic-ray flux.

Particulate Matter and Black Carbon Concentration Levels in Ashaiman, a Semi-Urban Area of Ghana, 2008

Particulate matter and black carbon concentration levels in Ashaiman, a semi-urban area of Ghana was assessed. Using IVL PM2.5 and PM10 particle samplers, airborne particulate matter was sampled on Teflon filters for a period of three months. In addition to determination of particulate mass in the two fractions by gravimetrical method, aerosol filters were analyzed to determine Black Carbon (BC) concentration levels using the black smoke method. BC fractions in fine and coarse, together with PM2.5 to PM10 ratio were determined. PM2.5 mass concentrations determined averaged 23.26 μg/m3 (3.85 - 46.43 μg/m3) and that of PM10 was 96.56 μg/m3 (37.10-293.06 μg/m3). The results were compared with some literature values and World Health Organization guideline values. The values obtained for PM2.5 to PM10 ratio and for PM10-2.5 concentrations, suggest that, the semi-urban background aerosol is not only largely made up of combustion generated carbonaceous particles but also particulate matter emissions from natural activities.
