Expressing the confidence level of a system’s suggestions by using speech sounds is an important cue to users of the system for perceiving how likely it is for the suggestions to be correct. We assume that expressing the levels of confidence using human-like expressions will cause users to have a poorer impression of a system than if artificial subtle expressions (ASEs) were used when the quality of the presented information does not match the expressed level of confidence. We confirmed that this assumption was correct by conducting a psychological experiment. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

Rice cultivation date estimation based on remote sensing data is critical information to evaluate the damages in rice fields from natural disasters. In this study, the 8-day composite normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data was modeled as a triply modulated cosine function, and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to estimate the mean, amplitude and phase parameters of the cosine function. The cultivation dates are estimated as the date where the seasonal variation derived from the EKF is greater than a threshold after its minimum. From the experimental results, the estimated cultivation dates derived from the proposed algorithm agree with rice cultivation information from the National Rice Department. The 75.56 percentages of the estimated cultivation dates is within 16 days for the rain-fed rice areas, and more than 80 percentages of the estimated data is within 16 days for irrigated areas with two crop cycles per year.

Proposal and investigation of miniaturizing unbalanced dipole antenna for ultra wideband radio

In this paper, a half-sized unbalanced dipole antenna with fan-shaped and trapezoidal radiators is proposed. In addition, the VSWR, input impedance characteristics, and radiation patterns of the proposed antenna were investigated. It was found that the antenna has a maximum bandwidth when the radius of the fan-shaped element is 12 mm, the length of the upper base is 12 mm, the length of the lower base is 20 mm, the height of the trapezoidal element is 22 mm, the distance between the fanshaped and trapezoidal elements is 0.4 mm, and the thickness of the antenna elements is 1.6 mm. In spite of the radiator area being 60% that of an unbalanced dipole antenna with semicircular and trapezoidal radiators, VSWR characteristics less than 2.0 and a relative bandwidth of 133% over the frequency band of 3.0 to 15 GHz were obtained.

The increasing demands on quality of power, emissions and overall performance of combustion engines lay new goals for the hardware and the software development of control systems. High-performance embedded controllers open the possibilities for application of numerical methods to solve the problems of modeling and control of combustion engines. Algorithms for estimation of state and parameters are essential components of many advanced control, monitoring and signal processing engine applications. A widely applicable estimator is given by the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which defines a finite memory recursive algorithm suited for real-time implementation, where only the last measurement is used to update the state estimate, based on the past history being approximately summarized by the a priori estimate of the state and the error covariance matrix estimate. The proposed EKF uses an augmented air-path state-space model to estimate unmeasurable mass flow quantities. The EKF algorithm based on the augmented state-space model considerably reduces the modeling errors compared to the open loop estimator simulation and compared to the EKF without the augmentation which is demonstrated on a standard production Diesel engine data. The experimental validation of the observed state quantities is performed against the measured pressures and turbocharger speed data. The estimated mass flow quantities are indirectly validated through the air compressor flow that is directly validated against air mass flow sensor data. Two two-sensor setups are considered in this study. In the first experiment the intake manifold pressure and the turbocharger speed is used. The second experiment uses the intake manifold pressure and the exhaust manifold pressure as the measurement information for the EKF. The second experiment gives more precise mass flow estimate in term of less bias on the estimates, but more variance due to the high frequency exhaust manifold pressure variations caused by the

The impressions made by a blinking light used to create artificial subtle expressions (ASEs) and by a robot's appearance on users were investigated. The blinking light, which shows the user that the robot is performing speech recognition and thereby prevents utterance collisions, was separated from the robot by embedding it in a pedestal unit. In an evaluation experiment, participants performed five tasks with a spoken dialogue system coupled to a robot placed on the pedestal. The participants' impressions of the dialogue interactions and of the robot were obtained under four conditions (w/ light blinking or w/o blinking;humanoid or cuboid robot). The cuboid robot created a stronger impression of comfort and excitement for the interactions while the blinking light did not create a strong impression of anything. The robot's appearance and the blinking did not create a strong impression of anything for the robot. This suggests that the blinking light in the pedestal unit is a factor that is independent of robot appearance, meaning that the pedestal unit can be applied to robots with various appearances. © 2012 IEEE.

A comparison of implications in orthomodular quantum logic-morphological analysis of quantum logic

Morphological operators are generalized to lattices as adjunction pairs (Serra, 1984;Ronse, 1990;Heijmans and Ronse, 1990;Heijmans, 1994). In particular, morphology for set lattices is applied to analyze logics through Kripke semantics (Bloch, 2002;Fujio and Bloch, 2004;Fujio, 2006). For example, a pair of morphological operators as an adjunction gives rise to a temporalization of normal modal logic (Fujio and Bloch, 2004;Fujio, 2006). Also, constructions of models for intuitionistic logic or linear logics can be described in terms of morphological interior and/or closure operators (Fujio and Bloch, 2004). This shows that morphological analysis can be applied to various non-classical logics. On the other hand, quantum logics are algebraically formalized as orhomodular or modular ortho-complemented lattices (Birkhoff and von Neumann, 1936;Maeda, 1980;Chiara and Giuntini, 2002), and shown to allow Kripke semantics (Chiara and Giuntini, 2002). This suggests the possibility of morphological analysis for quantum logics. In this article, to show an efficiency of morphological analysis for quantum logic, we consider the implication problem in quantum logics (Chiara and Giuntini, 2002). We will give a comparison of the 5 polynomial implication connectives available in quantum logics. © 2012 Mitsuhiko Fujio.

The presence of motion artifacts in the photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals is one of the major obstacles in the extraction of reliable cardiovascular parameters in real time and continuous monitoring applications. In the current paper we present an algorithm for motion artifact detection, which is based on the analysis of the variations in the time and period domain characteristics of the PPG signal. The extracted features are ranked using a feature selection algorithm (NMIFS) and the best features are used in a Support Vector Machine classification model to distinguish between clean and corrupted sections of the PPG signal. The results achieved by the current algorithm (SE: 0.827 and SP: 0.927) show that both time and especially period domain features play an important role in the discrimination of motion artifacts from clean PPG pulses.

Malware writers attempt to generate different shapes of a malware to evade the signature-based scanners. As the number of variants of a metamorphic malware is increased, the analysis of all variants and selecting the appropriate signature and updating the database of the antivirus becomes more tiresome and time-consuming. Furthermore, for automated generated metamorphic viruses, which utilize the virus kits to produce different instances, sometime it is not possible to analyze all of them. Therefore, use of some classification methods to speed up the analysis process is necessary. In this paper, we show that how the histogram of instructions opcodes can help us in classification of metamorphic virus family variants.
