Prober is a functional and performance analysis tool for parallel programs, developed during an undergraduate research project. In this paper we show the new expanded version of Prober, in which some features from different software tools are aggregated. It can be used as a single tool to aid the developer in the performance analysis of parallel programs. Our main goal is to provide a new version of Prober, with additional features. Among them we can highlight: the interpretation of user scripts, a user-level support library the generation of speedup and efficiency graphics, batch execution and a new user interface. In order to show, verify and analyze the use of the new version of Prober, we did performance tests in a parallel image convolution program. We added performance measuring routines to collect performance data within different internal code segments;built a set of scripts to specify the performance tests;ran the set of scripts in batch mode;used Prober to generate graphics and statistics based on the collected performance data;and analyzed the results rising Prober as an aid tool.

In this paper we analyze the teaching and learning of parallel processing through performance analysis using a software tool called Prober. This tool is a functional and performance analyzer of parallel programs that we proposed and developed during an undergraduate research project. Our teaching and learning approach consists of a practical class where students receive explanations about some concepts of parallel processing and the use of the tool. They do some oriented and simple performance tests on parallel programs and analyze their results using Prober as a single aid tool. Finally, students answer a self-assessment questionnaire about their formation, their knowledge of parallel processing concepts and also about the usability of Prober. Our main goal is to show that students can learn concepts of parallel processing in a clearer, faster and more efficient way using our approach.

We present a new learning method of microprocessor architecture based on design and verification using functional simulation. Our main goals are to improve and optimize the learning process, motivating students to study and learn theoretical and practical aspects of microprocessor architecture, using functional simulators to validate the microprocessor design and to construct knowledge; and develop research activities during an undergraduate course. Our method is based on learning, constructivism theory, problem based learning, group projects, design of academic microprocessors as motivation for theory study/learning and verification of designed microprocessors through functional simulators developed by students. To validate the proposed method we analyze two microprocessors and functional simulators: a digital signal processor using ASIP and RISC concepts, and a RISC ASIP home automation processor. They were developed in a computer architecture course (computer science, PUC-Minas, Brazil) as the application of this method. In the conclusion students and professor analyze the results, highlighting the main differences, advantages and disadvantages of the new method.

The El Niño-Southern oscillation and long-range forecasting of flows in the ganges

Several recent studies have shown that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index has a significant influence on various climatic and hydrologic signals across the globe. This study attempts to identify the nature and strength of possible teleconnections between the Ganges River flow and ENSO, and to develop a model which can capture, at least in part, the natural variability of flow, and provide a large forecasting lead-time. The motivation came from the fact that, in the past, hydrologic forecasts of the basin through rainfall-runoff modelling could provide a lead-time on the order of the basin response time, which is several days or so. Such a short forecasting lead-time is not adequate to hedge against extreme events (flood or drought) in large river basins. This is, perhaps, the first attempt to relate flows in the Ganges with ENSO. Our analysis suggests that a significant relationship exists between the natural variability of the Ganges annual flow and ENSO index. Through further investigation, we show that the rate of change of ENSO index is also statistically related to the Ganges flow. A statistical model that combines all these indicators to forecast annual flow in the Ganges is proposed. This model uses current flow data, predicted ENSO data and its gradient to forecast flow in the Ganges with a forecasting lead-time of 1 year. The model also provides a quantitative measure of forecasting uncertainty. A key advantage of this model is that it does not require rainfall and stream flow information from upstream areas and countries. We have used 45 years of data for model development and calibration, and 15 years of data for validation. It is encouraging to note that all four of the validation forecasts during the El Niño and La Niña events are within the 95% confidence intervals. These results demonstrate the strength of the proposed approach Fand suggest further exploration of this long-range forecasting methodology for other major rivers in the world. C

A fuzzy inference system (FIS) was developed to detect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by analyzing the respiratory airflow signal in adults. The parameters analyzed were the normalized area and the standard deviation of consecutive 3-second intervals of baseline adjusted and rectified airflow signal. Fuzzy logic was used to process these parameters to detect apnea and hypopnea when the output values were within a specified range extracted from OSA patient data. The FIS comprised of three major stages of computation: fuzzification, fuzzy rule evaluation and defuzzification. Seven males and two females with an average age of 48 years (range: 26 - 66 years), an average weight of 102 kg (range: 63 - 159 kg), an average height of 1.7 m (range: 1.5 - 1.8 m) and an average body mass index (BMI) of 33 kg/m/sup 2/ (range: 21 - 42 kg/m/sup 2/) participated in this study. Patients spent at least 8 hours in an accredited sleep laboratory. However, patient data was collected for only part of this time. The total amount of test time for all nine patients was 38.83 hours with an average of 4.31 hours/patient (range: 1.92 - 7.63 hours). The total number of apnea events occurring during this time was 808, and the number of hypopnea events was 694. The membership functions for the FIS were derived by analyzing apnea and hypopnea events in four patients. The data from all nine patients were used in algorithm performance evaluation. The apnea and hypopnea events were scored by a sleep specialist and were used to test the correct detection rate by the FIS. The results demonstrated that the FIS reached an overall correct detection rate of 83% across all patients. The false negative rate was 17% and the false positive rate was 12%. The correct detection rate varied from patient to patient and correct rates greater than 90% were achieved in three patients. This paper reports a model of document retrieval for the Portuguese language, developed from a Miyamoto document-retrieval model. The Miyamoto model is based upon semantic similarity detection of descriptors by co-occurrences. The proposed model may be considered an extension of the Miyamoto model because it considers lexical similarities and expression similarities. Hence, descriptors and queries are expressions, i.e. series of words and connectors (prepositions, etc.). The similarity between words is based on the comparison between possible radicals for the detection of words with identical or similar meanings. The expression similarity is determined by comparing words and connectors using an adaptation of a Bruza and van der Weide (1991) model. The proposed Miyamoto model extension considers both: the determination of a fuzzy thesaurus by a fuzzy index, achieved through lexical descriptor similarities; and the possibility of a non-controlled vocabulary use by the determination of similarities between document descriptors and query expressions. A sample document base was created for the comparison between the models. The results show the usefulness of the proposed model for document retrieval in the Portuguese language.

The objective of this research was to identify the relationships between the selection process and the perceived impacts of information technology on the physician's practice. A telephone survey was conducted with office representatives of 407 physician practices in Oregon. The descriptive results are presented in this summary paper. Relationships were identified between the selection process and the perceived impacts of the software on the practice. These relationships are not directly presented in this paper but are summarized and recommendations are made to physician practices for selecting software.

To date, few articles have documented the selection process and the resulting impact of the information technology on the health care organization. Information technology (IT) for this study is defined as: computer software used to store, transport and communicate information. This study was designed to gain understanding on how physicians and office staff select software and what the perceptions are of the software after implementation. The primary objective of this research was to identify relationships (if any) between the selection process and the perceived impacts of the software on the physician's practice.
