A search for new particles decaying into a pair of top quarks is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Events consistent with top-quark pair production and the fully hadronic decay mode of the top quarks are selected by requiring multiple high transverse momentum jets including those containing b-hadrons. Two analysis techniques, exploiting dedicated top-quark pair reconstruction in different kinematic regimes, are used to optimize the search sensitivity to new hypothetical particles over a wide mass range. The invariant mass distribution of the two reconstructed top-quark candidates is examined for resonant production of new particles with various spins and decay widths. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for new hypothetical Z′ bosons, dark-matter mediators, Kaluza-Klein gravitons and Kaluza-Klein gluons. By comparing with the predicted production cross sections, the Z′ boson in the topcolor-assisted-technicolor model is excluded for masses up to 3.1–3.6 TeV, the dark-matter mediators in a simplified framework are excluded in the mass ranges from 0.8 to 0.9 TeV and from 2.0 to 2.2 TeV, and the Kaluza-Klein gluon is excluded for masses up to 3.4 TeV, depending on the decay widths of the particles.

The fragmentation of high-energy gluons at small opening angles is largely unconstrained by present measurements. Gluon splitting to b-quark pairs is a unique probe into the properties of gluon fragmentation because identified b-tagged jets provide a proxy for the quark daughters of the initial gluon. In this study, key differential distributions related to the g→bb¯ process are measured using 33 fb−1 of s=13 TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2016. Jets constructed from charged-particle tracks, clustered with the anti-kt jet algorithm with radius parameter R=0.2, are used to probe angular scales below the R=0.4 jet radius. The observables are unfolded to particle level in order to facilitate direct comparisons with predictions from present and future simulations. Multiple significant differences are observed between the data and parton shower Monte Carlo predictions, providing input to improve these predictions of the main source of background events in analyses involving boosted Higgs bosons decaying into b-quarks.

A search is conducted for the electroweak pair production of a chargino and a neutralino pp→χ˜1±χ˜20, where the chargino decays into the lightest neutralino and a W boson, χ˜1±→χ˜10W±, while the neutralino decays into the lightest neutralino and a Standard Model-like 125 GeV Higgs boson, χ˜20→χ˜10h. Fully hadronic, semileptonic, diphoton, and multilepton (electrons, muons) final states with missing transverse momentum are considered in this search. Higgs bosons in the final state are identified by either two jets originating from bottom quarks (h→bb¯), two photons (h→γγ), or leptons from the decay modes h→WW, h→ZZ or h→ττ. The analysis is based on 36.1 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Observations are consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and 95% confidence-level limits of up to 680 GeV in χ˜1±/χ˜20 mass are set in the context of a simplified supersymmetric model.

A measurement of production cross sections of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions is presented in the H→ττ decay channel. The analysis is performed using 36.1 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. All combinations of leptonic (τ→ℓvv¯ with ℓ=e,μ) and hadronic (τ→hadrons v) τ decays are considered. The H→ττ signal over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is established with an observed (expected) significance of 4.4 (4.1) standard deviations. Combined with results obtained using data taken at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies, the observed (expected) significance amounts to 6.4 (5.4) standard deviations and constitutes an observation of H→ττ decays. Using the data taken at s=13 TeV, the total cross section in the H→ττ decay channel is measured to be 3.77−0.59+0.60 (stat) −0.74+0.87 (syst) pb, for a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV assuming the relative contributions of its production modes as predicted by the Standard Model. Total cross sections in the H→ττ decay channel are determined separately for vector-boson-fusion production and gluon-gluon-fusion production to be σH→ττVBF=0.28±0.09 (stat) −0.09+0.11 (syst) pb and σH→ττggF=3.1±1.0 (stat) −1.3+1.6 (syst) pb, respectively. Similarly, results of a fit are reported in the framework of simplified template cross sections. All measurements are in agreement with Standard Model expectations.

computer science offers a large set of tools for prototyping, writing, running, testing, validating, sharing and reproducing results, however computational science lags behind. In the best case, authors may provide their source code as a compressed archive and they may feel confident their research is reproducible. But this is not exactly true. Jonathan Buckheit and David Donoho proposed more than two decades ago that an article about computational results is advertising, not scholarship. The actual scholarship is the full software environment, code, and data that produced the result. This implies new workflows, in particular in peer-reviews. Existing journals have been slow to adapt: source codes are rarely requested, hardly ever actually executed to check that they produce the results advertised in the article. Rescience is a peer-reviewed journal that targets computational research and encourages the explicit replication of already published research, promoting new and open-source implementations in order to ensure that the original research can be replicated from its description. To achieve this goal, the whole publishing chain is radically different from other traditional scientific journals. Rescience resides on GitHub where each new implementation of a computational study is made available together with comments, explanations, and software tests. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This research deals with the hybridization of the two softcomputing fields, which are chaos theory and evolutionary computation. This paper aims on the experimental investigations on the chaos-driven evolutionary algorithm Differential Evolution (DE) concept. This research represents the continuation of the preliminary satisfactory results obtained by means of chaos embedded (driven) DE, which utilizes the chaotic dynamics in the place of pseudorandom number generators The novelty of this work represents the experimental analysis of the chaotic dynamics directly injected into the DE. To be more precise, this research investigates the influence of parameter settings to the performance of chaos driven DE. Both settings for mutation and crossover DE control parameters and adjustable chaotic system parameters are experimentally investigated here. Repeated simulations were performed on the selected set of well-known benchmark functions in higher dimensions. Finally, the obtained results are compared with canonical DE and state-of-The art representative of basic adaptive variant jDE. © 2015 IEEE.

Precise knowledge of solar radiation is indeed essential in different technological and scientific applications of solar energy. Temperature-based estimation of global solar radiation would be appealing owing to broad availability of measured air temperatures. In this study, the potentials of soft computing techniques are evaluated to estimate daily horizontal global solar radiation (DHGSR) from measured maximum, minimum, and average air temperatures (T max, T min, and T avg) in an Iranian city. For this purpose, a comparative evaluation between three methodologies of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), radial basis function support vector regression (SVR-rbf), and polynomial basis function support vector regression (SVR-poly) is performed. Five combinations of T max, T min, and T avg are served as inputs to develop ANFIS, SVR-rbf, and SVR-poly models. The attained results show that all ANFIS, SVR-rbf, and SVR-poly models provide favorable accuracy. Based upon all techniques, the higher accuracies are achieved by models (5) using T max–T min and T max as inputs. According to the statistical results, SVR-rbf outperforms SVR-poly and ANFIS. For SVR-rbf (5), the mean absolute bias error, root mean square error, and correlation coefficient are 1.1931 MJ/m2, 2.0716 MJ/m2, and 0.9380, respectively. The survey results approve that SVR-rbf can be used efficiently to estimate DHGSR from air temperatures.

The study of database analysis and design is typically a core in an informatics/computer science undergraduate/postgraduate study program. However, a survey conducted by Connolly in 2005 concluded that in Europe, companies considered the skill of database design is the most lacking skill in IT graduate recruits. To overcome the problem, Connolly and Begg in 2006 proposed the problem/project-based learning as an approach to study database design. This paper presents our work on a learning tool on the database analysis and design, focusing on the data requirement analysis and conceptual data modeling phase. The tool is designed based on the principles of problem/project-based learning by Connolly and Begg. The learning tool is developed on top of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) by creating a new plug-in for data modeling called DBDesign. We conducted some interviews to a number of teachers and students of informatics/computer engineering study programs to obtain some opinions about the usefulness of the learning tool in improving the database analysis and design skills. All respondents agree that the tool will help students in learning database analysis and design. Nevertheless, some features are considered to be less important than others to be provided in such database learning tool; therefore, further study is required on the features.

A software for distributed neural network training is introduced here. The introduced software named NeuralGenesis implements a client - server model for parallel genetic algorithms with custom features such as: an enhanced stopping rule, an advanced mutation scheme and periodical application of a local search procedure. The software is coded in Qt5 for portability reasons and it is freely available for the majority of operating system.
