Wearable devices performing advanced bio-signal analysis algorithms are aimed to foster a revolution in healthcare provision of chronic cardiac diseases. In this context, energy efficiency is of paramount importance, as long-term monitoring must be ensured while relying on a tiny power source. Operating at a scaled supply voltage, just above the threshold voltage, effectively helps in saving substantial energy, but it makes circuits, and especially memories, more prone to errors, threatening the correct execution of algorithms. The use of error detection and correction codes may help to protect the entire memory content, however it incurs in large area and energy overheads which may not be compatible with the tight energy budgets of wearable systems. To cope with this challenge, in this paper we propose to limit the overhead of traditional schemes by selectively detecting and correcting errors only in data highly impacting the end-to-end quality of service of ultra-low power wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) devices. This partition adopts the protection of either significant words or significant bits of each data element, according to the application characteristics (statistical properties of the data in the application buffers), and its impact in determining the output. The proposed heterogeneous error protection scheme in real ECG signals allows substantial energy savings (11% in wearable devices) compared to state-of-the-art approaches, like ECC, in which the whole memory is protected against errors. At the same time, it also results in negligible output quality degradation in the evaluated power spectrum analysis application of ECG signals.

A reliable and robust routing service for Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) must be able to adapt to topology changes. User experience on watching live video sequences must also be satisfactory even in scenarios with buffer overflow and high packet loss ratio. In this paper, we introduce a Cross-layer Link quality and Geographical-aware beaconless opportunistic routing protocol (XLinGO). It enhances the transmission of simultaneous multiple video flows over FANETs by creating and keeping reliable persistent multi-hop routes. XLinGO considers a set of cross-layer and human-related information for routing decisions, as performance metrics and Quality of Experience (QoE). Performance evaluation shows that XLinGO achieves multimedia dissemination with QoE support and robustness in a multi-hop, multi-flow, and mobile network environments. © 2014 IEEE.

This research deals with the deeper analysis of the novel concept of a multi-chaos-driven evolutionary algorithm Differential Evolution (DE). This paper is aimed at the embedding and alternating of set of two discrete dissipative chaotic systems in the form of chaos pseudo random number generator for DE. Repeated simulations were performed on the selected test function in higher dimensions. Finally, the obtained results are compared with canonical DE. In this study the performance of two popular evolutionary computational techniques (particle swarm optimization and differential evolution) is compared in the task of batch reactor geometry optimization. Both algorithms are enhanced with chaotic pseudo-random number generator (CPRNG) based on Lozi chaotic map. It is depicted the course of the reactor processes dynamical parameters for the best obtained solutions for both algorithms and numerical values of cost functions are compared. This Letter presents a search for new resonances with mass larger than 250 GeV, decaying to a Z boson and a photon. The dataset consists of an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z bosons are identified through their decays either to charged, light, lepton pairs (e⁺e⁻, μ⁺μ⁻) or to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background in the whole mass range investigated and upper limits are set on the production cross section times decay branching ratio to Zγ of a narrow scalar boson with mass between 250 GeV and 2.75 TeV. © 2016 The Author(s)

Continuous authentication modalities allow a device to authenticate users transparently without interrupting them or requiring their attention. This is especially important on smartphones, which are more prone to be lost or stolen than regular computers, and carry plenty of sensitive information. There is a multitude of signals that can be harnessed for continuous authentication on mobile devices, such as touch input, accelerometer, and gyroscope, etc. However, existing public datasets include only a handful of them, limiting the ability to do experiments that involve multiple modalities. To fill this gap, we performed a large-scale user study to collect a wide spectrum of signals on smartphones. Our dataset combines more modalities than existing datasets, including movement, orientation, touch, gestures, and pausality. This dataset has been used to evaluate our new behavioral modality named Hand Movement, Orientation, and Grasp (H-MOG). This poster reports on the data collection process and outcomes, as well as preliminary authentication results. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Many different applications like face/people detection, image content interpretation, de-identification for privacy protection in multimedia content, etc. requires skin detection as a pre-processing step. There is no a perfect solution for skin detection, since this process is a compromise on speed, simplicity and precision (detection quality). There are many different techniques for skin detection modeling ranging from simple models based on one or several thresholds to advanced models based on neural network, Bayesian classifier, maximum entropy, k-means clustering, etc. This paper proposes a simple model, based on ratios of red, green and blue components of the RGB color model. It describes how to make a compromise in a skin detection modeling by using three levels of rules. Data analysis that supports conclusions is performed on the dataset from Universidad de Chile (UChile, dbskin2 - complete set) that contains 103 images and their annotations.
