Developing teaching materials is a time-consuming and expensive activity. Thus, over the years, several consortia have created joint materials to benefit from them. It is expected that shared teaching materials are a means to save effort in its development, to transfer methodological and technical knowledge between different university staff, and to exchange experience in practical application. However, does it really pay off considering the diversity of different educational environments and the difficulties of using externally produced materials, rather than dedicated individual ones? This paper reports on the experience gained in a multi-country project. Both success factors and problems are outlined. It turned out that sharing an educational repository by several partners supports maintaining quality of teaching materials by joint efforts and distributed contributions.

This paper presents a novel method to recognize subtle emotions based on optical strain magnitude feature extraction from the temporal point of view. The common way that subtle emotions are exhibited by a person is in the form of visually observed micro-expressions, which usually occur only over a brief period of time. Optical strain allows small deformations on the face to be computed between successive frames although these subtle changes can be minute. We perform temporal sum pooling for each frame in the video to a single strain map to summarize the features over time. To reduce the dimensionality of the input space, the strain maps are then resized to a pre-defined resolution for consistency across the database. Experiments were conducted on the SMIC (Spontaneous Micro-expression) Database, which was recently established in 2013. A best three-class recognition accuracy of 53.56% is achieved, with the proposed method outperforming the baseline reported in the original work by almost 5%. This is the first known optical strain based classification of micro-expressions. The closest related work employed optical strain to spot micro-expressions, but did not investigate its potential for determining the specific type of micro-expression.

Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) was introduced some years ago as a paradigm that allows companies to expose their core competencies as services. Yet, we can only benefit from the full potential of SOC if we explore the possibility of composing services. In practice, service composition enables the development of complex systems by combining existing services, which makes it possible to integrate business processes across different companies. Several languages have been defined to specify service compositions, such as WSBPEL and WS-CDL. However, these languages lack formal semantics, so that they do not allow the verification of the service composition behavior by means of properties such as the absence of deadlocks and livelocks. In this paper, we present a structured survey on initiatives in which formal description techniques were applied to specify and possibly verify service compositions. As a result of this study, we identified some open challenges and some topics for future work.

In this article a portable and wearable wireless system to measure the respiratory rate and signal using embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based optical sensor into textile (nylon) is realized. The measured data is analyzed and compared with the output data of a commercial wired piezoelectric crystal film respiratory belt from Grass Technology (FBGT-200) as a reference for the sake of validation. The results showed that the resultant average respiratory rate and the signal correlation coefficients between the FBGT-200 and the reference respiratory belt was 0.99 and 0.72 respectively. A variation in correlation coefficient for respiratory signal is found which is related to the variation in volunteer respiration pattern. The developed fiber optic based monitoring system has been tested on ten volunteers of different chest circumferences.

Understanding human behaviour in emergency evacuation from buildings is of utmost importance for fire safety designers, architects and engineers as they elaborate on strategies to improve the emergency paths to exits. This paper describes an experiment designed to elicit human behaviour when facing the urgent need of exiting a room of an unknown building. This test is part of a methodological approach that aims at the creation of a framework coined SPEED (Simulation of Pedestrians and Elicitation of their Emergent Dynamics). A population sample of 22 subjects was used to test such a methodological approach, which consists in having the subjects answering a questionnaire and later on, in playing a Serious Game. The game environment presents the same scenarios shown in the questionnaire using more elaborated 3D rendering to provide players with a sense of realism. The game was developed under the Unity3D game engine and based on the Serious Games concept. Preliminary results are promising, showing that the challenge made players think about the various situations that might happen when facing an emergency. They are also implied to reason on their stream of decisions, such as which direction to take considering the environment and some adverse situations, such as smoke, fire and people running on the opposite direction of the emergency signalling. © 2014 AISTI.

This paper discusses the implementation of an efficient anti-collision algorithm for RFID systems. Conventional TDMA methods do not show a high efficiency and speediness in collision detection and do not take into account the spatial characteristics of tags distribution. By combining the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and SDMA (Space Division Multiple Access) algorithms, the proposed approach takes into account the characteristics of the tag position in the reading area of the reader. Knowing that the SDMA method is based on the principle of Digital Beam Forming (DBF), we used the FFT and IFFT blocks to form the different beams and the OFDM technique to meet the orthogonality condition. We then divided the space into two subsets of beams and applied the TDMA method to detect any collision. The developed RFID anti-collision SDMA system has been coded by VHDL and simulated using the ISE software for FPGA implementation.

In peer-to-peer networks, each node directly connects to other nodes without access points. This type of network system is useful for information sharing by using mobile devices (e.g., smart phones). On message delivery over the network, it is very difficult to assume the static routing if each node is assumed to move. In this paper, we suppose to use gossip-style epidemic message dissemination and show the performance evaluation of several gossip algorithms in terms of network topology. Specifically, we focus on the distribution of links in the network. Our results clarified the characteristics of those algorithms on the topologies that are biased the degree distribution locally.

This paper proposes an obfuscation method against illegal analysis. The proposed method tries to build a fake call flow graph from debugging tools. The call flow graph represents relations among methods, and helps understanding of a program. The fake call flow graph leads misunderstanding of the program. We focus on a hook mechanism of the method call for changing a callee. We conduct two experiments to evaluate the proposed method. First experiment simulates attacks by existing tools: Soot, jad, Procyon, and Krakatau. The Procyon only succeeded decompilation, the others crashed. Second experiment evaluates understandability of the obfuscated program by the hand. Only one subject in the nine subjects answered the correct value. The experiments shows the proposed method has good tolerance against existing tools, and high difficulty of understanding even if the target program is tiny and simple program.

The design and analysis of some algorithms for the implementation of supervisors corresponding to centralized systems using Petri networks is approached in this article. Starting from the basis of supervised control, namely, monitoring and controlling of discrete event systems via a central controller (supervisor), the paper proposes a method for supervised control using Petri net type models based on parallel composition of subsystems. To illustrate and validate the proposed method, a flexible manufacturing system based on a transport system with seven nodes is used.
