Serious Games are increasingly used as a tool for various applications contrary to the traditional entertainment purpose. Many game engines are available, and Unity3D is another example that presents some features such as rapid prototyping and an easy learning curve. The 3D space where action takes place is sometimes hard to map into a logical memory structure providing flexible access to that information. The problem of tracking players' path as well as their decisions in 3D environments arises when there is no previous knowledge of the scenario representation and the creation of a memory data structure poses an extra effort for the modeller. The proposed solution in this paper, albeit simple, is a straightforward way to track the location of the video game character and map it when he/she passes certain limits. This mechanism proved to represent a key step forward, addressing the important issue of tracking the decision-making process of players for future analysis and behaviour elicitation.

Inter-modal interfaces are extremely important for the transportation system as a whole. Therefore, designing and dimensioning airport terminals' curbsides are a major step to improve passengers' experience. Indeed, evaluating such design is a critical task that must be performed to point out the best solution. This paper reports on our modelling, implementation, and evaluation of two curbside scenarios: one as currently applied to the Portela Airport, in Lisbon, and another alternative as proposed by a Transport Consultancy Agency. The contributions are to create a broader methodology to evaluate various scenarios as well as to combine different granularities of analysis in order to leverage a multi-resolution simulation where, under more realistic circumstances, the best scenario can be pointed out. Some preliminary experiments are carried out, whose results are presented and discussed so as to compare their efficiency. Finally, we draw some conclusions and identify ways in which this work can be further extended.

The incorporation of Augmented Reality (AR) in the windshield of automobiles using heads-up displays (HUD) is starting to be implemented by some manufacturers and is proving to be very useful in some situations, including safety distance keeping. This paper reports on a system that warns the driver via the car's HUD when he violates the predefined safety distance, to avoid a possible forward collision, and proposes two different visualization metaphors based on traffic signals. The metaphors are compared, with and without warning sounds, through computer simulations performed by 22 participants from different age groups and driving experiences. One of the metaphors corresponds to a variant of the traffic sign C10 that forbids circulating from the preceding vehicle shorter than a certain minimum headway, whereas the other corresponds to the road safety marks, which recommend the safety distance to be observed from the vehicle ahead. Results show that the metaphor derived from the safety marks, with warning sounds, is preferred by the participants, and was considered the most useful, intuitive and adequate to a forward collision warning. We also found that this metaphor was preferred by all participants that were 42 or more years old, whereas participants between 28 and 41 years old were divided between the two metaphors, with warning sounds.

In this contribution is demonstrated use of two evolutionary algorithms on parameter identification of selected predictive models. Both algorithms were used to indentify parameter of pre-selected ARMA models. At the end are discussed possibilities of use of synthesis of predictive models by means of methods of symbolic regression that has successfully been used on chaotic system identification by means of evolutionary algorithms on measured data. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Serious Games have fostered the training methods and are increasingly used for such purposes. A fire in a public building, such as a hospital, care centre or clinic, is by any point of view a dramatic event. Emergency planning is crucial to prevent and minimize damage and victims. Despite the improvement on safety measures, many occupants and employers in this type of buildings still lack adequate knowledge and training on how to behave in such hazardous situations. EVA is presented as a possible solution, which is based on the concept of Serious Games that can be used as a training tool by safety professionals. A preliminary prototype was developed and some tests were carried out, providing further insights into the human behaviour understanding and presenting promising results. Further research and development are still to be explored, which are discussed in the concluding part of this paper.

Because of the nature of Grid to be heterogeneous and distributed environment, the database systems which should works on Grid must support this architecture. OGSA-DAI is an example of such extensible service based framework that allow data resources to be incorporated into Grid fabrics. On the other side, many algorithms (for example, for data mining) are not built in Java, they aren't open source projects and can't be easily incorporated in OGSA-DAI workflows. For that reason, we propose OGSA-DAI extension with new computational resources and activities that allow executing of external jobs, and returning data into OGSA DAI workflow. In this paper, we introduce heterogeneous and distributed databases, then we discuss our proposed model, and finally, we report our initial implementation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

ATLAS has measured two-particle correlations as a function of the relative azimuthal angle, Δϕ, and pseudorapidity, Δη, in s=13 and 2.76 TeV pp collisions at the LHC using charged particles measured in the pseudorapidity interval |η|<2.5. The correlation functions evaluated in different intervals of measured charged-particle multiplicity show a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at Δϕ∼0 that extends over a wide range of Δη, which has been referred to as the “ridge.” Per-trigger-particle yields, Y(Δϕ), are measured over 2<|Δη|<5. For both collision energies, the Y(Δϕ) distribution in all multiplicity intervals is found to be consistent with a linear combination of the per-trigger-particle yields measured in collisions with less than 20 reconstructed tracks, and a constant combinatoric contribution modulated by cos(2Δϕ). The fitted Fourier coefficient, v2,2, exhibits factorization, suggesting that the ridge results from per-event cos(2ϕ) modulation of the single-particle distribution with Fourier coefficients v2. The v2 values are presented as a function of multiplicity and transverse momentum. They are found to be approximately constant as a function of multiplicity and to have a pT dependence similar to that measured in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions. The v2 values in the 13 and 2.76 TeV data are consistent within uncertainties. These results suggest that the ridge in pp collisions arises from the same or similar underlying physics as observed in p+Pb collisions, and that the dynamics responsible for the ridge has no strong s dependence.
