We present an algorithm for reconstruction of binary images represented on the triangular grid. The algorithm takes into consideration the three natural projections on the triangular grid and uses the maximum flow minimum cost algorithm for the reconstruction of the image. For testing our algorithm we used some artificial binary hexagon shaped images.

Self-diagnosis is a fundamental capability of self-adaptive systems. In order to recover from faults, systems need to know which part is responsible for the incorrect behavior. In previous work we showed how to apply a design-time diagnosis technique at run time to identify faults at the architectural level of a system. Our contributions address three major shortcomings of our previous work: 1) we present an expressive, hierarchical language to describe system behavior that can be used to diagnose when a system is behaving different to expectation; the hierarchical language facilitates mapping low level system events to architecture level events; 2) we provide an automatic way to determine how much data to collect before an accurate diagnosis can be produced; and 3) we develop a technique that allows the detection of correlated faults between components. Our results are validated experimentally by injecting several failures in a system and accurately diagnosing them using our algorithm.

The firefly algorithm (FA) is a new population-based metaheuristic bioinspired on the behavior of the flashing characteristics of fireflies. As a population-based algorithm, the FA suffers from large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For reducing execution times we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the FA algorithm that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In addition, this work proposes the application of the opposition-based learning (OBL) approach to the FA algorithm. The respective hardware implementation (HPOFA) was mapped into a Virtex5 FPGA device and numerical experiments using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the FA algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity and avoiding the premature convergence problem. Synthesis results point out that the HPOFA architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents alternative technique for multi-pose face recognition using double stages classifications: shifting mean LDA (SMLDA) and fusion of scale invariant features (FSIF) based face descriptor. The first stage is employed to find the best class candidates that are similar to the query image the second stage (i.e FSIF) is employed to find the best matched class corresponding to the query image. The aims of this method are to solve the large face variability due to pose variations, to decrease the computational time of FSIF-based face recognition, and to avoid using the 3D scanner for estimating any pose variations of a face image without decreasing the recognition performance. The experimental results show that proposed method can overcome large face variability due to face pose variations, need short the computational time, and give better recognition rate than those of the previous method. In addition, the proposed method also provides better recognition rate than that of 3D based methods without requiring 3D scanner.

Serious Games are increasingly used as a tool for various applications contrary to the traditional entertainment purpose. Many game engines are available, and Unity3D is another example that presents some features such as rapid prototyping and an easy learning curve. The 3D space where action takes place is sometimes hard to map into a logical memory structure providing flexible access to that information. The problem of tracking players' path as well as their decisions in 3D environments arises when there is no previous knowledge of the scenario representation and the creation of a memory data structure poses an extra effort for the modeller. The proposed solution in this paper, albeit simple, is a straightforward way to track the location of the video game character and map it when he/she passes certain limits. This mechanism proved to represent a key step forward, addressing the important issue of tracking the decision-making process of players for future analysis and behaviour elicitation.

Inter-modal interfaces are extremely important for the transportation system as a whole. Therefore, designing and dimensioning airport terminals' curbsides are a major step to improve passengers' experience. Indeed, evaluating such design is a critical task that must be performed to point out the best solution. This paper reports on our modelling, implementation, and evaluation of two curbside scenarios: one as currently applied to the Portela Airport, in Lisbon, and another alternative as proposed by a Transport Consultancy Agency. The contributions are to create a broader methodology to evaluate various scenarios as well as to combine different granularities of analysis in order to leverage a multi-resolution simulation where, under more realistic circumstances, the best scenario can be pointed out. Some preliminary experiments are carried out, whose results are presented and discussed so as to compare their efficiency. Finally, we draw some conclusions and identify ways in which this work can be further extended.

The incorporation of Augmented Reality (AR) in the windshield of automobiles using heads-up displays (HUD) is starting to be implemented by some manufacturers and is proving to be very useful in some situations, including safety distance keeping. This paper reports on a system that warns the driver via the car's HUD when he violates the predefined safety distance, to avoid a possible forward collision, and proposes two different visualization metaphors based on traffic signals. The metaphors are compared, with and without warning sounds, through computer simulations performed by 22 participants from different age groups and driving experiences. One of the metaphors corresponds to a variant of the traffic sign C10 that forbids circulating from the preceding vehicle shorter than a certain minimum headway, whereas the other corresponds to the road safety marks, which recommend the safety distance to be observed from the vehicle ahead. Results show that the metaphor derived from the safety marks, with warning sounds, is preferred by the participants, and was considered the most useful, intuitive and adequate to a forward collision warning. We also found that this metaphor was preferred by all participants that were 42 or more years old, whereas participants between 28 and 41 years old were divided between the two metaphors, with warning sounds.

In this contribution is demonstrated use of two evolutionary algorithms on parameter identification of selected predictive models. Both algorithms were used to indentify parameter of pre-selected ARMA models. At the end are discussed possibilities of use of synthesis of predictive models by means of methods of symbolic regression that has successfully been used on chaotic system identification by means of evolutionary algorithms on measured data. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Serious Games have fostered the training methods and are increasingly used for such purposes. A fire in a public building, such as a hospital, care centre or clinic, is by any point of view a dramatic event. Emergency planning is crucial to prevent and minimize damage and victims. Despite the improvement on safety measures, many occupants and employers in this type of buildings still lack adequate knowledge and training on how to behave in such hazardous situations. EVA is presented as a possible solution, which is based on the concept of Serious Games that can be used as a training tool by safety professionals. A preliminary prototype was developed and some tests were carried out, providing further insights into the human behaviour understanding and presenting promising results. Further research and development are still to be explored, which are discussed in the concluding part of this paper.

This paper deals with the comparison of different methods of speech features extraction for a neural network classifier. We have used a Kohohen self-organizing feature map (SOM) for output-stage classifier which is a specific type of artificial neural nets. The result of this research deals with the accuracy of emotion classifier and compares the two input combinations.
