User's query sometimes does not fully reflect the semantics, so the information retrieval systems return no results as expected results, it is necessary to add semantics to the user's query. The paper represents how to add semantics into a query in Vietnamese language based on Ontology of Object Member Property (OOMP) by improved Similar Noun Phrase Expansion (iSNPE) algorithm. © 2012 ACM.

A novel Genetic programming approach for the improvement of the performance of classifier systems through the synthesis of new training instances is presented. The approach relies on the ability of the Genetic programming engine to identify and exploit shortcomings of classifier systems, and generate instances that are misclassified by them. The addition of these instances to the training set has the potential to improve classifier's performance. The experimental results attained with face detection classifiers are presented and discussed. Overall they indicate the success of the approach. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The combination of a classifier system with an evolutionary image generation engine is explored. The framework is instantiated using an off-the-shelf face detection system and a general purpose, expression-based, genetic programming engine. By default, the classifier returns a binary output, which is inadequate to guide evolution. By retrieving information provided by intermediate results of the classification task, it became possible to develop a suitable fitness function. The experimental results show the ability of the system to evolve images that are classified as faces. A subjective analysis also reveals the unexpected nature and artistic potential of the evolved images. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper reports the highest results (95% in MUC and 92% in CoNLL metric) in the literature for Turkish named entity recognition;more specifically for the task of detecting person, location and organization entities in general news texts. We give an in depth analysis of the previous reported results and make comparisons with them whenever possible. We use conditional random fields (CRFs) as our statistical model. The paper presents initial explorations on the usage of rich morphological structure of the Turkish language as features to CRFs together with the use of some basic and generative gazetteers. © 2012 The COLING.

In this paper, an example of successful cooperation in the field of education is presented. As a part of an international educational project, comprising nine countries, and fifteen universities, a "crash-course" on "Software engineering" has been conducted at the Polytechnic University of Tirana, by a professor from Germany and assistant from Serbia, with the unselfish help from the local professor from Albania. After the fifth conduction of a course, in this paper we present our experiences, share the knowledge gained, depict the difficulties we encountered, and describe the satisfaction we come upon. Many modern streaming applications, such as online analysis of financial, network, sensor and other forms of data are inherently distributed in nature. An important query type that is the focal point in such application scenarios regards actuation queries, where proper action is dictated based on a trigger condition placed upon the current value that a monitored function receives. Recent work studies the problem of (non-linear) sophisticated function tracking in a distributed manner. The main concept behind the geometric monitoring approach proposed there, is for each distributed site to perform the function monitoring over an appropriate subset of the input domain. In the current work, we examine whether the distributed monitoring mechanism can become more efficient, in terms of the number of communicated messages, by extending the geometric monitoring framework to utilize prediction models. We initially describe a number of local estimators (predictors) that are useful for the applications that we consider and which have already been shown particularly useful in past work. We then demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating predictors in the geometric monitoring framework and show that prediction-based geometric monitoring in fact generalizes the original geometric monitoring framework. We propose a large variety of different prediction-based monitoring models for the distributed threshold monitoring of complex functions. Our extensive experimentation with a variety of real data sets, functions and parameter settings indicates that our approaches can provide significant communication savings ranging between two times and up to three orders of magnitude, compared to the transmission cost of the original monitoring framework. © 2012 ACM.

This paper outlines the initial investigations on the concept of a chaos driven Differential Evolution. The focus of this paper is the embedding of chaotic systems in the form of chaos number generator for Differential Evolution. The chaotic systems of interest are the discrete dissipative systems. Three chaotic systems were selected as possible chaos number generators for Differential Evolution. Repeated simulations were performed on benchmark function sets. Finally, the obtained results are compared with canonical Differential Evolution.

This paper develops a new set of conditions for strong practical stability of linear discrete repetitive processes through use of the generalized version of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma, with an extension to examples with uncertainty. These new conditions reduce the problem of determining if an example has this stability property to checking for the existence of a solution to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and, relative to alternatives, can reduce the level of conservatism. The validity of the developed results are demonstrated by numerical example. A numerical example is also given.

Bathcratch is a music entertainment system that converts a bathtub into a DJ controller, allowing an average person in a bathtub to play scratching music The system detects the squeaks made by rubbing the bathtub and associates them with several preset scratching phrases In addition, capacitive touch sensors embedded in the tub allow the selection of scratching phrases and background rhythm tracks Here, we provide a system overview and explain the design, user interface, music controller implementation of this system along with the feedback received for it during a public exhibition © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
