This paper proposed an integration of heart sound and speech for biometrics application .The method the method selects the best fusion and normalization techniques for biometric system. The framework is developed and test the verification task. The approach in this paper is biometrics recognition, for example, providing features that can't be easily copied, such as the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) as the matching model algorithm .A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart sound-speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69% while the fusion type Main Rule provide an EER of 1.1%.

Emergency evacuation plans and evacuation drills are mandatory in public buildings in many countries. Their importance is considerable when it comes to guarantee safety and protection during a crisis. However, sometimes discrepancies arise between the goals of the plan and its outcomes, because people find it hard to take them very seriously, or due to the financial and time resources required. Serious games are a possible solution to tackle this problem. They have been successfully applied in different areas such as health care and education, since they can simulate an environment/task quite accurately, making them a practical alternative to real-life simulations. This paper presents a serious game developed using Unity 3D to recreate a virtual fire evacuation training tool. The prototype application was deployed which allowed the validation by user testing. A sample of 30 individuals tested the evacuating scenario, having to leave the building during a fire in the shortest time possible. Results have shown that users effectively end up learning some evacuation procedures from the activity, even if only to look for emergency signs indicating the best evacuation paths. It was also evidenced that users with higher video game experience had a significantly better performance.

We report the observation of Higgs boson decays to WW* based on an excess over background of 6.1 standard deviations in the dilepton final state, where the Standard Model expectation is 5.8 standard deviations. Evidence for the vector-boson fusion (VBF) production process is obtained with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. The results are obtained from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb−1 from s=7 and 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. For a Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV, the ratio of the measured value to the expected value of the total production cross section times branching fraction is 1.09−0.15+0.16(stat)−0.14+0.17(syst). The corresponding ratios for the gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production mechanisms are 1.02±0.19(stat)−0.18+0.22(syst) and 1.27−0.40+0.44(stat)−0.21+0.30(syst), respectively. At s=8 TeV, the total production cross sections are measured to be σ(gg→H→WW*)=4.6±0.9(stat)−0.7+0.8(syst) pb and σ(VBF H→WW*)=0.51−0.15+0.17(stat)−0.08+0.13(syst) pb. The fiducial cross section is determined for the gluon-fusion process in exclusive final states with zero or one associated jet.

The transverse polarization of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is measured. The analysis uses 760 μb−1 of minimum bias data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2010. The measured transverse polarization averaged over Feynman xF from 5×10−5 to 0.01 and transverse momentum pT from 0.8 to 15 GeV is −0.010±0.005(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ and 0.002±0.006(stat)±0.004(syst) for Λ¯. It is also measured as a function of xF and pT, but no significant dependence on these variables is observed. Prior to this measurement, the polarization was measured at fixed-target experiments with center-of-mass energies up to about 40 GeV. The ATLAS results are compatible with the extrapolation of a fit from previous measurements to the xF range covered by this measurement.

In response to our nation's cry for more engineers, this paper describes how a major university has leveraged four NSF program grants to produce a highly successful program focused on retention, graduation, and graduate degrees. One of the programs is for lower division students, one is for upper division transfer students, one is for non-transfer upper division students and graduate students that have come up through the system, and one is for upper division students who come from five selected non-metropolitan community colleges in Arizona. The last program ties everything all together with a Transfer Student Center, a place for the S-STEM Academic Scholarship Success Class to meet, a place to host potential transfer students, and a place for transfer students to study and network. An emphasis of all of these programs is the encouragement and support of female and underrepresented minority students and students with unmet financial need. These programs have attained a 90-95% retention rate. For upper division transfer students not in the program, the graduation rate is about 70% for males and 64% for females. The transfer GPA shock was shown to be negligent for new program transfer students, compared with a half grade point drop for new upper division transfer students not in the program. Most importantly, during the past three years over 50% of the graduated scholarship students have gone right on to graduate school full-time. Seventy percent of the transfer students who did not intend to go to graduate school when they matriculated to Arizona State University, but who have now chosen to go on to graduate school, have reported that this program was a major influence in this decision change. Several of the students are now in PhD programs preparing to become professors. Complex inorganic brown pigments having a high near infrared solar reflectance have been synthesized. Fe2O3 is the host component and mixtures of Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 were used as the guest components. Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 were mixed into 40 different compositions. It was found that a sample, denoted by S31, with a composition of Fe2O3, Sb2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 of 70, 10, 12, 2 and 6 wt% respectively, gives a maximum near infrared solar reflectance of 46.7%. Brown pigment colours were measured in CIE L*a*b* colour index. The S31 pigment powder was then prepared as a reflective coating material with different amounts of pigment powder from 4-8 g in 100 g of ceramic glaze. The prepared materials were sprayed on the biscuit clay tiles for reflectance measurements. It was found that 5 g of S31 pigment powder mixed with 100 g of ceramic glaze gives the highest near-infrared reflectance value of 41.3%. The newly synthesized pigment is a suitable ceramic roof coating for its high reflectance performance and the durability performing once the ceramic roof installed on house.
