Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts. We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases. © 2020, CC BY.

Introduction to stress triggers, stress shadows and their implications for seismic hazard in Indonesia

Many aspects of earthquake mechanics remain an enigma, e.g.: earthquake interaction and seismic hazard mitigation. One potential bright spot is the finding that simple calculations of stress changes may explain some earthquake occurrences and interactions. This progress is especially lead by abundant studies of stress changes of human-induced seismicity. This work introduces stress triggers, stress shadows, and their implications for seismic hazard in Indonesia. We review our work on stress analysis of the 2016 Aceh earthquake and present a compilation of quantitative earthquake interaction studies from a stress change perspective. The 2016 earthquakes were deadly, caused more than 100 causalities, and unpredicted, in a sense that the driving force and the source mechanism remain unclear. No information was present on the extent of the faulting or the direction of propagation of the event. Therefore, it requires a stress transfer modeling in order to understand the possible seismic hazard distribution. The results of this study provide some clues about certain aspects of earthquake mechanics. It also demonstrates that we still have a lot of work ahead of us before we can understand the complete mechanism of how an earthquake occurs.

Aims. We present the first multi-wavelength study of Mrk 501 including very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray observations simultaneous to X-ray polarization measurements from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Methods. We use radio-to-VHE data from a multi-wavelength campaign organized between 2022-03-01 and 2022-07-19 (MJD 59639 to MJD 59779). The observations were performed by MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, Swift (XRT and UVOT), and several instruments covering the optical and radio bands to complement the IXPE pointings. We characterize the dynamics of the broad-band emission around the X-ray polarization measurements through its multi-band fractional variability and correlations, and compare changes observed in the polarization degree to changes seen in the broad-band emission using a multi-zone leptonic scenario. Results. During the IXPE pointings, the VHE state is close to the average behavior with a 0.2-1 TeV flux of 20% - 50% the emission of the Crab Nebula. Additionally, it shows low variability and a hint of correlation between VHE and X-rays. Despite the average VHE activity, an extreme X-ray behavior is measured for the first two IXPE pointings in March 2022 (MJD 59646 to 59648 and MJD 59665 to 59667) with a synchrotron peak frequency > 1 keV. For the third IXPE pointing in July 2022 (MJD 59769 to 59772), the synchrotron peak shifts towards lower energies and the optical/X-ray polarization degrees drop. All three IXPE epochs show an atypically low Compton dominance in the γ-rays. The X-ray polarization is systematically higher than at lower energies, suggesting an energy-stratification of the jet. While during the IXPE epochs the polarization angle in the X-ray, optical and radio bands align well, we find a clear discrepancy in the optical and radio polarization angles in the middle of the campaign. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are explosive transient events occurring at cosmological distances, releasing a large amount of energy as electromagnetic radiation over several energy bands. We report the detection of the long GRB 201216C by the MAGIC telescopes. The source is located at z = 1.1 and thus it is the farthest one detected at very high energies. The emission above 70 GeV of GRB 201216C is modelled together with multi-wavelength data within a synchrotron and synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) scenario. We find that SSC can explain the broadband data well from the optical to the very-high-energy band. For the late-time radio data, a different component is needed to account for the observed emission. Differently from previous GRBs detected in the very-high-energy range, the model for GRB 201216C strongly favors a wind-like medium. The model parameters have values similar to those found in past studies of the afterglows of GRBs detected up to GeV energies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Comparative analysis of RC4+ algorithm, RC4 NGG algorithm and RC4 GGHN algorithm on image file security

File security is very important in maintaining the confidentiality of the information contained in the file. For that we need a way for information to be kept secrecy, that is with the science of cryptography. Cryptography is one method that disguises data to form encrypted data. In the symmetric RC4+ (Ron Code or Rivest's Cipher) algorithm, it provides secure message security and is an efficient stream cipher. RC4 NGG stream cipher algorithm 3-5 times faster than RC4 algorithm and but still have weakness in KSA randomization. The RC4 GGHN stream cipher algorithm is based on the RC4 algorithm and is relatively more efficient but still has weaknesses. Based on literature review from several research sources, it was stated that RC4+, RC4 NGG, RC4 GGHN are algorithms that are faster and more efficient than RC4 algorithm. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the encryption process with the aim of comparing and knowing which algorithm is better from running time and algorithm complexity. In this research we will perform two tests on each algorithm, image encryption using different key length and same image size and image encryption using the same key length and different image size. The results obtained in this research is RC4 NGG algorithm is the fastest algorithm between the three algorithms that is 13.3% faster than RC4+ and 10.2% faster than RC4 GGHN where the key lengths used in encryption do not affect the processing time and image size used in encryption very affects the processing time.

We searched for proton decay via p→μ+K0 in 0.37 Mton·years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for KS0 and KL0 channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2 Mton·years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of 3.6×1033 years on the proton lifetime.

Silica-calcium phosphate composite (SCPC) and carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) have several superior properties as they are bioactive, bioresorbable and elicit excellent tissue response. The CO3Ap surface layer and hydrated silica developed on the surface of the SCPC may be a key factor for achieving dentin regeneration. On the other hand, calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] have antibacterial properties and biocompatible to dental tissue. Therefore, the combination of CO3Ap, SCPC, and Ca(OH)2 in a bone cement may be favorable as a pulp capping agent that enhances pulp tissue formation and dentin regeneration. The aim of the present study is to synthesize and characterize a novel SCPC-CO3Ap cement for pulp capping application in dentistry. The cement is composed of dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA), vaterite, Ca(OH)2 and SCPC. The set cement was further characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The microstructure of set cement was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the mechanical strength was evaluated by diametral tensile strength (DTS). The FT-IR analyses revealed that the additional bands of carbonate were detected in each sample. The SEM samples of set cement showing more compact surface microstructure of group II compared to other groups. Furthermore, the combination of 5% SCPC and 5% Ca(OH)2 in the cement facilitated a compact structure with superior mechanical strength. The novel SCPC-CO3Ap cement has great potential to be used for pulp capping to facilitate dentin regeneration. © 2017 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/c and 0.5–7 GeV/c, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au+Au collisions and p+p collisions, IAA and ΔAA, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Δϕ, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-pT associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

Merapi volcano located in central Java, Indonesia,is one of the most active stratovolcanoes in the world. Many Earth scientists have conducted studies on this volcano using various methods. The geological features around Merapi are very attractive to be investigated because they have been formed by a complex tectonic process and volcanic activities since tens of millions of years ago. The southern mountain range, Kendeng basin and Opak active fault located around the study area resulted from these processes. DOMERAPI project was conducted to understand deep magma sources of the Merapi volcano comprehensively. The DOMERAPI network was running from October 2013 to mid-April 2015 by deploying 46 broad-band seismometers around the volcano. Several steps, i.e., earthquake event identification,arrival time picking of P and S waves, hypocenter determination and hypocenter relocation, were carried out in this study. We used Geiger＇s method（Geiger 1912） for hypocenter determination and double-difference method for hypocenter relocation. The relocation result will be used to carry out seismic tomographic imaging of structures beneath the Merapi volcano and its surroundings. For the hypocenter determination, the DOMERAPI data were processed simultaneously with those from the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics（BMKG） seismic network in order to minimize the azimuthal gap. We found that the majority of earthquakes occurred outside the DOMERAPI network. There are 464 and 399 earthquakes obtained before and after hypocenter relocation, respectively. The hypocenter relocation result successfully detects some tectonic features, such as a nearly vertical cluster of events indicating a subduction-related backthrust to the south of central Java and a cluster of events to the east of Opak fault suggesting that the fault has an eastward dip.

An analysis of solar neutrino data from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande (SK-IV) from October 2008 to May 2018 is performed and the results are presented. The observation time of the data set of SK-IV corresponds to 2970 days and the total live time for all four phases is 5805 days. For more precise solar neutrino measurements, several improvements are applied in this analysis: lowering the data acquisition threshold in May 2015, further reduction of the spallation background using neutron clustering events, precise energy reconstruction considering the time variation of the PMT gain. The observed number of solar neutrino events in 3.49–19.49 MeV electron kinetic energy region during SK-IV is 65, 443+390−388 (stat.) ± 925 (syst.) events. Corresponding 8B solar neutrino flux is (2.314 ± 0.014 (stat.) ± 0.040 (syst.)) × 106 cm−2 s−1, assuming a pure electron-neutrino flavor component without neutrino oscillations. The flux combined with all SK phases up to SK-IV is (2.336 ± 0.011 (stat.) ± 0.043 (syst.)) × 106 cm−2 s−1. Based on the neutrino oscillation analysis from all solar experiments, including the SK 5805 days data set, the best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters are sin2θ12, solar = 0.306±0.013 and (Formula presented), with a deviation of about 1.5σ from the ∆m221 parameter obtained by KamLAND. The best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from all solar experiments and KamLAND are sin2 θ12, global = 0.307 ± 0.012 and (Formula presented). Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
