With up to 256 silver/silver-chloride (Ag/AgCl) electrodes, research using multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) is nowadays characterized by an increasing number of electrodes. Hence, the preparation gets more and more time-consuming and error-prone. We propose a novel electrode concept based on titanium/titanium nitride (Ti/TiN) electrodes integrated into a novel EEG cap based on fluidicdriven mechanisms. We describe the construction of our electrodes and perform EEG measurements in order to evaluate them in a multichannel setup. Therefore an additional set of conventional Ag/AgCl electrodes was integrated into the Ti/TiN EEG cap, enabling simultaneous recordings with both types of electrodes. In our tests, which included spontaneous EEG like resting state EEG, eye movements, alpha activity, and pattern reversal VEP, we found no considerable differences between compared adjacent electrodes. For the pattern reversal VEP, we found similar potential maps with both types of electrodes. In conclusion, our novel Ti/TiN electrodes have the potential to replace the conventional Ag/AgCl electrodes. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A terahertz (THz) pulse laser with a wavelength of 385 μm is optically pumped by a transverse excited atmospheric CO2 laser based on three-level transition in D2O vapor. The used CO2 laser wavelength is 9.26 μm with an output peak power density of 3.0 MW/cm 2. The 385 μm THz pulse signal was observed at different D 2O vapor pressures. The energy of the THz pulse is performed as a function of the D2O vapor pressure, and a maximum THz pulse signal energy is obtained. ©2010 IEEE.

We evaluated low-impedance power distribution network (PDN) of decoupling capacitor embedded interposers for 3-D integrated LSI system. Measurements are carried out using the developed impedance analyzer system of a wide frequency range for evaluating ultralow impedance, and calculations are carried out using 2.5-D finite element method (FEM) electromagnetic field simulator. We fabricated various types of capacitor mounted or capacitor embedded interposers test element group (TEG), such as surface-mounted and embedded chip capacitors, and thin film capacitors on silicon interposers using the same simple design to compare measurement results with calculation ones. As a result, the chip capacitor embedded organic interposer TEG and thin film capacitor embedded silicon interposer TEG could provide low PDN impedance at a wide frequency range of up to 40 GHz. In particular, the interposer TEGs of the thin film capacitor embedded interposer that shows a low impedance of 0.1 Ω could be evaluated and calculated accurately. By using chip capacitor embedded or thin film capacitor embedded interposers for 3-D integrated LSI system, it is expected that the PDN of the system can be achieved ultralow PDN impedance.

To track the movement of a wireless capsule and get the 6D localization and orientation information of the capsule, a magnetic localization and orientation system is designed. In this system, we propose to enclose two orthogonal permanent magnets in the capsule. With the magnetic sensor array arranged out of the human body, we can measure the magnets' magnetic signals, and compute the magnets' 3D localization and 2D orientation parameters by applying an appropriate algorithm. With this two magnets' localization and orientation information, we can measure the capsule's 6D localization and orientation information with a appropriate algorithm. In this paper, we present a new real time method for capsule's 3D localization and 3D orientation based on multi-magnets' localization and orientation method. The experimental results show that this new method is valid and effective.

A new speckle reduction algorithm based on 2-D lattice filters for SAR imaging is presented. In the new method, the subband decomposition of the speckled image is performed using 2-D lattice filters. The noisy image is decomposed into subband images using high-pass and low-pass filters having lattice structure, then a threshold value is estimated according to noise variance in each subband and soft-thresholding is applied on the subband images. The despeckled image is obtained from the thresholded subband images using the inverse lattice filters. The proposed speckle reduction method is applied to RADARSAT/SAR images. The performance of the proposed method has also been compared with median filtering, and stationary wavelet transform based speckle reduction methods. Results show that the proposed method may be used efficiently for speckle noise reduction in SAR images.

We developed an impedance analyzer system with a wide frequency range for evaluating ultralow impedance. The four-point impedance measurement technique is introduced using this system. This impedance measurement can be reliably and accurately carried out by a four-point technique where one pair of contacts is used to inject a signal into the device under test (DUT), and a second pair of contacts is used to sense the resulting signal across the DUT. As a result, an evaluation system for the tens of micro-ohms of trans-impedance Z 21 in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 40 GHz can be realized. By using two microwave contact probes, PDN impedance evaluation with contacted pads is realized. Therefore, the PDN impedance can be measured directly without the connectors during the measurement. Moreover, it is expected that the accurate and wideband impedance evaluation of a substrate with an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure can be realized.

To track the movement of wireless capsule endoscope in the human body, we design a magnetic localization and orientation system. In this system, capsule contains a permanent magnet as the movable object. A wearable magnetic sensor array is arranged out of the human body to capture the magnetic signal. This sensor array is composed of magnetic sensors, Honeywell product HMC1043. The variations of magnet field intensity and direction are related to the capsule position and orientation. Therefore, the 3D localization information and 2D orientation parameters of capsule can be computed based on the captured magnetic signals and by applying an appropriate algorithm. In order to initialize the system and improve the tracking accuracy, we propose a calibration technique based on high-accurate localization equipment, FASTRAK. The calibration method includes two steps. Firstly, we acquire the accurate reference data from FASTRAK tracking equipment, and transform them into the position and orientation parameters of the magnet. Secondly, we calculate three important parameters for the sensor calibration: the sensitivity, the center position, and the orientation. Based on the calibration, we can adjust the magnetic localization and orientation system quickly and accurately. The experimental results prove that the calibration method used in our system can improve the system with satisfactory tracking accuracy.

A new speckle reduction algorithm based on subband decomposition and multiscale edge detection is presented. The subband decomposition is performed using a DFT/RDFT-based symmetric, zero-phase, nonoverlapping digital filter bank. The noisy images are decomposed into sub-images using RDFT transform based subband decomposition, an edge image is obtained for each level using these sub-images, then a threshold value is estimated according to noise variance in each subband and soft-thresholding is applied on the non-edge regions of the subband images. The despeckled image is obtained from the thresholded subband images using the inverse RDFT transform. The proposed speckle reduction method is applied to several test images corrupted by speckle noise as well as experimental RADARSAT/SAR images. Despeckled images show that this method has better performance than the case where no edge information is used.
