The National Research Grid Initiative (NAREGI) is one of the major Japanese national IT projects currently being conducted. NAREGI will cover the period 2003-2007, and collaboration among industry, academia, and the government will play a key role in its success. The Center for Grid Research and Development has been established as a center for R&D of high-performance, scalable grid middleware technologies, which are aimed at enabling major computing centers to host grids over high-speed networks to provide a future computational infrastructure for scientific and engineering research in the 21st century. As an example of utilizing such grid computing technologies, the Center for Application Research and Development is conducting research on leading-edge, grid-enabled nanoscience and nanotechnology simulation applications, which will lead to the discovery and development of new materials and next-generation nanodevices. These two centers are collaborating to establish daily research use of a multiteraflop grid testbed infrastructure, which will be built to demonstrate the advantages of grid technologies for future applications in all areas of science and engineering. © 2005 IEEE.

Recent simulations indicate that ellipsoids can pack randomly more densely than spheres and, remarkably, for axes ratios near 1.25∶1∶0.8 can approach the densest crystal packing (fcc) of spheres, with a packing fraction of 74%. We demonstrate that such dense packings are realizable. We introduce a novel way of determining packing density for a finite sample that minimizes surface effects. We have fabricated ellipsoids and show that, in a sphere, the radial packing fraction ϕ(r) can be obtained from V(h), the volume of added fluid to fill the sphere to height h. We also obtain ϕ(r) from a magnetic resonance imaging scan. The measurements of the overall density ϕavr, ϕ(r) and the core density ϕ0=0.74±0.005 agree with simulations.

In this work, a new representation is developed for generalized hypergeometric functions of type p F p . To this end a first order vector differential equation is constructed in a way such that the derivative of the unknown vector has unit matrix coefficient. The solution vector differential equation is rewritten in the form of a series expansion. An infinite process of factor extractions and annihilations is employed to construct finally a vector differential equation that can be easily solved. Truncation of this scheme can be used to get approximations to hypergeometric functions of type p F p . A simple, yet meaningful, implementation seems to give quite promising results. Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. With the explosive growth of the World Wide Web, millions of documents are published and accessed on-line. Statistics show that a significant part of Web text information is encoded in Web images. Since Web images have special characteristics that sometimes distinguish them from other types of images, commercial OCR products often fail to recognize Web images due to their special characteristics. This paper proposes a novel Web image processing algorithm that aims to locate text areas and prepare them for OCR procedure with better results. Our methodology for text area identification has been fully integrated with an OCR engine and with an Information Extraction system. We present quantitative results for the performance of the OCR engine as well as qualitative results concerning its effects to the Information Extraction system. Experimental results obtained from a large corpus of Web images, demonstrate the efficiency of our methodology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Data exchange is very important in electrical and electronics engineering applications. The exchange needs to be reliable, error-free and adaptable to different types of software used in the related industries. In power community, IEEE common format, WSCC format, and PTI's PCI format have been used extensibly to date with almost no problem for data exchange purposes. As the industry goes under big changes, such as deregulation and use of power electronics more and more, aforementioned formats are not adequate. In this paper we present a model for exchanging power system data using eXtensibly Markup Language (XML) as the exchange base. The developed software can accept IEEE common format data as input and convert it to any other forms of data formats desired such as WSCC, PTI, HTML, or even to another form of XML.

In this paper, new inverse analysis method with FEM was developed for optical computed tomography. This inverse problem is reduced to estimate the location of a part with inhomogeneous absorption coefficient from scattered light on a surface of human body. Non-steady problem was treated by applying Laplace transformation. To reduce the computational time due to nonlinearity, we introduced a vector which is easily obtained from the location of inhomogeneity, and is also related to observed value. This vector enables us to solve the inverse problem without any FEM iterative calculation. Simple 3D example problem was solved to demonstrate the usefulness of this method.

An efficient implicit dynamic finite element method(FEM) for elastic 3D objects with uniform cross-sections was developed. In this method, the finite element mesh is generated in such a way that the object to be analyzed is at first sliced into layers with the same thickness along the generatrix and then each layer is discretized into the same pattern. This way of discretization makes the mass, viscosity, and stiffness matrices into the repetitive block tridiagonal matrices. The repetitive block tridiagonal matrix has the characteristic, that the sequence of matrices which appears in the Gaussian elimination for the repetitive block tridiagonal matrix is a rapid convergent sequence. The process of the Gaussian elimination can be terminated when the sequence converges. The rest of the sequence is not necessary to be stored. The present method can save the computational time and memory by utilizing this characteristic of the repetitive block tridiagonal matrix. A few examples of analyses including whole Hopkinson-bar analysis were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method. The present method is applicable not only to the elasto-dynamics but also to many other problems, such as thermal and electrical problems.

Weighted Eigenvalue Problem Approach To The Critical Value Determination Of Screened Coulomb Potential Systems

In this work, the radial time-independent Schrödinger equation of a screened Coulomb potential system at the zero energy limit is first converted to a weighted eigenvalue problem of an ordinary differential operator. Then, by using an appropriate coordinate transformation, the differential equation is transformed into a form whose first and second order derivative related terms become same as the Extended Jacobi Polynomials' differential equation's corresponding terms. Only difference is the appearance of a multiplicative operator which can be considered as an effective potential. Work focuses on the point whether the solution is obtained easily depending on the structure of this potential. In this direction a screened Coulomb potential with a specific rational screening function is considered. The analytical solutions for the critical values of the screening parameter and the form of the wave function at the threshold of the continous spectrum are obtained.
