Renewable energy sources have been increasingly targeted as an alternative for reducing fossil fuel emissions. This scenario requires a better understanding of energy systems' performance and limitations, notably using photovoltaic setups under diverse meteorological conditions and determining device measurement uncertainties. Accordingly, this study conducts a performance evaluation of a photovoltaic system of copper, indium, and gallium (di)selenide technology. It compares the results provided by a reference normalized equation with two interpretable artificial intelligence techniques, Fuzzy Inference System and Bayesian Networks, when temperature is also considered. In the experiments, the study found significant percentage differences between the normalization procedure and the fuzzy system on days with lower irradiation values. On the other hand, the results provided by Bayesian networks presented lower difference percentages in relation to the normalization equation values.

Candidate selection platforms have been widely used in companies that seek agility in the process of hiring. Candidates who do not meet the requirements of a job vacancy are disqualified in the first step, called screening. This stage has been automated due to the large volume of curriculum vitae (CV) of candidates per vacancy, particularly for internship vacancies. As a consequence, candidates receive little to none feedback and do not know how to improve/optimize their CVs for new applications. The goal of this paper is to realize the curriculum vitae optimization (CVO) process for internship vacancies by implementing a recommendation system that given an undergraduate student CV, it suggests the addition of relevant keywords, taking into account the student’s undergraduate course. This system is implemented based on the clustering of CVs keywords, from an internship recruitment private company database, into profile groups which are linked to internship vacancies. The experimental results showed that recommendations improved students CVs similarity (competitiveness within a specific field) from 18.83%, with 3 keywords recommendation, up to 50.67%, with 10 words. © 2023, ICST institute for Computer Sciences, Social informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

In this paper, it is presented a new modified structure of antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA). The structure is fed by a triple ridged substrate integrated waveguide (RSIW) on a single layer low-cost FR4 substrate. The ridges insertion allows a bandwidth enhancement due to the cut-off frequency decrease and consequently the miniaturization. The new structure is compared to an AVA fed by a classical SIW designed for a cut-off frequency around 4 GHz. Numerical simulations were performed and a bandwidth enhancement of 660 MHz was achieved with a gain of 2.06-7.59dBi within the frequency range.

In this paper, we propose a flexible passive RFID tag using a Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) structure for antenna gain enhancement. The tag is based on a folded dipole antenna and 8 CSRR cells in the same layer, on a polyamide substrate. Simulation results performed in the ANSYS Electronics Desktop software are presented. It has been shown that with the insertion of the metamaterial structure there is a considerable improvement in some parameters of the antenna, such as directivity, efficiency and, consequently, gain. The gain of the antenna increased, approximately, from -6.8 dB to 5.3 dB. In addition, a read range of approximately 24.21 m was obtained at the operating frequency (915 MHz) with the metamaterial-based antenna. © 2019 IEEE.

Continuous monitoring of vital signals provides relevant information about a patient health status, which is essential in situations of risk. There is a need for practical and efficient systems to obtain these parameters and the RFID technology is presented here as a solution. In this work, a passive RFID tag is developed for respiratory rate monitoring. The RFID tag is a wireless solution for the subject and provides comfort due to its flexibility. Simulations and measurements were performed. To carry out the simulations, it was necessary to characterize the dielectric materials. The principle of operation of the technology in this application is based on the variations of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) caused by the respiratory movements. As a result of the measurements performed with the tag placed on the abdomen of a person, during which forced inhalations and slow expirations were made, these variations of the RSSI could be noticed and, based on the respiratory cycles detected, it was possible to estimate the respiratory rate. © 2018 IEEE.

With the growing diffusion of the Internet of Things concept and the advances in low-power electronics, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has gained attention in various fields, from entertainment to medicine, for example. Its sensing and signal processing capability allows us to highlight this technology as one of the main solutions in reducing cost and complexity in such applications. This work presents the design and test of a flexible RFID tag operating in the American UHF frequency of 915 MHz, for human body motion detection. Through the analysis of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) variation with time and its Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) it was possible to ensure the tag's applicability. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents Koch fractal aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHz to 64 GHz), for on-chip application. This work is the continuation of the development of aperture-coupled antennas with aperture and patch element built in 2 μm-thick aluminum lying on two layers of silicon with a height of 200 μm. The use of Koch fractal allowed the development of aperture-coupled antennas of greater perimeter with more metal in the patch elements, which promoted an increase in the gain. The observed gain for Koch fractal level 2 was of 10.55 dBi, with a bandwidth of 7.23 GHz, covering the ISM 60 GHz Band, and an increase of less than 10% in total patch dimension. For Koch fractal levels 0 (square), a polarization close to circular was achieved, with an axial ratio less than 6 at resonant frequencies. © 2018 IEEE.

The applications aimed at monitoring and controlling smart homes and buildings, health, industrial environments, traffic, energy consumption, resources, and so on, are being increasingly deployed due to the advantages they provide, increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. In this context Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become a leading solution providing the appropriate mean to get and collect data and deliver it for their processing. Sensor nodes in a WSN have resource constraints, presenting low processing power and, in some cases, restrictions in power consumption. Resources availability constraints force researchers and engineers to develop proper Operating Systems (OS) aimed at low-power wireless devices, and one of the most important and in active use is the TinyOS. This paper describes an experimental analysis and evaluation which investigates relevant features and evaluates the performance (throughput, network delay, success rate, and energy consumption) of WSN under the constraint of using the low-power-consumption-aimed chosen operating system in an harsh outdoor industrial environment for with two different protocols: Active Message (AM) layer protocol and the fully 802.15.4 compliant protocol stack TKN15.4. Based on the results we conclude that TKN15.4 is better in energy consumption and success rate. On the other hand, AM protocol allows running multiple services using the same radio, but at the cost of an excessive energy consumption. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The standard IEEE 802.15.4e shows several improvements which makes it outperforming the predecessor IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A remarkable improvement is the use of multiple channels and the capability to choose the most convenient depending on the network links state. Hence, different techniques can be provisioned to dynamically select the most appropriate channel for establishing the link through an adaptive mechanism. During the contention-free periods, the Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mode is based on channel hopping while the Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME) mode uses either channel hopping or channel adaptation. In scenarios where channel diversity techniques are used for channel adaptation nodes links are established using the same channel as long as the channel quality (SNR) is high enough. In consequence to guarantee link best performance, its quality must be measured periodically to decide whether continue in the same channel of switch to a better performance one. Our investigation focuses on the analysis of the performance of three different approaches which pretend to take advantage of the multichannel capabilities of the new standard, based on the DSME protocol: CH-DSME which is based on a simple channel hopping mechanism, CA-DSME which employs channel adaptation, and a novel hybrid approach (H-DSME) which combines channel hopping and channel adaptation. This investigation shows that, in an industrial environment, the H-DSME outperforms both CH-DSME and CA-DSME approaches. In this work, the Castalia simulator was used to perform the simulations, using a reliable simulation model, which captures the characteristics of the wireless channel in industrial environments in long range basis. The analysis demonstrates that channel adaptation is better than channel hopping for unicast packets transmission, when links quality are continuously measured.
