A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is presented. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1. No excess of such events is observed above the standard model background prediction. In the context of a specific model with one universal extra dimension with compactification radius R and gravity-induced decays, values of 1/R<729 GeV are excluded at 95% C. L., providing the most sensitive limit on this model to date.

A New Approach to Graph Recognition and Applications to Distance-Hereditary Graphs

Algorithms used in data mining and bioinformatics have to deal with huge amount of data efficiently. In many applications, the data are supposed to have explicit or implicit structures. To develop efficient algorithms for such data, we have to propose possible structure models and test if the models are feasible. Hence, it is important to make a compact model for structured data, and enumerate all instances efficiently. There are few graph classes besides trees that can be used for a model. In this paper, we investigate distance-hereditary graphs. This class of graphs consists of isometric graphs and hence contains trees and cographs. First, a canonical and compact tree representation of the class is proposed. The tree representation can be constructed in linear time by using prefix trees. Usually, prefix trees are used to maintain a set of strings. In our algorithm, the prefix trees are used to maintain the neighborhood of vertices, which is a new approach unlike the lexicographically breadth-first search used in other studies. Based on the canonical tree representation, efficient algorithms for the distance-hereditary graphs are proposed, including linear time algorithms for graph recognition and graph isomorphism and an efficient enumeration algorithm. An efficient coding for the tree representation is also presented; it requires [3.59n] bits for a distance-hereditary graph of n vertices and 3n bits for a cograph. The results of coding improve previously known upper bounds （both are 2^O（nlogn）） of the number of distance-hereditary graphs and cographs to 2^[3.59n] and 2^3n, respectively.

We present the conceptual basis and the initial planning for an open source management architecture for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Although there is an abundance of open source tools serving the administrative needs of WSN deployments, there is a lack of tools or platforms for high level integrated WSN management. This is because of a variety of factors, including the lack of open source management tools, the immaturity of tools that offer manageability for WSNs, the limited high level management capabilities of sensor devices and architectures, and the lack of standardization. The current work is, to our knowledge, the first effort to conceptualize, formalize and design a remote, integrated management platform for the support of WSN research laboratories. The platform is based on the integration and extension of two innovative platforms: jWebDust, a WSN operation and management platform, and OpenRSM, an open source integrated remote systems and network management platform. The proposed system architecture can support several levels of integration (infrastructure management, functionality integration, firmware management), corresponding to different use-cases and application settings.

News portals based on the RSS protocol are becoming nowadays one of the dominant ways that Internet users follow in order to locate the information they are looking for. Search engines, which operate at the back-end of a big portion of these web sites, receive millions of queries per day on any and every walk of web life. While these queries are submitted by thousands of unrelated users, studies have shown that small sets of popular queries account for a significant fraction of the query stream. A second truth has to do with the high frequency that a particular user tends to submit the same or highly relative search requests to the engine. By combining these facts, in this paper, we design and analyze the caching algorithm deployed in our personalized RSS portal, a web-based mechanism for the retrieval, processing and presentation in a personalized view of articles and RSS feeds collected from major Internet news portals. By using moderate amounts of memory and little computational overhead, we achieve to cache query results in the server, both for personalized and non-personalized user searches. Our caching algorithm operates not in a stand-alone manner but it co-operates and binds with the rest of the modules of our Portal in order to accomplish maximum integration with the system. © 2009 IADIS.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the operation of sensor nodes has to rely on a limited supply of energy (such as batteries). To support long lifetime operation of WSNs, an energy-efficient way of sensor deployment and operation of the WSNs is necessary. A new controlled layer deployment (CLD) protocol to guarantee coverage and energy efficiency for a sensor network is proposed. CLD outperforms previous similar protocols in that it can achieve the same performances and guarantee full area coverage and connection using a smaller number of sensors. It can also ameliorate the 'cascading problem' that reduces the whole network lifetime. Finally, analysis and simulation results show that CLD can use fewer sensor nodes for coverage and also increases the lifetime of the sensor network when compared with the probing environment and adapting sleeping (PEAS) protocol. © 2009 The Institution of engineering and Technology.

Fitness landscape analysis in evolutionary algorithms is commonly done on problems represented as bit strings with Hamming distance based random walks on the landscape. In this study, we aim to do a preliminary fitness landscape analysis of the differential evolution algorithm, which works on continuous search spaces. To the authors' best knowledge, no such fitness landscape analysis has been conducted in literature on continuous problems where search is performed through differential evolution. To achieve this aim, we first propose a suitable neighborhood definition through which a vector-based random walk on the landscape is possible. Then we use this neighborhood definition to conduct a fitness distance correlation and a correlation length analysis on a series of benchmark functions. ©2009 IEEE.

Semantic wikis have been regarded as a collaborative knowledge management system which can provide an efficient framework to foster social interactions and collaborations between online people synchronously. However, as such semantic wiki systems allow users to exploit their own semantics for describing their knowledge, there are sometime conflicts between knowledge (or information) published by them. Thereby, the goal of this work is i) to automatically detect such conflicts by monitoring the user semantics and ii) to reasonably determine consensus choice converged by analyzing social collaborations. In this paper, we want to note major patterns of knowledge dynamics and conflicts through the social interactions on semantic wikis. The consensus choice is effectively selected to be recommended for better understandability about the knowledge conflicts. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a framework that integrates deployment, execution, and notification mechanisms for running surveillance monitoring applications on multi-purpose grids. The proposed framework employs statistical analysis over historical data along with selfadaptive mechanisms to allocate efficiently task to resources. This framework has been deployed on a set of computational resources pertaining to the Pacific Rim Applications and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) infrastructure. © 2009 IEEE.

Two pandemic simulation approaches are known: the MAS and the SEIR. The MAS can deal with detailed simulations under a variety of initial and boundary conditions with standard social network models;however, the computing cost is high. The SEIR can quickly deal with simulations for homogeneous populations with simultaneous ordinary differential equations and a few parameters;however, it lacks versatility in its use. We propose a new method, the MADE, combining these two methods, such that we use the MAS in the early stage in a simulation to determine the parameters that can be used in the SEIR, and then use the SEIR in the subsequent stage. With this method, we may deal with pandemic simulations for real social structures with lower computing costs. Using this new model, we show the swine influenza A (H1N1) simulation results as well as the actual observed cases.
