Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data.

A web-based solution for viewing large-sized microscopic images

This paper demonstrates a pure web-based solution enabling the presentation of scanned pathologic microscopic images on the web. For each slide, an entire specimen is scanned, and a high-resolution digital image (in the order of giga-pixels) is reconstructed. These huge images are then tiled into many 256×∈256-pixel blocks with different resolutions, and information about the blocks of each scanned slide is included in an extensible markup language metafile. Based on the data, a virtual microscopy system is created for viewing the scanned pathologic slides on web. The functionalities (changing viewing resolution, location adjustment, and multimedia annotation presentation) of our virtual slide viewing system are accomplished using pure hypertext markup language (HTML) and JavaScript. We show that there is no need to add plug-in components to browsers in order to handle virtual slides on the web. In a heterogeneous healthcare environment, methods using pure HTML and JavaScript to deal with pathologic content are more appropriate than using proprietary technologies supported only by specific browsers. © 2008 Society for Imaging informatics in Medicine.

This paper proposes a business model for the optimal exploitation of the currently developing broadband metropolitan area networks in Greece. Having recorded and examined relevant international practices, we describe in detail the way that these networks should be managed, operated, maintained and expanded. Taking into consideration that these infrastructures will widely alter the broadband map of Greece, that Greece has currently one of the lowest broadband penetration percentages in Europe and that the proper exploitation strategy of the networks to be deployed could boost the demand for broadband connections and applications, the application of the optimal business model appears to be of vital importance. We describe the proposed business model in detail, including ways for expanding the broadband infrastructures, as well as tackling of viability issues regarding the authority responsible for managing the broadband metropolitan networks. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880 nb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

In this study, e-government studies in Turkey have been observed and analyzed in details. To move e-government application for overall Turkey, there might be some problems to use and integrate current applications of public institutions. In this study, these problems have been investigated and solutions have been proposed. E-government applications of Portugal, United States, and Singapore have been observed and compared with studies in Turkey. Services which have been done by public institutions via their web sites have been investigated in details and how they can be integrated was discussed and some proposals have been given to establish the e-government successfully as soon as possible. © 2009 IADIS.

Let H_n be the class of vertex-rooted unlabeled trees with n vertices, and denote by H_n a tree that is drawn uniformly at random from this set. In this work we study the number deg_k (H_n) of vertices of degree k in H_n. In particular, for k = O ((frac(log n, log log n))^{1 / 2}) we show exponential-type bounds for the probability that deg_k (H_n) deviates from its expectation. On the technical side, our proofs are based on the analysis of a randomized algorithm that generates unlabeled trees in the so-called Boltzmann model. The analysis of such algorithms is quite well-understood for classes of labeled graphs. Comparable algorithms for unlabeled classes are unfortunately much more complex. We demonstrate in this work that they can be analyzed very precisely for classes of unlabeled graphs as well. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the last few years, the number of projects involving historical reconstruction has increased significantly. Recent technologies have proven a powerful tool for a better understanding of our cultural heritage through which to attain a glimpse of the environments in which our ancestors lived. However, to accomplish such a purpose, these reconstructions should be presented to us as they may really have been perceived by a local inhabitant, according to the illumination and materials used back then and, equally important, the characteristics of the human visual system. The human visual system has a remarkable ability to adjust itself to almost all everyday scenarios. This is particularly evident in extreme lighting conditions, such as bright light or dark environments. However, a major portion of the visible spectra captured by our visual system cannot be represented in most display devices. High dynamic range imagery is a field of research which is developing techniques to correct such inaccuracies. This new viewing paradigm is perfectly suited for archaeological interpretation, since its high contrast and chromaticity can present us with an enhanced viewing experience, closer to what an inhabitant of that era may have seen. In this article we present a case study of the reconstruction of a Roman site. We generate high dynamic range images of mosaics and frescoes from one of the most impressive monuments in the ruins of Conimbriga, Portugal, an ancient city of the Roman Empire. To achieve the requisite level of precision, in addition to having a precise geometric 3D model, it is crucial to integrate in the virtual simulation authentic physical data of the light used in the period under consideration. Therefore, in order to create a realistic physical-based environment, we use in our lighting simulations real data obtained from simulated Roman luminaries of that time. © 2009 ACM.

The experiments aimed to compare data driven models for the valuation of residential premises were conducted using KEEL (Knowledge Extraction based on Evolutionary Learning) system. Twelve different regression algorithms were applied to an actual data set derived from the cadastral system and the registry of real estate transactions. The 10-fold cross validation and statistical tests were applied. The lowest values of MSE provided models constructed and optimized by means of support vector machine, artificial neural network, decision trees for regression and quadratic regression, however differences between them were not statistically significant. Worse performance revealed algorithms employing evolutionary fuzzy rule learning. The experiments confirmed the usefulness of KEEL as a powerful tool with its numerous evolutionary algorithms together with classical learning approaches to carry out laborious investigation on a practical problem in a relatively short time.

Face recognition under variable lighting conditions is recognized as one of the most problematic are of the recognition domain by various authors. Previous work suggested that image variations caused by parameters such as illumination, can be modeled by low dimensional subspaces. In this work, we propose a new scheme for recognition under a single variation. Using a generic manifold learning technique like LPP, we are able to construct coordinate systems for the underlying sub space with the help of an optimization step.
