Genetic algorithm based data controlling method using IoT enabled WSNs

Internet of Things (IoT) enabled Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is not only constitute an encouraging research domain but also represent a promising industrial trend that permits the development of various IoT-based applications. These applications span a wide range from industry to education, and from military to agriculture. The IoT device plays a significant role in various IoT-based networks, and the functioning of such network depends upon the battery power. Once the devices are deployed in the hostile environments, replacing batteries becomes impractical. Despite a plethora of research addressing this challenge, IoT networks still face issues. In this paper, a genetic algorithm based data monitoring and controlling method using IoT enabled WSNs is proposed by using movable sinks in IoT enabled HWSNs (OptiGeA). The OptiGeA protocol is designed for the election of cluster heads (CHs) by incorporating factors such as density, distance, energy and heterogeneous node capacity into its fitness function. The investigation of OptiGeA is conducted with single sink, multiple static sinks and multiple movable sinks provide an unbiased comparative assessment. The novel deployment technique and multiple mobile sinks approaches are proposed to reduce the transmission distance between the sink and CH during system operation and address hotspot issue. It is evident that the OptiGeA protocol shows an increment of 10.44% compared to the GAOC, whereas with the inclusion of DDC process the OptiGeA-DDC protocol demonstrates a remarkable increase of 48.33% compared to MS-GAOC. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Data collection using mobile sink(s) has proven to reduce energy consumption and enhance the network lifetime of wireless sensor networks. Generally speaking, a mobile sink (MS) traverses the network region, sojourning at rendezvous points (RPs) and gathering data there from nearby sensor nodes (SNs). However, determining the optimal number and location of RPs is a hard problem. Metaheuristic algorithms are well suited to solve such kind of problems. In this paper, we propose a tour planning scheme for the MS by a combined approach that uses K-means clustering and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The proposed scheme first determines a set of near-optimal RPs and then uses them to schedule the tour of the MS. Herein, the energy consumption of the overall scheme is reduced due to the low computational cost of the proposed algorithm. At last, the proposed scheme is shown to outperform the comparative algorithms through simulation. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

A machine learning approach for skin lesion classification on iOS: implementing and optimizing a convolutional transfer learning model with Create ML

The integration of machine learning (ML) into mobile applications presents unique challenges, particularly in resource-constrained environments such as iOS devices. Skin lesion classification is a critical task in dermatology, where accurate and efficient diagnostic tools can significantly aid in early detection of malignant lesions. This study aims to implement a machine learning-based iOS mobile application and develop a binary classification model for skin lesion images to determine whether a lesion is malignant. The research utilized Create ML to develop a convolutional neural network optimized for iOS, employing a transfer learning approach. A logistic regression model was cascaded with the convolutional neural network N to enhance classification accuracy. The model's performance was assessed through various validation metrics, ensuring its robustness and efficiency within the constraints of mobile hardware. A curated dataset from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration archive was used for training and testing. The model achieved an accuracy of 92%, a precision of 90%, a recall of 93%, and an F1-score of 91% in classifying skin lesions. These metrics validate the model's efficacy in identifying malignant lesions. Data curation involved collecting, labeling, and preparing a dataset from publicly available sources, ensuring the inclusion of diagnostically relevant features. The final model was integrated into an iOS application using Core ML and Vision frameworks. The developed application demonstrates reliable performance in classifying skin lesions with high accuracy on iOS devices. The inclusion of comprehensive performance metrics justifies the efficacy of the proposed approach. Future work will explore enhancements in model architecture and object detection capabilities to further improve diagnostic precision and application usability. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Word Sense Disambiguation for Indic Language using Bi-LSTM

In the enormous field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), deciphering the intended significance of a word among a multitude of possibilities is referred to as word sense disambiguation. This process is essential for accurately understanding the refinements of language within a specific context. The various collection of government services supports the everyday lives of Indian citizens. Some of the initiatives that are available for use are the National e-Governance Plan, UMANG, Bharat Bill Payment System, e-Panchayat, police clearance, and e-Sign. However, the effectiveness of these services depends on NLP tasks that are customized for Indian languages, requiring skilled management of linguistic uncertainties. Hindi and its equivalents lack the linguistic resources that are abundant in English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, and Russian. To tackle this challenge, this article introduces a fresh approach to resolving the ambiguity of Hindi words. By combining the capabilities of word embedding Word2Vec or FastText with the Bi-Directional LSTM neural network, it carefully analyzes Hindi sentences to determine the most contextually appropriate meaning. The effectiveness of this approach is highlighted by the remarkable F1 score of 70.03% achieved in experimental findings. This significant improvement over previous models confirms the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in addressing the intrinsic language ambiguities found in Indic languages. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

High utility itemset mining (HUIM) is a well-known pattern mining technique. It considers the utility of the items that leads to finding high profit patterns which are more useful for real conditions. Handling large and complex dataset are the major challenges in HUIM. The main problem here is the exponential time complexity. Literature review shows multi-core approaches to solve this problem by parallelising the tasks, but it is limited to single machine resources and also needs a novel strategy. To address this problem, we proposed new strategies namely distributed computing (DC-PLB) and shared memory (SM-PLB)-based utility list buffer miner with parallel frameworks (PLB). It utilises cluster nodes to parallelise and distribute the tasks efficiently. Thorough experiments with results proved that the proposed frameworks achieved better runtime (448 s) in dense datasets compared to the existing PLB (2,237 s). It has effectively addressed the challenges of handing large and complex datasets. © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Isomorphic Classification of First Degree Cellular Automata

This paper explores the concept of isomorphism in cellular automata (CAs), focusing on identifying and understanding isomorphic relationships between distinct CAs. A cellular automaton (CA) is said to be isomorphic to another CA if the configuration transition diagrams of the two CAs are identical. To illustrate how isomorphism entails the preservation of structural properties while allowing for variations in state representations, we exhaustively explore the isomorphic reversible rules in the first degree CAs (FDCAs), that is, the simple three-neighborhood CAs represented by eight parameters. The experimental study includes reversible FDCAs for states two to 10 with cell lengths of four to seven under the null boundary condition and states two to seven with cell lengths of four to seven under the periodic boundary condition. Given a CA, we also provide two synthesis methods for identifying the set of CAs that are isomorphic to it. The first method operates by permuting the states of a group of CA cell locations, whereas the second method involves exchanging cells at various points. We demonstrate that, depending on the range of exchanged cell positions, the isomorphic CAs produced in this way may have a bigger neighborhood than the input CA. Finally, we provide an exhaustive classification of the elementary CAs (ECAs) using the first synthesis method and compare it with existing results. © 2025, Complex Systems Publications, Inc. This study addresses the challenge of selecting research topics for undergraduate students, focusing on computer science, by evaluating a recommendation model based on the k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm (kNN). The objective is to enhance the accuracy of research topic recommendations in the presence of imbalanced data. The methodology involves data cleaning, transformation, and correlation-based feature selection, with a particular focus on addressing missing values and optimizing the feature set. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) is employed to balance the dataset. The model development includes a comprehensive analysis of various k values, leading to the identification of k=3 with Manhattan distance as the optimal configuration, achieving an accuracy of 82%. The experiment explores different training data proportions, revealing that a 90:10 ratio yields the highest accuracy. This study incorporates a Grid Search technique for hyperparameter tuning, highlighting the importance of selecting appropriate distance metrics and nearest neighbor values. The system implementation is presented with user and administrator interfaces. Findings indicate varying model performance across research categories, emphasizing the need for category-specific evaluation metrics. The study concludes with a discussion on the significance of the results, which contribute to the improvement of research topic recommendation systems for students through the integration of advanced machine learning techniques. © 2024 by the authors.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are often directly authenticated by the gateways within the network. In complex and large systems, IoT devices may be connected to the gateway through another device in the network. In such a scenario, new device should be authenticated with the gateway through the intermediate device. To address this issue, an authentication process is proposed in this paper for IoT-enabled healthcare systems. This approach performs a privacy-preserving mutual authentication between the gateway and an IoT device through intermediate devices, which are already authenticated by the gateway. The proposed approach relies on the session key established during gateway-intermediate device authentication. To emphasizes lightweight and efficient system, the proposed approach employs lightweight cryptographic operations, such as XOR, concatenation, and hash functions within IoT networks. This approach goes beyond the traditional device-to-device authentication, allowing authentication to propagate across multiple devices or nodes in the network. The proposed work establishes a secure session between an authorized device and a gateway, preventing unauthorized devices from accessing healthcare systems. The security of the protocol is validated through a thorough analysis using the AVISPA tool, and its performance is evaluated against existing schemes, demonstrating significantly lower communication and computation costs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In the rapidly evolving technology landscape, smart homes are becoming increasingly common, driven by the demand for integrated management of information and services. However, despite advancements, managing electricity consumption efficiently remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the lack of detailed usage data and the complexity of predicting device behavior. This study addresses these challenges by utilizing the DinRail Cerberus meter for granular data collection on household electricity use and applying the DBSCAN clustering algorithm for unsupervised learning. Our research aims to develop a forecasting system that accurately discerns the operational status of household devices-active or inactive-based on energy consumption patterns. This innovative approach promises to revolutionize energy management in smart homes, offering detailed insights into device usage that facilitate more informed decisions for efficient electricity consumption. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2024.

Flight delays pose significant challenges to the aviation industry, leading to increased operational costs and passenger dissatisfaction. This paper explores the use of machine learning (ML) and big data analytics to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of flight delay predictions. Utilizing data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) covering the period from 2018 to 2022, we analyze critical factors influencing delays and develop predictive models employing techniques such as Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Machines, Decision Trees, and k-Nearest Neighbors. Our analysis demonstrates that these ML techniques significantly outperform traditional models, improving the accuracy of delay predictions and thereby supporting airlines in optimizing operational efficiency and enhancing passenger satisfaction. The paper also discusses the practical implementation of these findings in real-time airline operations and outlines future research directions to further improve predictive accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
