Visual impairment is characterized by the loss of vision, encompassing both complete blindness and partial vision loss. Studies reveal a notable prevalence of visual impairment among school-aged children. The significance of colors in acquiring and discerning visual information is crucial, aiding children in effectively perceiving and comprehending their surroundings. This study presents an Internet of Things (IoT) system designed for teaching colors to visually impaired children. The system achieved an accuracy rate surpassing 77.8%, and it is operated effectively regardless of surrounding lighting conditions. Given that the target users of the system are visually impaired children, this research was conducted in close alignment with Human-computer Interaction (HCI) principles. © 2024 IEEE.

When performing inference on sensor data, edge video analytics applications may not always need high-fidelity data, since important information may not appear all the time. Consequently, each edge AI application's bandwidth demand is highly dynamic. Thus, a shared edge system should dynamically allocate more bandwidth to the applications in need to reach high accuracy at each moment. However, previous bandwidth allocators are ill-suited because they are agnostic to the timevarying impact of bandwidth on each application's *** short paper explores a new accuracy-driven approach to bandwidth allocation, which periodically re-allocates bandwidth across edge AI applications based on the sensitivity of each application's accuracy to its bandwidth share. To examine its practical benefit and technical challenges, we present a concrete accuracy-driven bandwidth allocator called ConciERGE, which exposes a simple yet efficient interface to estimate each application's sensitivity to a small change in its bandwidth *** run CONCIERGE on state-of-the-art video-analytics applications with real video streams and show its early promise in greatly improving the inference accuracy of video analytics. © 2024 IEEE.

Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis is a widely used medical procedure for the early diagnosis of various brain diseases. Accurate pathology identification during the brain MRI analysis procedure is crucial as misdiagnoses or missed findings can greatly affect a patient's treatment and long-term prediction. With the recent advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the medical field, researchers have approached various techniques to detect brain diseases using AI. Although AI models exhibit high accuracy, they suffer from a lack of transparency and interpretability, paving the way for the development of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods in brain disease diagnosis. Image segmentation, machine learning, deep learning and XAI are important for assisting the diagnostic procedure. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of various existing techniques in brain disease detection using MRI is presented, starting with image segmentation techniques, followed by classification techniques, and finally, XAI techniques. In conclusion, the paper identifies a critical need for further research on XAI integration to advance brain disease detection. © 2024 IEEE.

Despite growing interest in mobile games for older adults, there is limited exploration of older adults’ gaming behaviors, perceptions, and experiences as they engage with casual puzzle games over a period of time. To address this, we conducted a 9-month study with 20 older adults, examining training needs, in-situ experiences, and preferences. Participants were trained on tablet PCs and ten selected games. During the study, participants documented their experiences and attended technology workshops. Gaming behaviors were logged and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, revealing patterns and statistically signifcant diferences in play frequency and duration over the course of the study. Thematic analysis identifed facilitators and barriers to engagement such as customization, co-play experiences, and health issues. Based on these fndings, we recommend incorporating educational elements, enhancing user control, leveraging identity and nostalgia, supporting social interactions, designing for tangible interaction, and emphasizing the importance of learning aids. Future research should test the efectiveness of these recommendations in increasing older adults’ engagement with casual games. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In today’s Internet-centric world, two main challenges have arisen regarding data exploration: a) the privacy of sensitive data and b) the need for users to have an efficient way to manage their data. Cloud computing offers a cost-effective way towards direct data storage and access, which can function as a catalyst to modernize and update legacy systems. Although cloud computing provides efficient dynamic storage space, data security remains a concern. To this end, we propose a novel design and implementation of an application that enables secure storage of personal data in the cloud through a complete homomorphic encryption system. The application is named "SHeMed", which stands for Secure Homomorphic encryption on Medical cloud data. We have concentrated on the secure storage of medical data for breast cancer patients to ensure patients’ data privacy and prevent unauthorized access. With the introduction of homomorphic encryption in the core of this application, we achieve four significant milestones regarding the secure "sealing" of data privacy: a) the user does not share the private key with the cloud provider, b) the user can proceed with implementing mathematical operations on encrypted data, c) cloud can be easily scaled and provide a convenient way to store data, d) after the implementation of mathematical operations, the new processed data may be shared with other users, mainly doctors, without providing the original ones. Our design implies that our users will need to retrieve their patient’s data just once. In this paper, we present a case study of our application that utilizes homomorphic encryption to eliminate the burden of preserving data confidentiality in the cloud and enable a convenient analysis of medical data through computations on encrypted data. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A distributed B+Tree indexing method for processing range queries over streaming data

A data stream exhibits as a massive unbounded sequence of data elements continuously generated at a high rate. Stream databases raise new challenges for query processing due to both the streaming nature of data which constantly changes over time and the wider range of queries submitted by the user when compared with the traditional databases. In this paper, we propose a system architecture which includes components for both distributed indexing of streaming data and distributed processing of range queries on streaming data. Instead of creating a large and centralized B+Tree index structure, we create a set of small B+Tree indexes in such a way that a B+Tree index can be created for every partition of streaming data. We also design a distributed range search algorithm which can be used by each individual machine inside a Spark cluster to independently process range queries on each partition of streaming data. By exploiting the proposed system architecture, the process of indexing of streaming data and the process of querying over streaming data can be performed in a distributed and parallel manner. By performing several experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed indexing method is scalable and efficient for processing range queries on streaming data compared to the existing centralized B+Tree indexing methods and therefore, it can be used for applications involving data streams with a large volume of data elements and a large number of range queries. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

Pharmacotherapy is fundamental knowledge within the medical domain, specifically concerning the utilization of drugs or drug therapy for treating diseases or health disorders. Representation of knowledge from pharmacotherapy is needed to deepen scientific knowledge in that domain. Ontology is an approach in the domain of computer science that can be used to represent knowledge. Ontology has been widely used to represent knowledge in the medical domain. However, the modeling that is done is only focused on the triplet relationship concept between two class or two entities. Even though the knowledge that comes from Pharmacotherapy material is very complex. Therefore, this research used a new ontology model called knowledge ontology to represent information from pharmacotherapy materials. This study uses a dataset from e-book about pharmacotherapy. In this experiment, a total of 200 sentences were represented in knowledge ontology. The results of the representation are then evaluated by Pharmacotherapy's experts. Based on the experiments that have been carried out, it is known that the proposed ontology model can be used to represent information in the Pharmacotherapy with a testing accuracy of 95%. The results of this study can serve as a valuable resource for students in the field of pharmaceuticals, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of pharmacotherapy. © 2023 IEEE.

The synthesis of digital twin (DT) technology into smart grid systems has emerged as a promising approach for enhancing operational efficiency, reliability, and resilience in en-ergy management. DTs offer a virtual representation of physical assets and processes, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, optimization, and control. This survey paper provides an overview of the recent advances in designing DTs to upgrade the smart grid. We mainly focus on aspects of DT concept, DT empowered economic dispatch, DT empowered prediction and diagnosis, and DT empowered frequency and voltage regulations. Finally, we pinpoint potential challenges and conclude this paper. © 2024 IEEE.

The Internet has become an essential tool for people in the modern world. Humans, like all living organisms, have essential requirements for survival. These include access to atmospheric oxygen, potable water, protective shelter, and sustenance. The constant flux of the world is making our existence less complicated. A significant portion of the population utilizes online food ordering services to have meals delivered to their residences. Although there are numerous methods for ordering food, customers sometimes experience disappointment with the food they receive. Our endeavor was to establish a model that could determine if food is of good or poor quality. We compiled an extensive dataset of over 1484 online reviews from prominent food ordering platforms, including Food Panda and HungryNaki. Leveraging the collected data, a rigorous assessment of various deep learning and machine learning techniques was performed to determine the most accurate approach for predicting food quality. Out of all the algorithms evaluated, logistic regression emerged as the most accurate, achieving an impressive 90.91% accuracy. The review offers valuable insights that will guide the user in deciding whether or not to order the food. © 2024 IEEE.

DocFlow: A Visual Analytics System for Question-Based Document Retrieval and Categorization

A systematic review (SR) is essential with up-to-date research evidence to support clinical decisions and practices. However, the growing literature volume makes it challenging for SR reviewers and clinicians to discover useful information efficiently. Many human-in-the-loop information retrieval approaches (HIR) have been proposed to rank documents semantically similar to users' queries and provide interactive visualizations to facilitate document retrieval. Given that the queries are mainly composed of keywords and keyphrases retrieving documents that are semantically similar to a query does not necessarily respond to the clinician's need. Clinicians still have to review many documents to find the solution. The problem motivates us to develop a visual analytics system, DocFlow, to facilitate information-seeking. One of the features of our DocFlow is accepting natural language questions. The detailed description enables retrieving documents that can answer users' questions. Additionally, clinicians often categorize documents based on their backgrounds and with different purposes (e.g., populations, treatments). Since the criteria are unknown and cannot be pre-defined in advance, existing methods can only achieve categorization by considering the entire information in documents. In contrast, by locating answers in each document, our DocFlow can intelligently categorize documents based on users' questions. The second feature of our DocFlow is a flexible interface where users can arrange a sequence of questions to customize their rules for document retrieval and categorization. The two features of this visual analytics system support a flexible information-seeking process. The case studies and the feedback from domain experts demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of our DocFlow. © 1995-2012 IEEE.
