Video Anomaly Detection (VAD) aims to automatically analyze spatiotemporal patterns in surveillance videos collected from open spaces to detect anomalous events that may cause harm without physical contact. However, vision-based surveillance systems such as closed-circuit television often capture personally identifiable information. The lack of transparency and interpretability in video transmission and usage raises public concerns about privacy and ethics, limiting the real-world application of VAD. Recently, researchers have focused on privacy concerns in VAD by conducting systematic studies from various perspectives including data, features, and systems, making Privacy-Preserving Video Anomaly Detection (P2VAD) a hotspot in the AI community. However, current research in P2VAD is fragmented, and prior reviews have mostly focused on methods using RGB sequences, overlooking privacy leakage and appearance bias considerations. To address this gap, this article systematically reviews the progress of P2VAD for the first time, defining its scope and providing an intuitive taxonomy. We outline the basic assumptions, learning frameworks, and optimization objectives of various approaches, analyzing their strengths, weaknesses, and potential correlations. Additionally, we provide open access to research resources such as benchmark datasets and available code. Finally, we discuss key challenges and future opportunities from the perspectives of AI development and P2VAD deployment, aiming to guide future work in the field. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Social Bots: Detection and Challenges

While social media are a key source of data for computational social science, their ease of manipulation by malicious actors threatens the integrity of online information exchanges and their analysis. In this Chapter, we focus on malicious social bots, a prominent vehicle for such manipulation. We start by discussing recent studies about the presence and actions of social bots in various online discussions to show their real-world implications and the need for detection methods. Then we discuss the challenges of bot detection methods and use Botometer, a publicly available bot detection tool, as a case study to describe recent developments in this area. A Self-Supervised Algorithm for Denoising Photoplethysmography Signals for Heart Rate Estimation from Wearables

Smart watches and other wearable devices are equipped with photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors for monitoring heart rate and other aspects of cardiovascular health. However, PPG signals collected from such devices are susceptible to corruption from noise and motion artifacts, which cause errors in heart rate estimation. Typical denoising approaches filter or reconstruct the signal in ways that eliminate much of the morphological information, even from the clean parts of the signal that would be useful to preserve. In this work, we develop an algorithm for denoising PPG signals that reconstructs the corrupted parts of the signal, while preserving the clean parts of the PPG signal. Our novel framework relies on self-supervised training, where we leverage a large database of clean PPG signals to train a denoising autoencoder. As we show, our reconstructed signals provide better estimates of heart rate from PPG signals than the leading heart rate estimation methods. Further experiments show significant improvement in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) estimation from PPG signals using our algorithm. We conclude that our algorithm denoises PPG signals in a way that can improve downstream analysis of many different health metrics from wearable devices. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Given the potential of machine learning algorithms in revolutionizing the bioengineering field, this paper examined and summarized the literature related to artificial intelligence (AI) in the bioprocessing field. Natural language processing (NLP) was employed to explore the direction of the research domain. All the papers from 2013 to 2022 with specific keywords of bioprocessing using AI were extracted from Scopus and grouped into two five-year periods of 2013-to-2017 and 2018-to-2022, where the past and recent research directions were compared. Based on this procedure, selected sample papers from recent five years were subjected to further review and analysis. The result shows that 50% of the publications in the past five-year focused on topics related to hybrid models, ANN, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, and biorefinery. The summarization and analysis of the outcome indicated that implementing AI could improve the design and process engineering strategies in bioprocessing fields. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Reduced-Reference Quality Assessment of Point Clouds via Content-Oriented Saliency Projection

Many dense 3D point clouds have been exploited to represent visual objects instead of traditional images or videos. To evaluate the perceptual quality of various point clouds, in this letter, we propose a novel and efficient Reduced-Reference quality metric for point clouds, which is based on Content-oriented sAliency Projection (RR-CAP). Specifically, we make the first attempt to simplify reference and distorted point clouds into projected saliency maps with a downsampling operation. Through this process, we tackle the issue of transmitting large-volume original point clouds to user-ends for quality assessment. Then, motivated by the characteristics of the human visual system (HVS), the objective quality scores of distorted point clouds are produced by combining content-oriented similarity and statistical correlation measurements. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on SJTU-PCQA and WPC databases. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms existing reduced-reference and no-reference quality metrics, and significantly reduces the performance gap between state-of-the-art full-reference quality assessment methods. Optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based elastography techniques, such as optical palpation, have shown promise for breast tumor margin assessment. However, the high cost and bulk of OCT systems may limit their clinical feasibility. Here, we present a wireless optical palpation probe utilizing stereoscopic cameras, offering a cost-effective and portable alternative. This stereoscopic optical palpation (SOP) probe measures the deformation of a silicone layer embedded with phosphorescent microparticles. Under UV illumination, these particles emit visible light, allowing the cameras to capture 2D strain images of the layer when compressed against the tissue. These strain images are then converted into stress maps based on the pre-characterized mechanical properties of the silicone layer. The probe is constructed with a 3D-printed case, housing the cameras, a Wi-Fi transceiver, and a rechargeable battery. Real-time video feeds are transmitted to a laptop for stress image processing. We demonstrated the SOP probe on silicone inclusion phantoms, identifying the location of embedded stiff silicone inclusions based on elevated stress measurements caused by increased mechanical contrast. The SOP probe offers a compact, cost-effective solution for real-time breast tumor margin assessment on excised specimens and also holds potential for in vivo detection of residual tumor in the surgical cavity. The low cost, portability, and accessibility of the probe make it suitable for widespread application, including in resource-limited settings. Future work will focus on enhancing measurement accuracy and estimating tissue elasticity to further improve clinical utility. © 2025 SPIE.

Fine-Grained Sports, Yoga, and Dance Postures Recognition: A Benchmark Analysis

Human body-pose estimation is a complex problem in computer vision. Recent research interests have been widened specifically on the Sports, Yoga, and Dance (SYD) postures for maintaining health conditions. The SYD pose categories are regarded as a fine-grained image classification task due to the complex movement of body parts. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have attained significantly improved performance in solving various human body-pose estimation problems. Though decent progress has been achieved in yoga postures recognition using deep learning techniques, fine-grained sports, and dance recognition necessitates ample research attention. However, no benchmark public image dataset with sufficient inter-class and intra-class variations is available yet to address sports and dance postures classification. To solve this limitation, we have proposed two image datasets, one for 102 sport categories and another for 12 dance styles. Two public datasets, Yoga-82 which contains 82 classes and Yoga-107 represents 107 classes are collected for yoga postures. These four SYD datasets are experimented with the proposed deep model, SYD-Net, which integrates a patch-based attention (PbA) mechanism on top of standard backbone CNNs. The PbA module leverages the self-attention mechanism that learns contextual information from a set of uniform and multi-scale patches and emphasizes discriminative features to understand the semantic correlation among patches. Moreover, random erasing data augmentation is applied to improve performance. The proposed SYD-Net has achieved state-of-the-art accuracy on Yoga-82 using five base CNNs. autism spectrum disorder is known as a neurodevelopmental disorder with sensory problems. Many infected adults die frequently due to the psychological conditions they live in. Machine learning helps doctors detect cases of autism spectrum disorders in adults. It has proven very successful in this field. In this study, after pre-processing and solving the data class imbalance problem the data we proposed to use MCDM methods to know prioritization and the best method to diagnose autism between four algorithms (SVM, Random Forest, Neural Network, and KNN), after obtaining the classification results we utilized AHP method to assign weights to each classification performance metrics based on expert assessment then he used both the obtained weights and the classification results to enter them into the VIKOR method to make a decision based on the weighted table where we would get the ranking of the algorithms. The random Forest method scores the best in this classification for diagnosing autism, with an accuracy rate of 0.9957 and sensitivity 0.9841.

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS_(2)on charge density waves(CDWs)is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy(STM,STS),angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy(ARPES),and density functional theory(DFT).We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to a single CDW site,with a single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant,leading to band-bending and affecting multiple neighboring *** only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging,all defects are easily resolved in STS *** results indicate modulation of the Mott band gap commensurate with the CDW and breaking of the three-fold symmetry of electronic *** calculations(with included Coulomb interactions)are used to investigate the electronic structure,focusing on both sulfur vacancy and oxygen-sulfur *** sulfur vacancy system,characterized with a metallic behavior,is identified as the origin of one of the experimentally observed ***,the effect of oxidation of 1T-TaS_(2)depends on the substitution site,leading to the heterogeneity of electronic properties.

Cloud storage services offer flexible, convenient solutions for business and personal users to store data. Traditionally, Third Party Auditors (TPAs) are introduced to ensure data integrity for public auditing. However, TPAs may also be untrusted for forging the auditing results or colluding with cloud storage servers to deceive users. In this paper, we propose a novel Blockchain-based Public Auditing Outsourcing system without TPAs (BPAO), in which the computationally expensive operations in public auditing are outsourced through blockchain to the cloud servers without risking users' privacy. Our security analysis indicates that BPAO achieves soundness and robustness. The experimental results show that BPAO is computationally efficient for cloud storage user. © 2021 IEEE.
