One major goal of digital twin technology applied in the Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) Industry is the mapping of roads and road environments with their associated information. Such digital twins can support cost-effective testing, simulations, and the production of mapping backgrounds for automated vehicles and generally for Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) developments. The efficient workflow that leads from data acquisition to finished products depends on a number of requirements and knowledge sets. The main contribution of the paper is a general methodology of creating HD-map from point cloud and image data set. Accordingly, the most widely used survey techniques are presented and the requirements for the objects to be derived are summarized. The paper then outlines a general implementation procedure as an expert knowledge through a real-life example, where the results obtained for the ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground are demonstrated. © 2023 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rethinking the model for building the smart cities, and this paper makes just such a step in that direction. It then examines various ways of cutting urban pollution. Under increasing pressure from rising urbanization, smart cities represent a huge leap forward in regard to efficiency, scalability and livability. The key is IoTtechnology, which collects and analyzes data in real time and allows for more quick-witted and intelligent urban governance. This paper combines literature review, case study analysis and data-driven methods to focus on the opportunities offered by IoT applications for restructuring urban traffic systems and pollution control. This study explains what is missing in modern smart city initiatives, and offers a road map for bringing Internet of things solutions to municipal systems. The results can also serve as some answers to cope with the dilemma and bring more intelligence, cleanness, efficiency in making a city into a smart metropolis. The article ends by highlighting the significance of IoT for future urban development, and ideas for further research into this complex yet rapidly evolving area. © 2024 IEEE.

Machine learning is an extremely efficient technique for solving complex problems without the use of traditional programming but rather enabling machines to learn from an input of data and train them to cope with various problems. The rapid growth in the number of active mobile devices, mobile applications and services dictates an efficient utilization of mobile and wireless networking infrastructure. Communication networks need to evolve and valorize machine learning methods in order to process large volumes of data without introducing excessive time delay in these computations. Upcoming 5G systems are expected to be the first network infrastructure to support exploding mobile traffic volumes and machine learning techniques can be used in order to help manage the rise in data volumes. We present a mechanism for resource allocation in mobile and wireless networks, that effectively utilizes machine learning techniques. © 2021 IEEE.

The growth of e-commerce has altered how consumers shop, providing a digital space where convenience, vast product offerings, and competitive pricing converge. In today’s world, e-commerce websites are transitioning from traditional search-driven methods to customized and intuitive approaches via product suggestions. Product recommendation systems are vital in e-commerce, from bringing new business to retaining existing ones. Our three-part recommendation system is designed so that new users have a great and engaging experience as the Product Popularity -Based System shows them carefully chosen products that are in demand. Collaborative Filtering Recommendations are highly personalized recommendations given to people who have already made their first purchases based on their prior actions and preferences. The K-Means Clustering-Based Recommendation System uses textual clustering analysis to deliver contextually relevant recommendations. We use a variety of evaluation metrics, such as click-through rates, user engagement, and the Silhouette Score, to assess the effectiveness and accuracy of our recommendation systems. Our findings show significant increases in user engagement, conversion rates, and relevant recommendations. Our findings demonstrate the transformative power of well-designed recommendation systems, which improve user experiences and retention and provide invaluable solutions for businesses entering the e-commerce space. This paper provides an in-depth examination of the multifaceted landscape of e-commerce recommendations, shedding light on their far-reaching implications for customer acquisition and retention in this dynamic digital era.

SWAM: Revisiting Swap and OOMK for Improving Application Responsiveness on Mobile Devices

Existing memory reclamation policies on mobile devices may be no longer valid because they have negative effects on the response time of running applications. In this paper, we propose SWAM, a new integrated memory management technique that complements the shortcomings of both the swapping and killing mechanism in mobile devices and improves the application responsiveness. SWAM consists of (1) Adaptive Swap that performs swapping adaptively into memory or storage device while managing the swap space dynamically, (2) OOM Cleaner that reclaims shared object pages in the swap space to secure available memory and storage space, and (3) EOOM Killer that terminates processes in the worst case while prioritizing the lowest initialization cost applications as victim processes first. Experimental results demonstrate that SWAM significantly reduces the number of applications killed by OOMK (6.5x lower), and improves application launch time (36% faster) and response time (41% faster), compared to the conventional schemes. © 2023, CC BY.

In this work, we present a control variate approximation technique that enables the exploitation of highly approximate multipliers in Deep Neural Network (DNN) accelerators. Our approach does not require retraining and significantly decreases the induced error due to approximate multiplications, improving the overall inference accuracy. As a result, our approach enables satisfying tight accuracy loss constraints while boosting the power savings. Our experimental evaluation, across six different DNNs and several approximate multipliers, demonstrates the versatility of our approach and shows that compared to the accurate design, our control variate approximation achieves the same performance, 45% power reduction, and less than 1% average accuracy loss. Compared to the corresponding approximate designs without using our technique, our approach improves the accuracy by 1.9x on average. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered significant attention from the research community during the last decade, due to their diverse capabilities and potential applications. One of the most critical functions that drones must execute efficiently is navigation in real-world environments. This paper presents a decentralized approach for enabling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to navigate safely in unknown environments and avoid obstacles. Leveraging the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) algorithm, implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS), our method facilitates conflict detection and resolution in 2D environments. Through simulations using ROS, Gazebo, and Iris drones, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in scenarios with initial trajectory conflicts. Our work addresses the pressing need for UAVs to autonomously plan and execute safe flights, laying the groundwork for enhanced UAV capabilities in various real-world applications. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our approach.

Edge detection is one of the most common operations needed in the image processing domain. In this work, alternative implementations of the Sobel algorithm are tested on a ZCU102 Xilinx embedded platform, demonstrating how different optimization techniques can be conveniently configured in Xilinx Vitis environment. We exploit (a) Xilinx Runtime library (XRT) that allows the reprogramming of the reconfigurable logic at real time and (b) the various high-level attributes offered by the OpenCL API for efficient resource allocation in the state-of-the-art Xilinx Ultrascale Multi-Processor System-on-Chips (MPSoC). Specifically, different implementations of the Sobel algorithm (varying the data transfer models and data packing modes) are demonstrated and analyzed. Our experimental results shows that starting from a CPU implementation with 656 ms latency, the frame processing time is reduced to a range between 17 ms and 22 ms depending on the allocated resources, leading to a solution that is up to 38 times faster. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents a method for indoor localization using two complementary techniques: Fingerprinting (FP) and Trilateration. The system is based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and a network of wireless anchors to determine the location of a mobile device. The FP approach collects Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) data from BLE anchors in various indoor locations and creates a map of the environment in an offline stage. During the online stage, the device’s location is determined by comparing its current RSSI measurements to the map. The FP technique showed an accuracy of 79.31% without positions on the other side of a separating concrete wall and 71.88% including those positions. In contrast, trilateration calculates the position of the device using distance measurements from multiple anchors, achieving an accuracy of 44.44%. Both techniques were tested in various environments and layouts, and the results indicate that FP is more suitable for indoor localization, particularly in large buildings with many rooms. This paper highlights the potential of these two techniques for practical indoor localization applications. Moreover, one of the experimental setups for the fingerprinting technique was tested in multiple rooms separated by a concrete wall to provide information about the potential scalability of the technique.

Silhouette coefficient is an established internal clustering evaluation measure that produces a score per data point, assessing the quality of its clustering assignment. To assess the quality of the clustering of the whole dataset, the scores of all the points in the dataset are typically (micro) averaged into a single value. An alternative path, however, that is rarely employed, is to average first at the cluster level and then (macro) average across clusters. As we illustrate in this work with a synthetic example, the typical micro-averaging strategy is sensitive to cluster imbalance while the overlooked macro-averaging strategy is far more robust. By investigating macro-Silhouette further, we find that uniform sub-sampling, the only available strategy in existing libraries, harms the measure’s robustness against imbalance. We address this issue by proposing a per-cluster sampling method. An experimental study on eight real-world datasets is then used to analyse both coefficients in two clustering tasks.
