As the impact of AI on various scientific fields is increasing, it is crucial to embrace interdisciplinary knowledge to understand the impact of technology on society. The goal is to foster a research environment beyond disciplines that values diversity and creates, critiques and develops new conceptual and theoretical frameworks. Even though research beyond disciplines is essential for understanding complex societal issues and creating positive impact it is notoriously difficult to evaluate and is often not recognized by current academic career progression. The motivation for this paper is to engage in broad discussion across disciplines and identify guiding principles fir AI research beyond disciplines in a structured and inclusive way, revealing new perspectives and contributing to societal and human wellbeing and sustainability. © 2023, CC BY.

In recent times, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are broadly utilized in targeted monitoring applications. Traditional target coverage techniques usually consider that environment is known completely and every target is covered by single sensor. However those algorithms are inflexible when the sensor is about to die, that is, lack of energy and therefore target has to be covered with more than a sensor which is termed as n coverage crisis. In general, n coverage problem is energy and time consuming process, as well sensor organization is needed all the time. To resolve this crisis, this work anticipates a n coverage model with VCH-PSO (Virtual Cluster Head based Particle Swarm Optimization and EFLM (Energy management based Fuzzy logic Model) to enlarge the lifetime of WSN. During the search of optimal area coverage, diverse factors like node position, energy consumption, and coverage range of sensors are considered significantly. Simulation was carried out in MATLAB environment and compared with prevailing techniques. The proposed model shows better trade off in terms of network lifetime and time needed for switching between various coverage regions. © 2020 IEEE.

Spectral measurements provide valuable information on the electronic states and crystal structures of materials. In particular, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can facilitate analysis of the chemical bond state of material surfaces. In the analysis of XPS spectra, the spectrum to be measured is typically compared to a reference spectrum measured on a known single-phase sample. Therefore, establishing a reference spectral database is imperative. In this study, round-robin tests of XPS spectra are performed with the aim of obtaining recommended XPS reference spectra and experimental procedures, including preprocessing. Determining the variations in peak structures between instrument- and sample-derived spectral shapes, and quantitatively discussing them in round-robin tests of XPS spectra are challenging. Therefore, an analysis method that automatically determines the above mentioned variations and extracts the samplederived common spectral structures is developed. Groundbreaking advances in theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). DL algorithms are groundedin non-linear and complex artificial neural systems that progressively extract higher-level features from *** is frequently compared with human-level performance in real-world tasks, such as clinical diagnostics. Itis also a turning point in solving otherwise intractable problems in the design of virtual agents or robotics;orin providing novel insight into disease progress in genomics and Neuroimaging (NI), understanding humanbrain function, the automation of industrial processes based on computer vision, and so on. In this paper, themost relevant advances from the last few years in AI and several applications to neuroscience, neuroimaging,computer vision, and robotics are presented, reviewed and discussed. In this way, we summarize the state-ofthe-art in AI methods, models and applications within a collection of works presented at the 9th InternationalConference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation (IWINAC). The works presentedin this paper are excellent examples of new scientific discoveries made in laboratories that are successfullytransferred to real-life applications. © 2023, The Authors. In general, ophthalmologists visually grade the state of a patient by counting the cells within the anterior chamber OCT image. The manual cell counting method is highly inaccurate and spends a lot of time to determine the progress of the patient. In this work, we develop a new tool to count cells in anterior chamber OCT images to aid doctors in analyzing the state of patients. We exploit image processing to remove noises from images, segment the anterior chamber, and quantize the cells in OCT images. We also provide statistics to aid the doctors in determining the progress of the patients. © Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers

Background: Despite major advances in artificial intelligence (AI) research for healthcare, the deployment and adoption of AI technologies remain limited in clinical practice. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the clinical, technical, ethical and legal risks associated with healthcare AI. To increase adoption in the real world, it is essential that AI technologies are trusted and accepted by patients, clinicians, health organisations and authorities. This paper describes the FUTURE-AI framework as the first international consensus guideline for trustworthy AI in healthcare. Methods: The FUTURE-AI consortium was founded in 2021 and now comprises 117 interdisciplinary experts from 50 countries representing all continents, including AI scientists, clinical researchers, biomedical ethicists, and social scientists. Over a two-year period, the consortium established guiding principles and best practices for trustworthy and deployable AI through an iterative process comprising an in-depth literature review, a modified Delphi survey, and online consensus meetings. Findings: The FUTURE-AI framework was established based on six guiding principles for trustworthy AI in healthcare, i.e. Fairness, Universality, Traceability, Usability, Robustness and Explainability. Through consensus, a set of 30 best practices were defined, addressing technical, clinical, socio-ethical and legal dimensions of trustworthy AI. The recommendations cover the entire lifecycle of healthcare AI, from design, development and validation to regulation, deployment, and monitoring. Interpretation: FUTURE-AI is a structured, risk-informed framework which provides guidance for constructing healthcare AI tools that will be trusted, deployed and adopted in real-world clinical practice. Researchers are encouraged to take the recommendations into account in proof-of-concept stages to facilitate future translation towards clinical practice of healthcare AI. Mobile Context-Aware Recommender Systems (CARS) have recently emerged aiming at generating recommendations relevant to the specific environmental and situational usage context. This article reports on the design and implementation of a collaborative filtering-based mobile CARS, developed as part of an e-platform that supports location-based search for retail products and services sold by nearby physical retailer shops. In addition to the current user location, our RS considers a multitude of contextual factors like time, season, demographic data, consumer behavior, and location history of the user in order to derive more meaningful product recommendations. The RS has been tested on real operational environments as well as on lab evaluation trials demonstrating higher accuracy and relevance of recommendations against two baseline approaches.

Neuromorphic photonics are processors inspired by the human brain and enabled by light (photons) instead of traditional electronics. Neuromorphic photonics and its associated concepts are experiencing a significant resurgence, building on foundational research from the 1980s and 1990s. This renewed momentum is driven by breakthroughs in photonic integration, nonlinear optics, and advanced materials, alongside the growing necessity of neuro-inspired computing in numerous applications of economic and societal relevance. The increasing demand for energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI) solutions underscores the need for innovation and a cohesive vision to address key challenges, including scalability, energy efficiency, precision, and standardized performance benchmarks. Together, these efforts present an opportunity to establish a unique photonic advantage with practical, real-world applications. This roadmap consolidates recent advances while exploring emerging applications, reflecting the remarkable diversity of hardware platforms, neuromorphic concepts, and implementation philosophies reported in the field. It emphasizes the critical role of cross-disciplinary collaboration in this rapidly evolving field. The roadmap introduces various approaches to embedding the high-complexity transformations central to neuromorphic computing, focusing on frequency, delay, and spectral embeddings. This is followed by a discussion of architectures of photonic neural networks (PNNs) and an in-depth analysis of methods for implementing these architectures in photonic hardware. Dedicated sections delve into integrated photonic hardware, the realization of photonic weights and memories, and the optimization of training processes for photonic neuromorphic architectures. The roadmap concludes by exploring numerous potential applications, highlighting the challenges and advances necessary to transition neuromorphic photonic computing from a primarily academic pursuit to a technolog

Driver distraction identification with an ensemble of convolutional neural networks

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 1.25 million deaths yearly due to road traffic accidents worldwide and the number has been continuously increasing over the last few years. Nearly fifth of these accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Existing work of distracted driver detection is concerned with a small set of distractions (mostly, cell phone usage). Unreliable ad-hoc methods are often used. In this paper, we present the first publicly available dataset for driver distraction identification with more distraction postures than existing alternatives. In addition, we propose a reliable deep learning-based solution that achieves a 90% accuracy. The system consists of a genetically-weighted ensemble of convolutional neural networks, we show that a weighted ensemble of classifiers using a genetic algorithm yields in a better classification confidence. We also study the effect of different visual elements in distraction detection by means of face and hand localizations, and skin segmentation. Finally, we present a thinned version of our ensemble that could achieve 84.64% classification accuracy and operate in a real-time environment. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia with serious health consequences if not detected and treated early. Detecting AF using wearable devices with photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors and deep neural networks has demonstrated some success using proprietary algorithms in commercial solutions. However, further advancement of this paradigm of continuous AF detection in ambulatory settings, towards a population-wide screening use case, still faces several challenges, one of which is the lack of large-scale labeled training data. To address this challenge, in this study, we propose to leverage AF alarms from bedside patient monitors to label concurrent PPG signals, resulting in the largest PPG-AF dataset so far (8.5M 30-second records from 24100 patients) and demonstrating a practical approach to build large labeled PPG datasets. Furthermore, we recognize that the AF labels thus obtained contain errors because of false AF alarms generated from imperfect built-in algorithms from bedside monitors. Dealing with label noise with unknown distribution characteristics in this case requires advanced algorithms. We, therefore, introduce and open source a novel loss design, the cluster membership consistency (CMC) loss, to mitigate label errors. By comparing CMC with state-of-the-art methods selected from a noisy label competition, we demonstrate its superiority in multiple aspects including handling label noise in PPG data, resilience to poor-quality signals, and computational efficiency. © 2022, CC BY.
