In this paper, we study how to fold a specified origami crease pattern in order to minimize the impact of paper thickness. Specifically, origami designs are often expressed by a mountain-valley pattern (plane graph of creases with relative fold orientations), but in general this specification is consistent with exponentially many possible folded states. We analyze the complexity of finding the best consistent folded state according to twometrics:minimizing the total number of layers in the folded state (so that a "flat folding" is indeed close toflat), andminimizing the total amount of paper required to execute the folding (where "thicker" creases consume more paper). We prove both problems strongly NP-complete even for 1D folding. On the other hand, we prove the first problem fixed-parameter tractable in 1D with respect to the number of layers. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The single biometric system may be inadequate for passive authentication either because of noise in data samples or because of unavailability of a sample at a given time. In order to overcome the limitation of the single biometric, a multiple biometric modalities are used. In this paper, palmprint and iris are integrated in order to construct an efficient multibiometric recognition system based on matching score level fusion and by using the technique of sum of score. This system tries to improve the recognition results of single biometric systems. The features of Iris and palmprint are extracted using Log Gabor filter. The Hamming Distance is used for matching of Iris or palmprint feature vector. We have evaluated the proposed scheme and we have compared it with the results of the single biometric using the same data. The experimental results showed that the designed system achieves an excellent recognition rate and provides more security than single biometric system.

Dynamic models are used to describe the spatio-temporal evolution of complex systems. It is frequently difficult to construct a useful model, especially for emerging situations such as the 2003 SARS outbreak. Here we describe the application of a modern predictor-corrector method - particle filtering - that could enable relatively quick model construction and support on-the-fly correction as empirical data arrives. This technique has seen recent use with compartmental models. We contribute here what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of particle filtering to agent-based models. While our particle models adapt to different ground-truth conditions, agent-based models exhibit limited adaptability under some model initializations. Several explanations are advanced for such behavior. Since this research serves as an initial foray into this line of investigation, we draw out a clear path of the next steps to determine the possible benefits of using particle filters on agent-based models.

Biometric technologies are becoming the foundation of an extensive array of highly secure identification and personal verification solutions. Nowadays, palmprint identification is a novel and one of the most reliable biometrically based technology in applications of personal identification due to its highly stability and uniqueness. In this paper, biometric security system for access control based on multi-spectral palmprint is presented. To represent texture information, rotation invariant variance measures is used. Finally, a hamming distance score is employed to measure the similarity between templates of palmprints during the atching phase. The results show that a rotation invariant variance measure is robust to some extent in rotation of the images. The accuracy and speed of the proposed method can meet the requirements of an online biometric identification.

In today's Internet, the commercial aspects of routing are gaining importance. Current technology allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to renegotiate contracts online to maximize profits. Changing link prices will influence interdomain routing policies that are now driven bymonetary aspects as well as global resource and performance optimization. In this article, we consider an interdomain routing game in which the ISP's action is to set the price for its transit links. Assuming a cheapest path routing scheme, the optimal action is the price setting that yields the highest utility (i.e., profit) and depends both on the network load and the actions of other ISPs. We adapt a continuous and a discrete action learning automaton (LA) to operate in this framework as a tool that can be used by ISP operators to learn optimal price setting. In our model, agents representing different ISPs learn only on the basis of local information and do not need any central coordination or sensitive information exchange. Simulation results show that a single ISP employing LAs is able to learn the optimal price in a stationary environment. By introducing a selective exploration rule, LAs are also able to operate in nonstationary environments. When two ISPs employ LAs, we show that they converge to stable and fair equilibrium strategies. © 2015 ACM.

Nowadays, universities and companies have a huge need for simulation and modelling methodologies. In the particular case of traffic and transportation, making physical modifications to the real traffic networks could be highly expensive, dependent on political decisions and could be highly disruptive to the environment. However, while studying a specific domain or problem, analysing a problem through simulation may not be trivial and may need several simulation tools, hence raising interoperability issues. To overcome these problems, we propose an agent-directed transportation simulation platform, through the cloud, by means of services. We intend to use the IEEE standard HLA (High Level Architecture) for simulators interoperability and agents for controlling and coordination. Our motivations are to allow multiresolution analysis of complex domains, to allow experts to collaborate on the analysis of a common problem and to allow co-simulation and synergy of different application domains. This paper will start by presenting some preliminary background concepts to help better understand the scope of this work. After that, the results of a literature review is shown. Finally, the general architecture of a transportation simulation platform is proposed.

For the purposes of development of a small and autonomously operated airship, a need to create a model of its propelling and motion has arisen. Being described within this paper, the model defines the requirements that are imposed to motors, propellers and the airship's controlling system. The model is based on a typical design of a small airship, that consists of two main propellers, being placed symetrically according to the gondola beneath the airship's bladder, and one tail propeller that is placed transversely at the airship's tail. According to this model, forces needed to move the airship in the desired direction can be estimated as well as the power consumption of the motors and angular velocity of the propellers. Although the dynamic model of the airship would exceed the framework of this paper, it is also described in broad terms and the results of two main simulations are presented hereby. The simulations describe the behavior of the airship in case of forward acceleration and braking as well as in case of yawing with such braking that ensures reaching of the desired yawing angle. © ECMS Valeri M.
