In Boolean games, agents try to reach a goal formulated as a Boolean formula. These games are attractive because of their compact representations. However, few methods are available to compute the solutions and they are either limited or do not take privacy or communication concerns into account. In this paper we propose the use of an algorithm related to reinforcement learning to address this problem. Our method is decentralized in the sense that agents try to achieve their goals without knowledge of the other agents' goals. We prove that this is a sound method to compute a Pareto optimal pure Nash equilibrium for an interesting class of Boolean games. Experimental results are used to investigate the performance of the algorithm. Copyright © 2014 SCITEPRESS.

This paper proposes a new approach to improve generalisation of standard regression techniques when there are hundreds or thousands of input variables. The input space X is composed of observational data of the form (xi, y(xi)), i = 1…n where each xi denotes a k-dimensional input vector of design variables and y is the response. Genetic Programming (GP) is used to transform the original input space X into a new input space Z = (zi, y(zi)) that has smaller input vector and is easier to be mapped into its corresponding responses. GP is designed to evolve a function that receives the original input vector from each xi in the original input space as input and return a new vector zi as an output. Each element in the newly evolved zi vector is generated from an evolved mathematical formula that extracts statistical features from the original input space. To achieve this, we designed GP trees to produce multiple outputs. Empirical evaluation of 20 different problems revealed that the new approach is able to significantly reduce the dimensionality of the original input space and improve the performance of standard approximation models such as Kriging, Radial Basis Functions Networks, and Linear Regression, and GP (as a regression techniques). In addition, results demonstrate that the new approach is better than standard dimensionality reduction techniques such as Principle Component Analysis (PCA). Moreover, the results show that the proposed approach is able to improve the performance of standard Linear Regression and make it competitive to other stochastic regression techniques. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of Vector Evaluated Differential Evolution (VEDE) and Vector Evaluated Particle Swarm Optimization (VEPSO) in solving a real world financial optimization problem. The algorithms have been applied to the Reinsurance Contract Problem, which is a challenging problem in computational finance, and their performance has been evaluated in terms of metrics including the average number of solutions, the average hypervolume and the coverage. Results have shown that both algorithms can reach good solutions, however VEPSO tends to perform better. © 2014 IEEE.

Security of digital images in today's cyber is a major concern. Transmission of compressed and uncompressed multimedia data is necessary for communication between different devices. Devices of different screen features and resolution need very efficient and fast compression techniques in order to maintain visual features of transmitted media. Robustness is of a key consideration and importance in image compression techniques. Full recovery of images after compression is a challenge for image compression algorithms. It is practically closely impossible for most encrypted-compressed-images or compressed-encryptedimages to be efficiently and fully reconstructed. In this paper we proposed a robust, efficient and fully recoverable encrypted-compressed image based on hybrid discrete cosine transformation and visual cryptographic technique for securing digital images. We first encrypted the image without pixel loss and then compressed the image which resulted into pixel loss during the compression phase. We decrypted the compressed image by obtaining perfect visuals but losses in pixel values. The analysis of the process proved to be an efficient way of encrypting images and compressing them for other channels with less data capacity without the worry of visual loss as well as ensuring security of the data during transmission. The programming and implementation was done using MATlab.

In this paper, the problem of modifying casual speech to reach the intelligibility level of clear speech is addressed. Unlike other studies, in this work modifications on casual speech both consider intelligibility and speech quality. To achieve this, the authors focus on human-like modifications inspired by clear speech. An acoustic analysis performed on clear and casual speech reveals energy differences on specific frequency bands between the two speaking styles. Then, a simple method is used to boost these frequency regions on casual speech. The proposed method, called mix-filtering, uses a multi-band filtering scheme to isolate the information of these frequency bands and then, add this information to the original signal. Our method is compared in terms of intelligibility and quality with unmodified casual speech and with a highly intelligible spectral modification technique, namely the Spectral Shaping and Dynamic Range Compression (SSDRC). Two different objective measures that are highly correlated with subjective intelligibility scores are used for estimating the intelligibility, whereas for evaluating the quality, preference listening tests are performed. Results show that the mix-filtering technique increases the intelligibility of casual speech while maintains its quality. On the other hand, while SSDRC outperforms on intelligibility, it degrades significantly the quality of casual speech.

Wearable devices performing advanced bio-signal analysis algorithms are aimed to foster a revolution in healthcare provision of chronic cardiac diseases. In this context, energy efficiency is of paramount importance, as long-term monitoring must be ensured while relying on a tiny power source. Operating at a scaled supply voltage, just above the threshold voltage, effectively helps in saving substantial energy, but it makes circuits, and especially memories, more prone to errors, threatening the correct execution of algorithms. The use of error detection and correction codes may help to protect the entire memory content, however it incurs in large area and energy overheads which may not be compatible with the tight energy budgets of wearable systems. To cope with this challenge, in this paper we propose to limit the overhead of traditional schemes by selectively detecting and correcting errors only in data highly impacting the end-to-end quality of service of ultra-low power wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) devices. This partition adopts the protection of either significant words or significant bits of each data element, according to the application characteristics (statistical properties of the data in the application buffers), and its impact in determining the output. The proposed heterogeneous error protection scheme in real ECG signals allows substantial energy savings (11% in wearable devices) compared to state-of-the-art approaches, like ECC, in which the whole memory is protected against errors. At the same time, it also results in negligible output quality degradation in the evaluated power spectrum analysis application of ECG signals.

Dialogue Systems (DS) are intelligent user interfaces, able to provide intuitive and natural interaction with their users, through a variety of modalities. We present, here, a DS whose purpose is to ensure that patients are consistently and correctly performing rehabilitative exercises, in a tele-rehabilitation scenario. More specifically, our DS operates in collaboration with a remote rehabilitation system, where users suffering from injuries, degenerative disorders and others, perform exercises at home under the (remote) supervision of a therapist. The DS interacts with the users and makes sure that they perform their prescribed exercises correctly and according to the specified, by the therapist, protocol. To this end, various sensors are utilized, such as Microsoft's Kinect, the Wi-Patch and others. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
