Clear speech is a speaking style adopted by speakers in an attempt to maximize the clarity of their speech and is proven to be more intelligible than casual speech. This work focuses on modifying casual speech to sound as intelligible as clear speech. First, we examine the role of speaking rate for intelligibility. Clear and casual speech signals are time-scale stretched, matching the average duration of the casual and clear speech respectively. Next, spectral shaping and dynamic range compression are considered for increasing the loudness of the original casual speech while keeping the power of signals unaffected. Subjective tests with speech-in-noise conditions using speech shaped noise at -3, 0, and 5 dB SNR show that clear speech with high speaking rate is less intelligible than the original clear speech but still more intelligible than the unmodified casual speech. However, the intelligibility score for the time-scaled modified casual speech is deteriorated. In contrast, the loudness amplification considerably improved the intelligibility of the casual speech, reaching the scores of original clear speech. Objective measurements based on Speech Intelligibility Index (SE) are well correlated with the subjective test except for the time-scaled casual signal.

Cyber security and privacy are sources of increasing importance for the successful deployment of information and communication technology. This paper investigates aspects concerning privacy during the communication of low color depth images in encrypted form via low bit-rate, error prone channels. Existing approaches for region of interest determination in images, image encryption and image compression within this context are presented. The problem is established and conflicts between the aims of data compression and data encryption are out-lined and theoretically founded. An innovative approach is hence presented that automatically selects regions of interest in low color depth images, while achieving an acceptable level of security without increasing the data volume of the resulting image. The technique is suitable for cases where the data being transmitted has a limited lifecycle period and the compressed and encrypted image data are likely to be corrupted, such as the transmission via channels that are not guaranteed error - free. An error correction add-on to the algorithm permits an increase on the average decrypted image quality. Initial cryptanalytic resilience results for the proposed scheme are given. The proposed scheme is intended as a means of facilitating the deployment of COTS technology in tactical situations, by increasing the level of security of the underlying infrastructure.

Handheld optical projectors provide a simple way to overcome the limited screen real-estate on mobile devices. We present virtual projection (VP), an interaction metaphor inspired by how we intuitively control the position, size, and orientation of a handheld optical projector's image. VP is based on tracking a handheld device without an optical projector and allows selecting a target display on which to position, scale, and orient an item in a single gesture. By relaxing the optical projection metaphor, we can deviate from modeling perspective projection, for example, to constrain scale or orientation, create multiple copies, or offset the image. VP also supports dynamic filtering based on the projection frustum, creating overview and detail applications, and selecting portions of a larger display for zooming and panning. We show exemplary use cases implemented using our optical feature-tracking framework and present the results of a user study demonstrating the effectiveness of VP in complex interactions with large displays.
