The use of covering models in military operations is a key issue which can significantly affect decision making in several military scenarios concerning the formulation of the best military structure. In this paper we concentrate on the well known Maximal Coverage Location Problem in combination with the Back Up Coverage Location Problem and demonstrate that using the above covering models in order to formulate the best military structure can lead to excellent covering results. We propose the above models based on the notion of coverage and exploit the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems in order to better formulate, solve and visualize the problem of the best military coverage structure. Results of an empirical study indicate that the proposed models can provide optimal coverage structure and thus must be used extensively in military operations.

Psychophysiological monitoring as part of the training of pilots of the Greek Airforce and the implementation of an auditory identification task for error monitoring are discussed in this paper. The proposed tones-matching task (TMT) allows investigating, via simultaneous assessment of brain potentials of the two pilots working together, the time course of relevant perceptual, decisional and audio-related information processes in flying task performance. With Event Related Potentials (ERP) research error-related negativities (ERNs) relative to action and perceptual consequences of action in both pilot and co-pilot will be assessed. The TMT will be in this sense a tool of evaluating the co-pilots or trainer's skills and capabilities. In addition to the above, auditory EEG neurofeedback could be also used for error correction and concentration improvement in pilots.

This article proposes an approach that accelerates the realization of user identification schemes that follow the principle of zero knowledge. The proposed approach is based on using finite field arithmetic to replace the usual modular arithmetic approaches. The application of this efficient method that was developed using Galois Fields, renders feasible an exponential reduction of the computation time required for classical zero knowledge authentication methods, such as FFSIS, Schnorr and Guillou & Quisquater. Modifications of the relevant schemes are presented that use Galois Field multiplication operations. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed procedure attains a per order acceleration of the execution time required for the user authentication by 2 - 3 orders of magnitude, via a hardware implementation.

The classification of total load demand profiles for every type of war-ships is crucial information, because it is the necessary base for a series of studies and operations, such as load estimation, load shedding and power management systems. In this paper a pattern recognition methodology is presented, which is based on different pattern recognition methods, such as k-means, modified k-means etc. Each method can properly be optimized by using different adequacy measures, such as the ratio of within cluster sum of squares to between cluster variation. This methodology is applied to total load demand of Hellenic Navy MEKO type frigate indicatively and the usefulness of the respective results for the power system design and operation is proved.

Widely linear estimation for complex-valued signal processing is growing in popularity, especially in the cases where the involved signals exhibit non-circular characteristics. In this paper, the extended Wirtinger's calculus in complex Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), presented in, is adopted to derive complex kernel-based widely-linear estimation filters. Furthermore, we illuminate several important characteristics of widely linear filters, which, to our knowledge, haven’t been considered before. Our results indicate that, in contrast to many cases where the gains from adopting widely linear estimation filters, instead of ordinary linear filters, are rudimentary, for the case of kernel-based widely linear filters significant performance improvements can be obtained.
