The public health system is plagued by inefficient use of resources. Frequently, the results are lengthy patient treatment waiting times. While many solutions for patient scheduling in health systems exist, few address the problem of coordination between independent autonomous departments. In this study, we describe the use of a distributed dynamic constraint optimisation algorithm (Support Based Distributed Optimisation) for the generation and optimisation of schedules across autonomous units. We model the problem of scheduling radiotherapy patients across several independent oncology units as a dynamic distributed constraint optimisation problem. Such an approach minimises the sharing of private information such as department operation details as well as patient privacy information while taking into consideration patient preferences as well as resource utilisation to find a pareto-optimal solution. © 2011 ICST Institute for computer science, Social informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

The combination of increased data rates in 4G cellular networks (such as LTE Advanced), dedicated multicast/broadcast services (e-MBMS) and the emergence of scalable video coding standards (H.264 SVC) allow mobile operators to offer multimedia-based services with a high quality of experience to end users. H.264 SVC offers three dimensions of scalability v.i.z. Quality (SNR), Temporal and Spatial. In this paper we investigate the use of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) for video delivery over an LTE network. In particular, we carried on a two step performance evaluation: first, we perform a static analysis on how different types of scalability influences the video quality, then, we analyze through simulations how the transmission over a wireless means further affects the quality. In our analysis, we adopted a wide range of metrics: 2 full reference metrics, namely PSNR and SSIM, along with 2 no reference metrics, MSU Blocking and Blurring. Our results show that no-reference evaluation metrics could be employed alongside a frame-drop metric in the place of full reference metrics. Moreover, we show that the video scalability alone is not sufficient to avoid a degradation of quality, in some cases in the order of seconds, when caused by packet loss.

We present a novel approach for computing a compact and highly discriminant biometric signature for 3D face recognition using linear dimensionality reduction techniques. Initially, a geometry-image representation is used to effectively resample the raw 3D data. Subsequently, a wavelet transform is applied and a biometric signature composed of 7,200 wavelet coefficients is extracted. Finally, we apply a second linear dimensionality reduction step to the wavelet coefficients using Linear Discriminant Analysis and compute a compact biometric signature. Although this biometric signature consists of just 57 coefficients, it is highly discriminant. Our approach, UR3D-C, is experimentally validated using four publicly available databases (FRGC vl, FRGC v2, Bosphorus and BU-3DFE). State-of-the-art performance is reported in all of the above databases.

Text passwords are commonly used for user authentication in the web. There is lately a strong interest for case studies on the password habits of populations with different cultures and/or languages. In this paper, we augment the existing literature with a case study of Greek web sites. We analyze cleartext and encrypted passwords for almost 19,000 accounts and we draw conclusions on similarities with and oppositions to alike empirical studies. Our findings indicate that a significant percentage of users chooses easily-guessed passwords. The average password length is less than 7 characters and most passwords contain only letters and numbers. However, there are users that prefer passwords containing characters from the Greek alphabet. Such passwords are much harder to guess and our proposal is to encourage their usage. © 2011 IEEE.

This work considers the communication scenario where multiple sources transmit information to one or more receivers and these receivers request the information from all the sources. We construct a secret and reliable coding mechanism for noncoherent multisource network coding by extending the work [9, 10] to multisource case. Although the network scenario suffers from an adversary that can re-select the tapping links in different time slot and inject z erroneous packets into network, and the transmission links suffer from a packet erasures, our scheme can retrieve the original information secretly and accurately from the corrupt and deficient information. Meanwhile, the secret and reliable multisource network coding scheme can obtain an asymptotic achievable rate of k2z3. © 2011 IEEE.

We will focus on new interaction techniques, applications, personal projection devices, interaction design, multiuser aspects, multi-modal user interfaces and social implications. Our aim is to foster the evolution of a mobile and personal projection community.

Communities in social networks emerge from interactions among individuals and can be analyzed through a combination of clustering and graph layout algorithms. These approaches result in 2D or 3D visualizations of clustered graphs, with groups of vertices representing individuals that form a community. However, in many instances the vertices have attributes that divide individuals into distinct categories such as gender, profession, geographic location, and similar. It is often important to investigate what categories of individuals comprise each community and vice-versa, how the community structures associate the individuals from the same category. Currently, there are no effective methods for analyzing both the community structure and the category-based partitions of social graphs. We propose Group-In-a-Box (GIB), a metalayout for clustered graphs that enables multi-faceted analysis of networks. It uses the treemap space filling technique to display each graph cluster or category group within its own box, sized according to the number of vertices therein. GIB optimizes visualization of the network sub-graphs, providing a semantic substrate for category-based and cluster-based partitions of social graphs. We illustrate the application of GIB to multi-faceted analysis of real social networks and discuss desirable properties of GIB using synthetic datasets. © 2011 IEEE.

Concern mapping is the activity of assigning a stakeholder's concern to its corresponding elements in the source code. This activity is primordial to guide software maintainers in several tasks, such as understanding and restructuring the implementation of existing concerns. Even though different techniques are emerging to facilitate the concern mapping process, they are still manual and error-prone according to recent studies. Existing work does not provide any guidance to developers to review and correct concern mappings. In this context, this paper presents the characterization and classification of eight concern mapping mistakes commonly made by developers. These mistakes were found to be associated with various properties of concerns and modules in the source code. The mistake categories were derived from actual mappings of 10 concerns in 12 versions of industry systems. In order to further evaluate to what extent these mistakes also occur in wider contexts, we ran two experiments where 26 subjects mapped 10 concerns in two systems. Our experimental results confirmed the mapping mistakes that often occur when developers need to interact with the source code.

In contrast to traditional predictive coding, Wyner-Ziv video coding enables low-cost encoding architectures, in which the computationally expensive tasks for performing motion estimation are shifted to the decoder-side. In Wyner-Ziv video coding, side-information generation is a key aspect profoundly affecting the compression capacity of the system. This paper presents a novel technique which enables side-information refinement after DC coefficient band decoding in a transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video codec. The proposed side-information refinement approach performs overlapped block motion estimation and compensation, utilizing multi-hypothesis pixel-based prediction. The experimental results show that the presented Wyner-Ziv video codec incorporating the proposed technique yields significant and systematic compression gains of up to 23.22% with respect to the state-of-the-art DISCOVER codec. © 2011 IEEE.
