In this paper we review the concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and investigate its inherent technological services in the light of potential applications to ITS-related scenarios. Albeit AmI and ITS may seem to overlap in many aspects, they are indeed different and their true synergetic and mutual benefits have not been fully explored nor exploited. Therefore, coupling these two emerging fields might foster a cross-fertilization of opportunities, both for researchers in the scientific community and engineers as well as practitioners in charge of traffic operations. Bearing in mind such a challenging motivation, we propose an integrated research framework where AmI meets ITS requirements in the real world, is analysed in a virtual environment and support decision-making within virtual control strategists and management policy makers modelled under the metaphor of autonomous agents. Issues are still to be addressed and are discussed as future work opportunities.

The paper presents a context-based arithmetic coder's VLSI architecture used in SPIHT with reduced memory, which is used for high speed real-time applications. For hardware implementation, a dedicated context model is proposed for the coder. Each context can be processed in parallel and high speed operators are used for interval calculations. An embedded register array is used for cumulative frequency update. As a result, the coder can consume one symbol at each clock cycle. After FPGA synthesis and simulation, the throughput of our coder is comparable with those of similar hardware architectures used in ASIC technology. Especially, the memory capacity of the coder is smaller than those of corresponding systems. © 2010 SPIE.

TraSMAPI (Traffic Simulation Manager Application Programming Interface) is designed to provide real-time interaction with Traffic Simulators, collect relevant metrics and statistics, and offer an integrated framework to develop Multi-Agent Systems. It is presented as a tool for the simulation of dynamic control systems in road networks with special focus on Multi-Agent Systems. The abstraction over the simulator opens up the possibility of running different traffic simulators using the same API (application programming interface) allowing the comparison of results of the same application in different simulators. The proposed approach is, therefore, expected to be a key asset in supporting and enhancing engineers and practitioners to make more effective control decisions and implement more efficient management policies while analyzing and addressing traffic related problems in urban areas.

In this paper we discuss the robustness of the Quasi-Harmonic model, QHM, previously suggested for speech analysis [1] and AM-FM decomposition of speech [2]. Assuming a frame by frame analysis, QHM suggests an iterative estimator for the actual frequencies of the speech components at the center of analysis window. In this paper, we show that this is a biased estimator and then, we compute analytically and numerically the bias of the estimator showing its dependence on the type and length of the analysis window. Moreover, we analyze the robustness of the QHM estimator in white Gaussian noise, showing that the suggested iterative estimator asymptotically attains the corresponding Cramer-Rao lower bound even in adverse noisy conditions. Examples of synthetic signals are provided to support our analysis.

Recently, improvements in sensor technology contributed to increasing in spatial data acquisition. The use of remote sensing in many countries and states, where agricultural business is a large part of their gross income, can provide a valuable source to improve their economy. The combination of climate and remote sensing data can reveal useful information, which can help researchers to monitor and estimate the production of agricultural crops. Data mining techniques are the main tools to analyze and extract relationships and patterns. In this context, this paper presents a new algorithm for mining association patterns in Geo-referenced databases of climate and satellite images. The CLEARMiner (CLimatE Association patteRns Miner) algorithm identifies patterns in a time series and associates them with patterns in other series within a temporal sliding window. Experiments were performed with synthetic and real data of climate and NOAA-AVHRR sensor for sugar cane fields. Results show a correlation between agroclimate time series and vegetation index images. Rules generated by our new algorithm show the association patterns in different periods of time in each time series, pointing to a time delay between the occurrences of patterns in the series analyzed, corroborating what specialists usually forecast having the burden of dealing with many data charts. © 2010 ACM.

Decomposition of speech into a deterministic part and a stochastic part is a typical modeling. Usually, the deterministic part in voiced speech is modeled as a sum of time-varying sinusoids while the stochastic part is modeled as modulated noise. The estimation of sinusoidal parameters assumes that locally speech is a stationary signal. However, this is not true leading to biased amplitude and phase estimation. In this paper, we develop a scheme for speech analysis and synthesis which is able to deal with locally nonstationary frames. Thus, deterministic part it modeled using an adaptive quasi-harmonic model while stochastic part is modeled as time-modulated and frequency-modulated noise. Results show that the reconstructed signal is almost indistinguishable from the original.

Devices that offer positioning and route guidance depend on updated digital maps for correct functioning. Updating digital maps is a highly expensive and complex process so it became necessary to develop new ways to detect changes to the road network. Using GPS points gathered by users during their journeys, it is possible to compare the real road network with the digital map. This paper describes a methodology to detect incongruences of different road geometry, alteration of junction position, prohibited manoeuvres and traffic direction as well as a sample of the results obtained. ©2010 IEEE.

It can be natural to believe that many of the traditional issues of scale have been eliminated or at least greatly reduced via cloud computing. That is, if one can create a seemingly wellfunctioning cloud application that operates correctly on small or moderate-sized problems, then the very nature of cloud programming abstractions means that the same application will run as well on potentially significantly larger problems. In this paper, we present our experiences taking MODISAzure, our satellite data processing system built on the Windows Azure cloud computing platform, from the proof-of-concept stage to a point of being able to run on significantly larger problem sizes (e.g., from national-scale data sizes to global-scale data sizes). To our knowledge, this is the longest-running escience application on the nascent Windows Azure platform. We found that while many infrastructure-level issues were thankfully masked from us by the cloud infrastructure, it was valuable to design additional redundancy and fault-tolerance capabilities such as transparent idempotent task retry and logging to support debugging of user code encountering unanticipated data issues. Further, we found that using a commercial cloud means anticipating inconsistent performance and black-box behavior of virtualized compute instances, as well as leveraging changing platform capabilities over time. We believe that the experiences presented in this paper can help future escience cloud application developers on Windows Azure and other commercial cloud providers. © 2010 IEEE.

User authentication procedures are a computer system's first line of defense against malicious attacks that could potentially jeopardize its availability and reliability. Computational complexity considerations may prevent system designers from implementing efficient authentication procedures. This paper presents a robust two level authentication procedure is presented that is highly efficient and suitable for multi-user systems. Authentication is attained in only a single cycle of exchanges between the user and the authentication system. Further advantages arise from the fact that with the proposed technique, it is not necessary to store lists of passwords and therefore the overhead caused in systems with large numbers of registered users is minimal. The proposed architecture is shown to be reliable while creating significant economies in the amount of information that needs to be stored. These facts therefore render the architecture highly suitable for hardware implementations. © 2010 IEEE.

The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.
