Researchers are beginning to realize the potential of web services that can use the web as a place for information publication and access as opposed to the traditional webservices paradigm that merely uses the web as a transport medium. Traditional web services can be difficult to discover, can have complex invocation APIs, and require strong coupling between communicating applications. In previous work, we presented ontology-based techniques in which users make service requests using free-form, naturallanguage-like specifications. This paper shows how we can use these ontological techniques to automatically create ontology-based web services that (1) are easy for software agents to discover because they are created based on machine-processable formalisms (ontologies), (2) have invocation APIs requiring only simple read and write operations, and (3) require no a priori agreements regarding types and data formats between communicating applications. Experiments with our prototype implementation in several domains show that our approach can effectively create web services with these characteristics. © 2007 IEEE.

We present a corpus-based hybrid approach to music analysis and composition, which incorporates statistical, connectionist, and evolutionary components. Our framework employs artificial music critics, which may be trained on large music corpora, and then pass aesthetic judgment on music artifacts. Music artifacts are generated by an evolutionary music composer, which utilizes music critics as fitness functions. To evaluate this approach we conducted three experiments. First, using music features based on Zipf's law, we trained artificial neural networks to predict the popularity of 992 musical pieces with 87.85% accuracy. Then, assuming that popularity correlates with aesthetics, we incorporated such neural networks into a genetic-programming system, called NEvMuse. NEvMuse autonomously "composed" novel variations of J.S. Bach's Invention #13 in A minor (BWV 784), variations which many listeners found to be aesthetically pleasing. Finally, we compared aesthetic judgments from an artificial music critic with emotional responses from 23 human subjects. Significant correlations were found. We provide evaluation results and samples of generated music. These results have implications for music information retrieval and computer-aided music composition. Managing a team of heterogeneous robots in a dynamic environment poses a challenging job. In this paper a model for a multi-purpose, real-time, adaptable, strategical coordination layer is presented. Based on previous work developed for the RoboCup Soccer simulation, small-size, middle-size and legged leagues, a generic coordination model was built. As both centralized and distributed environment are handled by the layer, communication was an important factor to consider only introducing a minor overhead. A multi-level hierarchical approach was followed with hybrid methods used to switch between concepts. The model was tested with two strategy instances, RoboCup Rescue Simulation and RoboCup Soccer. Strategies are designed with the help of a graphical tool. Results achieved by the team in RoboCup Rescue and Soccer Simulation competitions demonstrate the usefulness of this approach. We describe a new integration model that uses tools and services for supporting Web 2.0. This integration model defines a structure for a missing feature of Web 2.0. The model integrates a number of existing online tools having a common data model and aims to develop added-value community-building integrated environments. We discuss the overall design, architecture and the components of the integration model in the Web 2.0 domain.

In parallel with the growth of VoIP services, a large number of manufacturers have begun to develop multimode devices capable of connecting to multiple wireless access networks simultaneously. These multimode terminals have, in principle, the capability to support seamless handover between different radio access networks. One handover solution that utilises the IP diversity which these multimode devices can deliver is SIGMA. SIGMA is a promising end-to-end transport layer handover solution based on SCTP. The objective of this paper is to investigate if SIGMA is capable of providing seamless handover of VoIP calls without degradation in voice quality. To achieve this, we developed a Linux based testbed on which we implemented a VoIP client and server using SIGMA handoff. Each voice call uses the G.711 voice codec over RTP. PR-SCTP is used in place of the traditional UDP as the transport layer protocol. SIGMA based handover was used during full duplex voice calls between the client and server. The ITU-T E-Model has been used to calculate the voice quality during the handover. Results show that SIGMA can be used as a seamless handover mechanism for VoIP without any impact on voice quality.

The ultimate goal of the biomedical informatics project PrognoChip is the identification of classification and prognosis molecular markers for breast cancer. This requires not only an understanding of the genetic basis of the disease, based on the patient's tumor gene expression profiles but also the correlation of this data with knowledge normally processed in the clinical setting. In this paper, we present the Mediator component of the PrognoChip Integrated Clinico-Genomics Environment (ICGE), through which the integration of the clinical and genomic information subsystems is achieved. The biomedical investigator can form clinico-genomic queries through the web-based graphical user interface of the Mediator. This is split into several query forms, allowing cancerous sample selection (along with their associated gene expression profiles and patient characteristics), based on criteria of interest. After a query is formed, the Mediator translates it into an equivalent set of local subqueries, which are executed directly against the constituent databases. Then, results are combined for presentation to the user and/or transmission to the Data Mining tools for analysis.

In this paper a transport layer handover mechanism for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in 802.11b using the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is proposed. The multi-homing feature of SCTP is used to allow connections to several 802.11b Access Points (AP's). Probing packets that model VoIP encoded data at various transmission rates are used to obtain quality metrics from each of the available networks. Handover decisions are made based on the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) calculated from the ITU-T E-Model for voice quality assessment using the obtained measurements. The handover mechanism is shown to operate in 802.11b networks with heterogeneous transmission rates using multiple VoIP codecs. The results show a high correlation between the MOS predicted by the proposed mechanism and the MOS experienced by a VoIP call present in the network. Results verify the accurate operation of the scheme using multiple VoIP codecs at various transmission rates. A simulation showing an SCTP endpoint handover between heterogeneous transmission rate AP's is presented. © 2006 IEEE.

A central issue in computational neuroscience is to answer why neural systems can process information extremely fast. Here we investigate the effect of noise and the collaborative activity of a neural population on speeding up computation. We find that 1) when input noise is Poissonian, i.e., its variance is proportional to the mean, and 2) when the neural ensemble is initially at its stochastic equilibrium state, noise has the 'best' effect of accelerating computation, in the sense that the input strength is linearly encoded by the number of neurons firing in a short-time window, and that the neural system can use a simple strategy to read out the stimulus rapidly and accurately. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The Web Services framework, since it leverages the Service Oriented Architecture model, enables the development of applications that are loosely coupled and easier to manage. A Web Service is typically hosted within a Web Service Container. There are several choices for these containers depending on the platform and the language in which the applications would be developed. In this paper our focus is on applications built using the Java platform. Here, the most dominant Web Service container is the open-source Apache Axis Web Service container. In this paper we describe our experiences in deploying Web Services, specifically WS-ReliableMessaging, within this container. We enumerate the problems and limitations that we encountered within Axis, and our solutions to get around this problem. We also have a set of recommendations that would make this a more flexible container for sophisticated Web Service applications. © 2006 IEEE.
