This commentary is a response to Interacting with computers (Vol 14) - [Interacting Comput. 14 (2002) 119], [Interacting with Comput. 14 (2002) 141], [Interacting Comput. 14 (2002) 93]. Its aim is to discuss the role that neurophysiological measurements, such as EEG and MEG, may play in affective computing. The discussion is drawn upon the light of current experience and practice, as well as, advances envisaged in the fields of health informatics, telecommunications and biomedical engineering. It is explained why HCI research into interface evaluation and affective computing may be greatly enhanced by exploiting the underlying information of neurophysiological recordings. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Summary form only given. A hybrid scheduling is introduced that effectively combines broadcasting of more popular data (push data) and dissemination upon-request for less popular data (pull data), for asymmetric environments where the clients outnumber the servers having higher downlink communication (server to client) bandwidth than the uplink communication (client to server) bandwidth. We do not assume prior knowledge of the data access probability; in fact data access probabilities and thereby the cut-off-point to separate the push and the pull set are computed dynamically. In our scheme all the data items are assumed to be of variable length arranged in descending order of their access probabilities. The clients send their requests to the server, which queues them up for the pull items. At any instant of time, the item to be broadcast is designated applying a pure-push scheduling; whereas the item to be pulled is the one stored in the pull-queue, which has accumulated, so far, the highest number of pending requests with minimum service time requirement. The expected waiting time spent by a client in the hybrid schedule is evaluated analytically, and the cut-off point between push and pull items is chosen to minimize waiting time.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. We address the problem of complementing higher-order patterns without repetitions of existential variables. Differently from the first-order case, the complement of a pattern cannot, in general, be described by a pattern, or even by a finite set of patterns. We therefore generalize the simply-typed λ-calculus to include an internal notion of strict function so that we can directly express that a term must depend on a given variable. We show that, in this more expressive calculus, finite sets of patterns without repeated variables are closed under complement and intersection. Our principal application is the transformational approach to negation in higher-order logic programs.

Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) are based on a static infrastructure, and caching and replication in CDNs are performed in a static manner. We argue that it is necessary to design future CDNs in such a way that they are scalable to reach enough customers, their costs are kept low, and they provide a Quality-of-Service that satisfies the client requirements. To reach these goals, more flexibility is needed in CDNs. Flexibility will enable CDNs to perform faster and better decisions for caching and replication, and it will reduce the amount of manual intervention that is necessary to manage and maintain the CDN. In this paper, we discuss the application of Peer-to-Peer mechanisms in CDNs that support advanced caching and replication strategies and their combination with a dynamic QoS management hierarchy to reach the needed flexibility in CDNs. © 2003, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. This paper describes an experimental stereo vision based motion planning system for humanoid robots. The goal is to automatically generate arm trajectories that avoid obstacles in unknown environments from high-level task commands. Our system consists of three components: 1) environment sensing using stereo vision with disparity map generation and online consistency checking, 2) probabilistic mesh modeling in order to accumulate continuous vision input, and 3) motion planning for the robot arm using RRTs (Rapidly exploring Random Trees). We demonstrate results from experiments using an implementation designed for the humanoid robot H7.

The 1st and 2nd Regional Health Care System Authority of Central Macedonia (1st and 2nd PeSY) are two of the seventeen Regional Healthcare System Authorities in Greece. Every single PeSY aims to improve the level of quality that health care organisations offer as well as to control the expenditure of health care services provided by the health care organisations, Hospitals and Primary Care Health units. There is currently an urgent need for Regional Health Authorities to deploy integrated healthcare information system, based on secure networks. The limited interoperability of current hospital information systems (HIS) poses a risk for the management of patient related information since there is a difficulty to transform processed data into useful information and knowledge. Thus, a pilot system was developed to achieve data integration record synchronisation using the Health Level 7 protocol between the existing HIS of two Hospitals of Thessaloniki and the central Offices of the PeSY. The pilot was funded by the Third Community Support Framework (jointly funded by EU and Greece) funds in order to prepare the forthcoming major healthcare IT projects in Greece. It is shown that such a system is pragmatic, achieves data integration and provides acceptable integration costs.

This paper presents and analyses ten criteria that assess the quality of a set of three-finger grips suitable for dextrous manipulation on real 2D parts. The set of candidate hand configurations is the result of a previous process of grasp generation from the object image. The proposed criteria include six that depend on the actual finger configuration of the gripper. The kinematics of the Barrett hand has been used. The criteria are merged to give a global quality value that can be used to select the best grip to execute. Experimental results include tests on stability and the effect of parameter variation.
