Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications are currently an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. By definition, in a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, managers are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for migration into a SaaS environment. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the proposed methodology could aid managers prioritizes software application projects for SaaS migration.

Weighted graphs obtained from co-occurrence in user-item relations lead to non-metric topologies. We use this semi-metric behavior to issue recommendations, and discuss its relationship to transitive closure on fuzzy graphs. Finally, we test the performance of this method against other item- and user-based recommender systems on the Movie lens benchmark. We show that including highly semi-metric edges in our recommendation algorithms leads to better recommendations.

In response to our nation's cry for more engineers, this paper describes how a major university has leveraged four NSF program grants to produce a highly successful program focused on retention, graduation, and graduate degrees. One of the programs is for lower division students, one is for upper division transfer students, one is for non-transfer upper division students and graduate students that have come up through the system, and one is for upper division students who come from five selected non-metropolitan community colleges in Arizona. The last program ties everything all together with a Transfer Student Center, a place for the S-STEM Academic Scholarship Success Class to meet, a place to host potential transfer students, and a place for transfer students to study and network. An emphasis of all of these programs is the encouragement and support of female and underrepresented minority students and students with unmet financial need. These programs have attained a 90-95% retention rate. For upper division transfer students not in the program, the graduation rate is about 70% for males and 64% for females. The transfer GPA shock was shown to be negligent for new program transfer students, compared with a half grade point drop for new upper division transfer students not in the program. Most importantly, during the past three years over 50% of the graduated scholarship students have gone right on to graduate school full-time. Seventy percent of the transfer students who did not intend to go to graduate school when they matriculated to Arizona State University, but who have now chosen to go on to graduate school, have reported that this program was a major influence in this decision change. Several of the students are now in PhD programs preparing to become professors. The continuous shrinking of devices has introduced new challenges to integrated circuit design, mainly to deal with the parametric variations in process parameters. This paper presents an evaluation of the process variability on the current Ids of nanotechnologies devices, individually and simultaneously, taking into account the correlation among them. The results show that the deviation from mean value is quite significant ≈ 16% for high performance models. The variation of L has the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in high performance models while the dominant effect on the overall variation of the device in low power models still being due to Vth variations. Lastly, the effect of process parameter variations deteriorates with technology scaling, with a considerable increase in the deviation from the 22nm to 16nm technology.

The article introduces the notion of visual thinking in HCI and interaction design. It also serves as a call for contributors to a new regular interactions section, the Visual Thinking Backpage Gallery. Novice designers often erroneously think that elements of visual form are a matter of aesthetic preference. In fact, stylistic and layout and device elements of interactivity should, at best, scaffold meanings, or at least not distract from them. Meaningful content in the form of meaningful text and imagery contributes far more to the impact of interactivity design than decisions about decorative elements of form. The contemporary thinkers whose work enriches HCI by integrating design theory, ethnography, critical theory, feminism, philosophy, cultural studies, ethics, and associated domains include S. Bardzell and J. Bardzell, DiSalvo, Dourish, Forlizzi, Gaver, Nelson, Odom and Pierce, Sengers, Stolterman, Wakkary, and Zimmerman, to name far too few.

This paper presents a new code compression method where we use different dictionaries, all of them are based in traditional Huffman algorithm. Our method reduces code size by up to 34.5% (including all extra costs) and presents an improvement of almost 7% over the traditional Huffman method. We performed simulations using Simple Scalar and analyzes using the applications from benchmark MiBench and use the embedded processor ARM.

Segmentation of spinal vertebrae is extremely important in the study of spinal related disease or disorders. However, limited work has been done on precise segmentation of spinal vertebrae. The complexity of vertebrae shapes, with gaps in the cortical bone, internal boundaries, as well as the noisy, incomplete or missing information from the images have undoubtedly increased the challenge for image analysis. In this paper, we introduce a novel level set segmentation framework that integrates shape prior and the Willmore flow to drive the level set evolution. While the shape energy draws the level set function towards a range of possible prior shapes, the edge-mounted Willmore energy captures the localized geometry information and smooths the surface during the level set evolution. Experimental results on segmentation of spinal vertebrae from CT images demonstrate the powerful combination of prior knowledge and geometrical flow.

Background:Small insertions and deletions(INDELs) compose of the second largest category of genetic variants(next to single nucleotide polymorphism) in the human genome, which accounts for 18%of all the variants *** from the 1,000 Genome Project indicated an estimate of 1 million INDELs per human *** to SNPs(Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) and large structural variations,INDELs are of significant interest due to their potentials in affecting gene molecular functions and therefore cause *** of its functional importance,lacking a highly accurate bioinformatics tool for INDEL classifications has become a major obstacle in understanding the molecular functions. Methods:In this study,we develop a bioinformatics tool for INDEL *** constructed a training dataset that includes all the disease-causing and neutral INDELs documented in the Human Genome Mutation Database(HGMD) and 1,000 Genome *** the two sets of INDELs,we systematically investigated a series of features on their potentials in disrupting both protein structures and pre-mRNA *** then designed a predictor to best distinguish the disease-causing and neutral INDELs using machine-learning technique. Results:In this study,we focused on the disease relevance of the INDELs in the exonic regions,which include 25,923 and 4,643 disease-causing and neutral INDELs,*** found that the disease-causing INDELs more likely occur in predicted structured regions and neutral INDELs are more likely in unstructured,intrinsically disordered *** also found that INDEL sites matched more to homologous sequences are more like *** RNA processing, we found disease-causing INDELs are twice likely to disrupt binding sites of RNA-binding proteins. We also found that disease-causing INDELs tend to be longer,and be closer to the splice *** addition,the genomic loci for disease-causing INDELs are more evolutionarily conserved,and tend to locat

The purpose of this investigation was to develop the STEM Active Listening Skills Assessment (STEM-ALSA), a conceptually grounded instrument designed to measure four components of active listening, a key element of communication in an academic setting. The STEM-ALSA is comprised of three unique scales that measure a person's knowledge (12 items), ability to apply (25 items), and self-efficacy (5 items) with respect to active listening. Two pilot studies were conducted with N = 99 upper level undergraduate students enrolled in STEM disciplines to develop and evaluate the instrument. Results of an exploratory factor analysis identified both a unidimensional factor structure for each of the three scales and total scores with adequate internal consistency reliability estimates. The STEM-ALSA provides a mechanism for measuring active listening skills among students in STEM.
