This work proposes an accuracy-driven evaluation model of an approximate adder (AxA) called an approximate parallel prefix adder (AxPPA). It explores the significance of approximate computing (AxC) in optimizing performance and energy efficiency in computer systems by accepting minor accuracy trade-offs. We examine the AxPPA through a meticulous error analysis model and an automated analysis framework that comprehensively evaluates area and delay based on the fundamental equations of parallel prefix adders (PPAs). Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of lower-part approximation in adders, effectively addressing the elongation of carry chains and enhancing overall efficiency. The choice of approximation method directly impacts computational accuracy, resulting in variations in the number of approximated bits and carry chain length for a given tolerance level. Conducting a thorough comparison of accuracy trade-offs requires a unique design and simulation for each unit and approximation level, which can be time-consuming, particularly in larger circuits. Therefore, the proposed approach facilitates the exploration of larger circuit design space encompassing multiple AxAs, significantly minimizing time investment. In our experiments, the accuracy-driven evaluation of the lower part approximation method in AxA took 71.268 milliseconds for 1 million random inputs, with a K -bits approximation ranging from 1 to 16. The results indicate that AxPPA exhibits a minor error magnitude among the explored literature AxAs, being approximately 50.97% more accurate on average.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education. © 2023 IEEE.

Three-dimensional (3D) representation of cultural heritage in a digital environment is coming into prominence for documentation of geometric and semantic details and the interpretation of shape representation from academic studies to commercial practices. To interpret cultural and historical shapes, the use of the computational medium is expanding with developing technologies. Advanced 3D design and development applications appear every day with distinct functions. However, not every technology provides designers a convenient medium to create, explore, and think naturally. In that sense, digital design mediums and tools become important to enhance the interactivity level with cultural heritage for designers through different interfaces. Particularly, the utilities of design interfaces are essential for preserving reconstructing ruined cultural heritage in the digital design mediums. In this study, we investigate the designers’ creative design process in the context of shape representation methods within the possibilities of two different 3D design interfaces as a computer and virtual reality (VR) interfaces. At first, we conducted a shape exploration exercise to generate the 3D model pieces of the Dark Church in Cappadocia. And then, we used the generated 3D model pieces in a shape representation exercise to observe the seeing, imagining, and acting abilities of designers in computer and VR environments. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work studied message communications on patient portals and examined both the longitudinal trends and the correlations with characteristics of message senders. We analyzed over 5.6 million secure messages sent on the Mayo Clinic patient portal between February 18, 2010, and December 31, 2017. We studied the longitudinal changes in the number of portal messages, patient senders' demographics and medical conditions (PheCodes), and provider senders' care settings (e.g., primary or specialty) and practice roles (e.g., physician, nurse practitioner, and registered nurses). When compared to non-message-senders, patient message senders had a significantly higher proportion of the demographics: age 41-60, female, married, white, and English-speaking. From 2010-2017, an individual patient sent an average of 9.8 messages per person while a provider sent 418.4. The average number of PheCodes for all patients regardless of portal usage increased from 7.5 +/-6.9 in 2010 to 10.7 +/- 10.1 in 2017. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are a cornerstone of modern healthcare analytics, offering rich datasets for various disease analyses through advanced deep learning algorithms. However, the pervasive issue of missing values in EHRs significantly hampers the development and performance of these models. Addressing this challenge is crucial for enhancing clinical decision-making and patient care. Existing methods for handling missing data, ranging from simple imputation to more sophisticated approaches, often fall short of capturing the temporal dynamics inherent in EHRs. To bridge this gap, we introduce the Deep Stochastic Time-series Imputation (Deep STI) algorithm, an innovative end-to-end deep learning model that seamlessly integrates a sequence-to-sequence generative network with a prediction network. Deep STI is designed to leverage the observed time-series data in EHRs, learning to infer missing values from the temporal context with high accuracy. We evaluated Deep STI on the liver cancer data from the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), Taiwan. Our results showed that Deep STI achieved better 5-year hepatocellular carcinoma predictions (19.21% in the area under the precision-recall curve) than extreme gradient boosting (18.15%) and Transformer (18.09%). The ablation study also illustrates the efficacy of our generative architecture design compared to regular imputations. This approach not only promises to improve the reliability of disease analysis in the presence of incomplete data but also sets a new standard for utilizing EHRs in predictive healthcare. Our work aims to advance the field of healthcare analytics and open new avenues for research in deep learning applications to EHRs. © 2024 IEEE.

Common critiques of natural language processing (NLP) methods cite their lack of multimodal sensory information, claiming an inability to learn situated, action-oriented relations through language alone. Barsalou's (1983) theory of ad hoc categories, which are formed from to achieve goals in real-world scenarios, correspond theoretically to those types of relations with which language models ought to have great difficulty. Recent NLP models have developed dynamic approaches to word representations, where the same word can have different encodings depending on the context in which it appears. Testing these models using categorization tasks with human response data demonstrates that situated properties may be partially captured through semantic analysis. We discuss possible ways in which different notions of situatedness may be distinguished for future development and testing of NLP models. © 2022 The Author(s). The tourism industry is very important to prioritize, especially for developing countries like Thailand. The increase in tourist visits to Bangkok also triggers the potential for a rise in Bangkok tourism during the pandemic. In this study, shopping malls are one of the attractive attractions for a capital city like Bangkok. Tourist expectations of attraction must be realized so that satisfaction can be realized and created revisit. In the digitalization era, the internet's use to find and disseminate information has become commonplace. *** is one of the leading review sites, which already has many reviewers, and is the case study in this research. Using Word Cloud as an analysis technique and clustering of data reviews, several important factors influence tourist satisfaction. Based on the 1186 clustered reviewers, several factors were produced, such as Place Quality, Location Access, Support Facilities, Price, and Seller Attitude. These factors can influence the decision to visit shopping malls in Bangkok because they represent tourist satisfaction. © 2023 IEEE.

Garden of Eden (GOE) states in cellular automata are grid configurations which have no precursors, that is, they can only occur as initial conditions. Finding individual configurations that minimize or maximize some criterion of interest (e.g., grid size, density, etc.) has been a popular sport in recreational mathematics, but systematic studies of the set of GOEs for a cellular automaton have been rare. This paper presents the current results of an ongoing computational study of GOE configurations in Conway’s Game of Life (GoL) cellular automaton. Specifically, we describe the current status of a map of the layout of GOEs and nonGOEs in density/size space, characterize how the density-dependent structure of the number of precursors varies with increasing grid size as we approach the point where GOEs begin to occur, provide a catalog of all known GOE configurations up to a grid size of 11 × 11, and initiate a study of the structure of the network of constraints that characterize GOE vs. nonGOE configurations. © 2022, CC BY.

Industrial IoT systems are constantly increasing security to mitigate failures and unallowed access. Nowadays, enterprise systems can handle large amounts of sensitive information that can be received from hundreds of tiny devices such as sensors, fog devices, gateways, etc. However, the lower processing capacity associated with tiny devices due to manufacturing decisions has contributed to their lack of defensive measures and hardware security support. Those devices performance usually restricts advanced software security usage and results in several vulnerabilities in the device’s authentication. RFID tags have been used in the IoT industry to create a variety of applications for identification, authentication, or even virtual proof of reality, but RFID tags are still susceptible to serious attacks since fake RFID devices or other attacks are trying to find ways of bypassing the security. In this paper, 5 (five) machine learning algorithms have been used to classify a dataset of read-time operations from blocks in Mifare RFID and fake tags, aiming to identify different behaviors between dataset’s variables, which can be used for a Physical Unclonable Functions (PUF). According to our results, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) offered the best performance for the considered problem. The KNN obtained a root mean squared error equal to 0.058 and an mean absolute error equal to 0.003. The obtained results indicate that operation times have variables inherent to the manufacturing process and this can be useful for future identity management schemes.
