—The reliable and resilient operation of the smart grid necessitates a clear understanding of the intra-and-inter dependencies of its power and communication systems. This understanding can only be achieved by accurately depicting the interactions between the different components of these two systems. This paper presents a model, called modified implicative interdependency model (MIIM), for capturing these interactions. Data obtained from a power utility in the U.S. Southwest is used to ensure the validity of the model. The performance of the model for a specific power system application namely, state estimation, is demonstrated using the IEEE 118-bus system. The results indicate that the proposed model is more accurate than its predecessor, the implicative interdependency model (IIM) [1], in predicting the system state in case of failures in the power and/or communication systems. Thyroid disorders are a complex group of diseases that require an accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. Fine-needle aspiration biopsies can assist in detecting many thyroid diseases. These materials can be analyzed visually using traditional computer vision methods, despite the limitations of complex samples. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach that uses hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to analyze thyroid biological samples. HSI measures the absorbance of infrared light by biological samples using a micro Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) and converts this data into hyperspectral images. In this study, we used HSI to train and validate a recurrent neural network to classify thyroid samples as healthy, cancerous, or goiter. Our experiments, based on the k-fold cross-validation, achieved an overall accuracy of 96.88%, a sensitivity of 96.87%, and a specificity of 98.45%. These results demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral imaging as a tool to assist pathologists in the diagnosis of thyroid disease.

Decentralized attribution of generative models

Growing applications of generative models have led to new threats such as malicious personation and digital copyright infringement. One solution to these threats is model attribution, i.e., the identification of user-end models where the contents under question are generated from. Existing studies showed empirical feasibility of attribution through a centralized classifier trained on all user-end models. However, this approach is not scalable in reality as the number of models ever grows. Neither does it provide an attributability guarantee. To this end, this paper studies decentralized attribution, which relies on binary classifiers associated with each user-end model. Each binary classifier is parameterized by a user-specific key and distinguishes its associated model distribution from the authentic data distribution. We develop sufficient conditions of the keys that guarantee an attributability lower bound. Our method is validated on MNIST, CelebA, and FFHQ datasets. We also examine the trade-off between generation quality and robustness of attribution against adversarial post-processes. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Securing and protecting Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems have been an active topic of research for the past decades due to the catastrophic and disastrous consequences when these systems are breached or compromised. Therefore, possible cyberattacks and malicious behaviours must be addressed instantly to prevent catastrophic and disastrous consequences on the national critical infrastructures. To this end, intrusion detection systems are considered as an essential security defence mechanism for SCADA networks. It can effectively detect potential cyberattacks and malicious activities and prevent catastrophic consequences. However, zero-day, deception and stealth attacks require a special type of detection methods in which it should be able to identify anomalies and detect possible malicious activities. There are a handful number of studies that have been carried out previously in this regard. However, this area of research is still immature and emerging. Therefore, this research is intended to investigate the merits, limitations and drawbacks of the existing detection methods, investigates the cyberattacks on SCADA systems, identify key features that can be used to discover irregular activities and to put forward the requirements and recommendations for detect cyberattacks and malicious activities in the SCADA networks.

With ahead-of-time aircraft management, we are able to reduce aircraft collision and improve air traffic capacity. However, there are various impact factors which will cause a large deviation between the actual flight and the original flight plan. Such uncertainty will result in an inappropriate decision for flight management. In order to solve this problem, most of the existing research attempt to build up a stochastic trajectory prediction model to capture the influence of the weather. However, the complexity of the weather information and various human factors make it hard to build up an accurate trajectory prediction framework. Our approach considers the problem of trajectory deviation as the "anomaly" and builds up an analytics pipeline for anomaly detection, anomaly diagnostics, and anomaly prediction. For anomaly detection, we propose to apply the CUSUM chart to detect the abnormal trajectory point which differs from the flight plan. For anomaly diagnostics, we would like to link the entire anomalous trajectory sequences with the convective weather data and extract important features based on time-series feature engineering. Furthermore, XGBoost was applied to detect the anomalous trajectory sequences based on the time-series features. For anomaly prediction, we will build up a point-wise prediction framework based on the Hidden Markov Model and Convectional LSTM to predict the probability that the pilot would deviate from the flight plan. Finally, we demonstrate the significance of the proposed method using real flight data from JFK to LAX. © 2019 Prognostics and Health Management Society. All rights reserved.

Many web applications are developed to handle important and critical tasks, which may attract a large number of attackers. With various types of attacks, there is no finite solution to mitigate it's all. Deception technique is one of the area that can be explore to defend against web attack. Deception can detect, analyzed and defend against advanced web attack that cannot be done using existing anomaly-based detection and prevention techniques. Current deceptive solutions tend to be doubtful to application-layer protocols and lack of study on how deception can be applied at this level. Thus, those solutions can't properly be used to protect against application-layer attacks that are integrally based on elements from the application-layer itself. This research aims to study possible usages of deception techniques that could be incorporated in the context of application-layer traffic of web applications with the purpose of detecting web application attacks. The comparative results from this study will be used to identify which deception techniques are suitable to provide a useful layer of protection for a web application.

Smart Meter Data (SMD) has been considered by many as sensitive due to many reasons. One of these reasons is the security issue possessed by the SMD. With the raising popularity of the smart meter deployment around the world have raised new issues regarding the security of the SMD. Attacker with malicious intention and equip with certain capability can directly inject a false reading to the actual consumption of the SMD. Because of this reason, the protection and privacy of SMD have become a consideration in many researches. In order to protect and secure SMD, it is very important to understand the pattern of the SMD behavior. The studied from SMD can expose the past event that happened to the actual data as any direct manipulation to the SMD. In order to track any changes to the SMD, this paper has proposed a Dynamical Behavior Measurement Algorithm (DBMA), which involves a number of mathematical operations in order to understand and highlight in graphs the behavior of SMD and the mechanism of numbers' changing. The obtained results from DBMA would be useful to track the SMD if there is any form of malicious data being injected to the actual SMD thus can help in enhancing the SMD security. An experimental work has been conducted where 43200 samples have been tested and analysed using the proposed DBMA. The analysis evaluation of this work has been presented in this paper.

Finding a quantum battery model that demonstrates a quantum advantage while remaining feasible for experimental production is a considerable challenge. In this paper, we introduce a superconducting quantum battery (SQB) model that exhibits such an advantage. The model consists of two coupled superconducting qubits that interact during the unitary charging process while remaining in equilibrium with a thermal reservoir. We first describe the model, provide evidence of the quantum advantage, and then discuss the fabrication process of the battery using superconducting qubits. Importantly, we derive analytical expressions for the ergotropy, instantaneous power, and capacity of the SQB, as well as their connection to quantum coherence. We demonstrate that leveraging the collective effects of Josephson energies and the coupling energy between qubits allows for optimization, resulting in improved energy redistribution and a significant enhancement in charging efficiency. This work highlights the complexities of tuning system parameters, which increase the potential for work extraction from the quantum battery, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the charging mechanisms involved. These findings can be applied to superconducting quantum circuit battery architectures, underscoring the feasibility of efficient energy storage in these systems. Our results pave the way for proposals of new superconducting devices capable of storing extractable work, emphasizing their potential for efficient energy storage. © 2024, CC BY.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a noninvasively technique used to detect vital signs such as heart rate (HR), saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2) and blood pressure (BP). Recently, wearable finger-type PPG devices are increasingly developed toward convenience of person under monitoring (PUM). Two most critical features of wearable PPG devices are high accuracy and long operation time. To enhance these functions, this paper proposes a new architecture to select, process and transfer only high quality PPG signals. Hence, data quality is significantly improved and power consumption on wireless module is minimized. In the proposed architecture, parameters of PPG sensor are reconfigured in real-time being suitable with skin characteristics of PUM. Moreover, the adaptive LED current control algorithm is proposed to dynamically change the LED current to remove various motion artifacts (MA) and get high amplitude PPG signal. We also develop a heart rate (HR) estimation framework utilizing deep learning (DL) model based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The combination of CNN-LSTM can extract features from both spatial and temporal correlation. A light-weight model with two CNN-LSTM layers is built to estimate HR with in only 5s. For validation, we conduct experiments with volunteers doing various physical exercises. The results show PPG signals with high amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). HR estimation is more accurate even during irregular and muscle strength exercises. The proposed adaptive architecture and DL-based HR estimation can overcome MA and minimize the power consumption on wireless transfer module of wearable PPG devices. © 2022 The Author(s)

Requirements elicitation and analysis is one of the topics covered in Software Engineering, Requirements Engineering (RE) and other subjects belonging to the group, which are usually taught to the undergraduate computer science students. Requirements elicitation and analysis are crucial to the software development as mistakes made at this stage will negatively impact the subsequent stages of development. Thus, it is important to ensure students' firm understanding of the topic. One way to improve their understanding is by improving their interest and engagement in the topic. Taking advantage of younger generation's inclination towards games, means to increase students' interest and understanding of the topic using serious games were proposed. However, most of the existing games thus far are not focusing on the requirements elicitation and analysis in detail and are limited to only one real-life scenario per game. This research therefore attempted to address the gap by designing and developing a digital serious game for requirements elicitation and analysis topic that aims to improve students' understanding of the topic by applying the knowledge gained from lectures to a number of real-life scenarios provided in the game. The content of the game was designed based on the learning objectives to be attained and its overall design and development followed the ADDIE model comprising analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation phases. This paper however focuses on the design and development phases of the game. A pilot test was performed at the end of the development phase where the game's usability and its ability to attain the learning objectives of the topic were assessed. However, the test only covered the first level of the game. Analysis performed on the test results showed that while most of the assessed learning objectives were satisfactorily attained, rooms for improvement with regards to game usability were seen, particularly on the difficulty an
